Nice one Gilbert. Thank you Alan. Kevin mentioned recently on the wonderful Little Muddle thread that he finds that sometimes an image really comes off, without being able to say why it has so much more impact than others. The same applies here, as regards the second one anyway. I don't know why I felt that b&w would improve it, but it did, and a good deal too. Technically, it isn't bad, quite sharp and acceptable depth of field, but why does this one really hit the spot? Dunno.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 4, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 4, 2019 Another competition today, and rather than thinking how I can manage to throw it away again, I am telling myself that if I can get that close to winning without playing well, what will happen when I do? Time will tell. Time for that proper Castle to back down onto its train, and get ready to head off to the East. and as we all like B17s very much, don't we?, we'll have another view as well. This is another one that came off better than I thought it would, but again I can't put my finger on a reason for it.
westerner
Could it be that both of the ones you like have track in the foreground leading the eye to different parts of the image?

Do you think it is an improvement? It certainly saves a lot of fiddling about. Next we see the A3 at rest, having correctly pulled far enough forward to avoid smoke under the roof. Gilbert, if you can find a photograph of a suitable (not necessarily correct) series of railway tracks going into the distance between stock sidings and slide that behind the bridge for photography purposes, from certain angles it may be quite effective. You'd need at least two background boards, I'm thinking, one taken from near eye level and one from a more raised position depending on where you place your camera. Alternatively, try a mirror there. Somethings they have a remarkable effect at creating distance. 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 4, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 4, 2019 Golf, huh. I underestimated how cold it was going to be, didn't put on enough warm clothing, got frozen, very miserable and lost interest. Then I started photoshopping stuff I took yesterday. Of six images, two were out of focus, another was nice, but the loco's leading bogie was off the road, and a fourth wasn't up to much. Here it is, as I have precious little else to offer, and am not a happy bunny. 20
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 5, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 5, 2019 Osteopath and garden centre today, in that order, which gives me the opportunity to put my back out again straight away by lifting heavy bags of compost and other stuff. What do you mean "why don't you do it the other way round?". Two more pictures left in store - that V2 again, waiting to set off with the 7.25 to KX. and yet another view of the DE area, featuring the old GN carriage.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 5, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 5, 2019 A lovely evening with a friend. Nothing to do with railways though. Back to golf tomorrow, but with a more supple back and feeling less stressed, so once again we shall see. The 7.35 to Doncaster was a bit delayed while someone rerailed the bogie wheels, but is now ready to depart. while another WD plods through on its way to Ferme Park.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 6, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 6, 2019 Simple pictures this morning. WD under the roof. and again, but a bit closer. Little else to report really. Redoing the sequence is going to be an even bigger job than I thought, as I have to do all the loco diagrams again too. This is because someone keeps making me buy more of them. 28

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 6, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 6, 2019 I'm running out of pictures again, but I intend to spend most of tomorrow on railway stuff, so that should be remedied. For now though, we just have a 4F to look at, as it slows for the stop with its Leicester bound train. 22
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 7, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 7, 2019 Right! No time to hang around on here! Must get on!!! Gets less credible by the second, doesn't it? I've only one image left, so it will be a short visit anyway. We just have the other side of the 4F.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 7, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 7, 2019 You may wish to sit down before reading on. Today, all objectives were achieved, and even exceeded. Tomorrow, I am having a new boiler fitted, though I shan't be getting a double chimney. The fitter is arriving very early though, so I'd better go and get some sleep. Before that though, pictures of an A3, Persimmon this time, rolling in with the 7.30 Grantham -KX. Then a slightly different, and probably much safer angle.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 8, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 8, 2019 Routine disrupted, and predictably I don't like it. No heating for three days! Never mind, I shall try to continue yesterday's spectacular progress, though that means hours on the PC rather than in the railway room. We have a 9F bringing more empties to New England, and we get a broadside view as it approaches Crescent Bridge. 92183 was delivered to New England in December 1957, so is just a few months old. No wonder we thought steam would be with us for another forty years or more. Swinging under the bridge, the 9F meets the A3, which is picking up passengers for Huntingdon St Neots Biggleswade and Kings Cross.
RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted April 8, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 8, 2019 The more modern steam locomotives could easily have been available through to the late 70s despite clean air laws and the like. I will go no further with that little can as I want to remain calm and happy today. Good luck with yer boiler. P
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 8, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 8, 2019 Getting a little chilly in here, but apparently the job is progressing well. Colder tomorrow though. Our man on Platform 3 also got a shot of 92183 as it passed the stock of the Grantham express. Both trains then departed, but on the Up yet another load of coal headed South, but this time with an 02 in charge.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 9, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 9, 2019 Back to the fifties in real life this morning. No heating, and it is more than a trifle chilly. What softies we are! Most of us anyway. Does anyone miss the days when we scraped ice off the inside of our bedroom windows in the morning though? Anyway, the fitter has just arrived, and says I may have heating back on today if all goes well. Pictures? Well, 02s look very nice from any angle, so here is a going away shot. The next available slot on the Up was used by a J50 on its way down to South yard for a day's shunting. 33

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 9, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 9, 2019 A very pleasant surprise when I got home from golf. Job all done, heating back on, all very clean and tidy. What's more, I'd mentioned a couple of other little things that were niggling me, and he'd done those too, though they were nothing to do with the job he came for. I wish there were more like him. Time for more pictures, which feature the 5.50 very slow train from KX, which is on its way to Grantham, but will have a ten minute rest here. Doncaster's A3 Ladas seems to have been a regular on this turn, and here it is again. A look through the arch shows the A3's front end, which certainly gives a feeling of power, though not necessarily of grace.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 10, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 10, 2019 Nice and warm in here today, but not outside. I shall enjoy a quiet day, with a bit of railway time, possibly. What's happening at PN? There is still time to get some more goods traffic through, so we get another 9F, 92188 this time, with more empties running Class F. Idleness whispered that I could get away with not photoshopping this. Not the next one though.
