RMweb Premium great northern Posted June 13, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 13, 2019 Something different. I have at least one family of woodpeckers visiting my feeders at present, and one family has had two fledglings perched on the fence while Mum or Dad gets provisions from my peanut feeder. Sometimes the adult also shoots off into a tree, so there may be more young still in the nest. Anyway, a bit earlier, one of those on the fence got tired of waiting to be fed, so decided to help itself. Quite a distance away, low light and hand held, so this was the best I could do, but I thought it was worth sharing.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted June 13, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 13, 2019 For a short while today the clouds lifted, so I shot off upstairs and took some more photos. Here's one from towards the end of the last session though, featuring a graceful 02 and yet more coal empties.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted June 14, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 14, 2019 Heavy rain yet again. Woodpecker is now attacking a suet feeder, the contents of which won't last long at this rate. On the ground below is a blackbird snaffling all the bits which are falling to the ground. Economy of avian effort. Update - three adult woodpeckers now. PN in 1958, with not a woodpecker in sight, but another view of an 02 to compensate. Note how in carefully avoiding getting the post sticking out of the chimney, I have attached it to the top lamp instead. Empties going north are then crossed by another full load going south. Given the present weather, I have decided that PN shall for once be shown under threatening skies.
RMweb Premium thegreenhowards Posted June 14, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 14, 2019 Thanks for all the help on my Thompson kitchen car from people on here a few weeks ago. It’s now finished, so I thought I’d show the final result. I managed to sort out the underframe fairly well. Jonathan’s trick of twisting the dynamos with pliers seemed to work well - thanks! I had some problems with getting it to go round curves without the bogies fouling the underframe which I don’t remember on these conversions before. But some ruthless filing away of plastic seems to have sorted it. Not having to bother with an interior is definitely a time saver. Andy 12

What's more, we finished only one point behind the winners, and finished........ninth. Some old fool three putted four times on the back nine too. This evening though, the monsoon has returned in full force. Here is another shot of Sun Castle, as it starts away towards Grantham. What did you expect? Honeyway? Ocean Swell? No such luck. How about 60521 Watling Street racing through Peterborough North Station.

Not racing, as noted below, but a loco which in a previous incarnation was Watling Street still runs on PN. It was 60521 when it ran on Stoke Summit, and Tony offered it to me many years ago when he was upgrading to DJH A2s. When the present PN started, I decided to change it to 60513 Dante, a much more common sight. Tony was most understanding, I'm pleased to say, even though it had been one of his early locos.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted June 14, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 14, 2019 One more look at the 02, which needs to get across into the yards smartish. as Victor Wild is not far behind with the non stop 2.42 Newcastle FO relief.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted June 15, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 15, 2019 Golf today, and it is not raining.......yet. Woodpeckers have designated my garden their own private cafe, though some starlings do not agree. Stock of bird feed rapidly diminishing. In other news, Victor Wild is back into daylight. And Wild Swan looms large as it runs through with another Friday relief, this one from the West Riding.

Regards David Dante was the only A2/3 I ever rode behind. Mallard whisked us down from KX toPN early , hitting 90 on the way, only to come off at PN and be replaced by Dante which lost 6 minutes struggling puffing and panting up (i.e down )to Grantham . Terribly disappointing. Not surprising that Thompson never joined Gresley in the Rock n Roll Hall,Of Fame. Edited June 15, 2019 by jazzer
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted June 15, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 15, 2019 Tonight we have Wild Swan waiting for the off, while an L1 arrives with the 2.45pm from Hitchin. a litle while later the L1 has reached journey's end, and Wild Swan's train is still at the adjoining platform.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted June 16, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 16, 2019 The new book arrived yesterday, and I've had time for a quick flick through. I agree with Tony that there are a lot of dodgy captions, and grammar and sentence construction aren't up to much either. I believe that both of those may have been abolished though? The images are very good though, and most of them are new. Later I shall examine the shots of PN in close detail to see what I can discover that I haven't seen before. Wild Swan was still waiting for the off, so the camera got pointed at it again. It was going to be a conventional side on shot, but then I thought a front end close up might be nice, so it was cropped. I'm pleased with the result. this also shows the quality of Tim' weathering. Very hard to discern that this is plastic now. There was a recent request from down under for another B17 or several. As expected the 4.20pm to Harwich obliged, though it isn't a different loco. After all 61643 would not be sitting at the coaling stage just to look pretty, though it did.
RMweb Gold trw1089 Posted June 16, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 16, 2019 Thanks for the B17 Gilbert, but I’m still drooling over that shot of Wild Swan, so perfectly “Timmed”! Just sent you a PM too. Cheers Tony

Could you have a word with the photographer and see if he has anymore negatives of the L1 he could develop and let us see ? There don't seem to have been many of them through PN, although the only one I ever saw there was slipping and sliding trying to get a three coach local ( presumably to Nottingham ) on the move.

I'm afraid not. The loco had to reverse its stock to the carriage sidings pretty sharpish, as it is busy on the Down main at present. There were two ways an L1 might get to PN, either from Hitchin, or from Grantham. Back in the distant past we discussed whether Grantham did use them on the locals, and I came to the conclusion that it must have occurred occasionally. Hitchin had lots of them though, and the choice for this mid afternoon stopper would almost certainly have been either a B1 or an L1. My Hitchin B1 is not very well, so the L1 got the job. And how could I have resisted one when Hornby announced it? 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted June 16, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 16, 2019 Lots of trip workings around PN, even after the rationalisation and closing of some of the many yards in the mid 50s. This J6 only has to go as far as Stanground sidings at East, but it has a pretty substantial load for a change. Someone is being very hopeful again, and pointing the camera straight into the light. A silhouetted J6 is the result.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted June 17, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 17, 2019 The 3.10pm Newcastle is next on the scene, with one of Top Shed's roller bearing fitted A1s on duty. 60156 was normally a top link engine, and this train seems to have been a top link duty. We can have a look at the formation of the train, as it has recently become feasible, for the first time, to portray it correctly. Two things stand out, firstly that this and the corresonding Up working were the only Tyneside trains not to have a catering triplet set, and secondly the number of BSOs included. No wonder it was filed under "too difficult/expensive", for so long. I don't know what happened here, but by the time I saw it the train was all back in cassettes, so I couldn't rectify it. You my be able to see that it is another BSO.
RMweb Premium Grafarman Posted June 17, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 17, 2019 Beautiful coaches, and a lovely mix of liveries/types; any particular reason for the number of BSO's...? Just curious... David
