7mm Class 37's & Other Heljan 7mm Models

Recommended Posts

Several months ago I was asked to modify and repaint a Heljan class 37 model.

Here are quite a few pictures of the model as I was working on it and after it had been finished.

Pete - superb! Are any of the parts future PH Designs? I presume the roof fan and grill are Shawplan? Whose are the buffers and headlight? Any photos with the headlight LED lit?

The weathering is nice and subtle too - a great job.

The head light is PRMRP, yes the Fan and grills are Shawplan, the buffer beam is my design as are the steps and horn grills, the buffers are JLTRT.

The standard lights are not fitted and the head light led are only fitted temporally in place the customer will be fitting a sound decoder and wiring the lighting and fan to the independent functions on the decoder.

I have no plans at present to produce any of these items under the PH Designs banner but I may produce them to order only.

The picture of the real loco that were posted a few weeks ago were a great help for the detailing, the painting and the weathering.

I was incorrect saying the head light was from MMP earlier I have edited the reply accordingly.

Having seen this in the flesh earlier this evening, I must say that photos can't even do it justice. It looks the part, has the weight and presence of the real deal, and Pete has integrated the key mods that transform the RTR model, plus some of his own, into making what is truly a thing of beauty.

Okay, so it was viewed in a shrine to boilered ScR 37s, but trust me on this - 37025 PHD-style is as good as it gets where 7mm tractors are concerned.

Great work mate, and thanks for sharing a Type 3 to be proud of. Now how about a filthy Canton - Haymarket centre headcode transferee circa 1966 wink.gif

Very nice work Pete.

Takes me back to one Saturday afternoon when '025 was allocated to BS and was actually on her own holding sidings. Sadly EWS had painted out the large logo by then but the loco was soooooo much fun, as I'm sure Mikeh will confirm if he sees this.

I've been searching through flickr at Fotopic to try and find a piccie of 37025 minus the large logo and was surprised that 15 pages of Flickr revealed not one single image !!!

Here is a very modellable 1998 scene though ;

Thanks Tony if you are an RMwebber.

I have modified another Heljan Class 37 this time into a current working 37.

This starts off with the usual mods to the Heljan 37 to bring it up to date this one has several subtle differences on each end and on the body side.

It did not take as long to do as 37025 as I knew what to change and the best way to do it.

The model turned out well I think?

Hi Pete,

Both those 37's look superb! I really like the work you have done on 025 - those buffers in particular are very nice and your footsteps look really good in the bigger scale. (when I finally get around to adding more detail to my Rannoch fleet will need to get some of your 4mm ones!). 37087 is a favourite of mine and not yet added to my DRS fleet but your model is very inspirational and also the detail photos are very useful as well to compare to. The paint finish as well on both models looks very smooth! Thanks for sharing them on here,

Mark

Truly great work Pete, the steps and roof fans are simply stunning........almost churlish to fault anything but why have you not plated the second lower bodyside step on both locos? Clearly visible on your shot of DRS loco just below and to the right of the big DRS logo as plated. Is an often overlooked mod on remodelled 37s.

Well I have heard that Heljan may be producing one some time in the future?

But I have had nothing confirmed so fingers crossed.

Pete

I spoke to the Heljan guys at Telford Guildex last week. They said they will do another variant of the 37 (I didn't push them on which variant, but I did mention centre-headcode box)...

But...

They have the new 26s, 33s and Deltics to concentrate on producing for now...

Tower Models reckon the next loco after that will be a Class 31...

They said they are going to wait until there's re-newed demand for the 37. Seems Heljan themselves have no more 37s in stock; they are all either with modellers, or on dealer's shelves.

I'm not sure how they find out or quantify 're-newed demand', though?? Pretty much the only reason I haven't bit the bullet and melted my plastic to buy their 37 so far is because I want another version (i.e. Centre Headcode). I wonder how many others are in the same position..? Our demand is still there...
