Late to the discussion, but there are quite a few examples around the Clyde of termini at right angles to water, some with tracks stopping close to the edge:

- Renfrew Wharf

- Craigendoran Pier

- Greenock Princes Pier

- Fairlie Pier

- Ardrossan Winton Pier

- Ardrossan Montgomerie Pier

- Original Ayr station, before line was extended to Girvan

- Original Girvan station, before line was extended to Stranraer

- Stranraer Harbour station

Just to illustrate what I will be doing here are a couple of CAD ideas for the layout extension. All are rough renders

The platform and buffers are in the edge of one board. The River board has a small extnesion of land (probably an in filledf brick built wall about 3 meters (1:1) from the end of the track. the wall will likely extend up a bit as well.

The river will be having a weir, or somesuch under the bridge as it will be a new set of banks constructed when the bridge was re-built.

Thanks all for the help and pointers.

Johann Marsbar beat me to it! Great Yarmouth Vauxhall station finishes where the river Bure meets the river Yare. Just to the side of the station crossing the river Bure is the bridge that carried freight trains to Great Yarmouth docks further along the river. All nicely visible on Google earth :) half of the old river bridge has received some TLC and is in use as a foot path from the station.

How about Winteringham Haven station on the North Lindsey Light Railway (ex GCR/LNER)? It was intended as a through-station but remained a terminus. However, a short extension curved off away to sidings on the banks of the Humber before continuing along the riverbank to eventually terminate at Whitton. The line in Winteringham doesn't cross a major river so much as a large drain, but it kind of does what you're seeking- and in my view it's an eminently modellable slice of a impressively bleak North Lincs. Sadly the NLS only has the 6-inch map available, but it gives the general idea. If you're interested I can get you the relevant 25-inch OS map when I'm back at work on Monday.

Hampton Court? The Thames is just beyond the platforms and the platforms cross the River Ember

And as-built the station was on an island with a drawbridge! Only changed with the construction of the new bridge and diversion of the Mole into the Embers channel.

Tilbury Riverside station on the River Thames is another example, but possibly too grand for the purpose.
