RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 13, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 13, 2019 Today I have disrupted routines, as Tuesday has had to become Monday. Expect aberrant behaviour and memory loss. So, before I go shopping on the wrong day, a look over a fence at Duke of Rothesay on the way to Kings Cross.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 13, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 13, 2019 Shopping done. No traffic Then started on car insurance renewal, as my quote had gone up by ten per cent. On a well known comparison web site, lowest quote was £60 less, from...... my current insurer! Twenty minutes of plinky plonk music later, I get through to a human being. Short discussion follows, and I get the usual "our online quote is for new customers". I make remarks about loyalty, and going elsewhere, and within a few minutes I have a lower quote still. I now remain with the same insurer, but pay £85 less than the original quote, and £55 less than I paid for the current year. The moral of this tale is that it is worth hanging on the phone for 25 minutes. Now, what railway stuff can I get for £85? it is not a good idea to take photos against strong light, even with a lens hood, and an even worse idea when the subject is itself very dark. So, why did I take yet another? 21

This could be another excuse for doing very little today. We shall see. I had assumed that Platform 5 would never be used for passenger trains, because it was so short, but looking at a photo recently I saw that there was still a sign pointing to it, so I presume it must have had occasional use. For that reason, the 1205 diesel to Skegness, which has been throbbing away further down the platform, has just pulled forward to take on passengers, rather than backing and filling to get into Platform 4, No sitting at the front this time, even though the driver hasn't put the blinds down. Not for lower class oiks, anyway. The DMU will be preceded by fish empties for New Clee, which appear from the south. This is the first of a series of pictures taken with the lens hood on the camera, so there will be a succession of higher level views. Hi Gilbert The B1 Photo truly gives a superb panoramic angle across your layout. Regards David Edited May 13, 2019 by landscapes 1

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 13, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 13, 2019 Time for the pick up goods to Hitchin, for some reason a much photographed train back in the 50s. It nearly always had a WD, whose crew would be stopping every where over the course of the next eight hours. Here it is at the start of its journey.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 14, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 14, 2019 Off to a meeting at Hinckley, hence the early start. Hinckley is quite near Leicester, which is where this ancient Midland engine is heading. Having stopped for the regulation four minutes, it goes on its way, and passes another of Gateshead's filthiest, which is waiting to take over the 1100 Glasgow.
RMweb Premium 45156 Posted May 14, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 14, 2019 Gilbert - the photos on this thread are quite amazing - even allowing for Photoshop, and they reflect not only the quality of your modelling, but also what can be achieved by modern technology. There's only a couple of layouts here which I follow regularly, yours and Waverley West - different eras, but both ECML, and both show what can be achieved with modern resources and a lot of effort. 5
RMweb Premium great northern Posted May 14, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 14, 2019 A frustrating day. My meeting turned out to be a cleverly concealed sales pitch, so we walked out, a complete waste of two and a half hours. Golf this afternoon was back to 450 yards to hit two shots, and four more to get the ****** ball another twenty yards and into the hole. PN is far less frustrating, even when things fall off, which did not happen as the 1000 Up Leeds ran through. This was the return working of the KX A4 which took the previous evenings Yorkshire Pullman, but this one is not up to usual Top Shed standards, as it hasn't had the Tim treatment yet.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 15, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 15, 2019 One A4 is soon followed by another, as Walter.K. Whigham appears with the 1100 Glasgow. This is another one on the Timming list.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 15, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 15, 2019 There's a train to Cambridge due to leave shortly, which means a GE engine is likely to be seen. The pilot brought the stock in, and the loco is backing on. We do indeed have one of Cambridge shed's sadly diminishing number of B12s, so let's enjoy it while we can. We enjoy A3s too, but mot so much when they have been allowed to get into this sad external condition. Gladiateur sets off for home with the Glasgow.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 16, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 16, 2019 The B12 starts off towards home with the 1237 Cambridge. Then it is time for one of three Pullmans in quick succession. Well turned out KX top link A1 Great Eastern brings the Up Tees-Tyne towards the station. Believe it or not, I had three or four goes at getting that lamp straight.

The problem is that I then have to make them, and fit them, which is even more difficult these days. I may have a go though.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 17, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 17, 2019 No update last night, as I was in a foul mood. I shall not bore you with the reason(s). I couldn't be a***d with photoshopping stuff either, so what we are left with is this. The next one is the 1247 arrival from Doncaster via the GN/GE, which has a most appropriate engine, though that never occured to me at the time. I did shop this, but as you can see, did not notice all the mess in the sky. Normally, I wouldn't be able to put up with this, but yesterday I wasn't prepared to go back and put it right. Put it down to cheap 1950s camera or film. 22 1

Exactly what I thought I've been browsing for a while now looking at this amazing layout. Spent a lot of time going through the thread, not every page as I would still be back in 2015... The quality of this layout, everything about it, is just fantastic. Gilbert, my congratulations to you and all the other talented folks who have worked on this. And your photos are absolutely brilliant, there were times when I was looking through the thread when I did a double take to see if it really was the model!! And I really mean that. Going through the thread like I have done I can see how you've improved as a photographer, not that you were that bad to start with, and I can only sincerely say how impressed I am. I'm very much an armchair modeller at the moment so enjoy looking at other people's achievments and understanding how they got there. Great stuff and keep the photos coming but also most importantly make sure you keep enjoying the layout and spending time doing what you want to do on it.
