RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted January 5, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 5, 2021 Umseke. The only named one I saw, on a down GC express. I was bunking Neasden shed at the time!
RMweb Gold jollysmart Posted January 5, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 5, 2021 Mayflower. Quite an evocative name for its historic links.

RMweb Premium Metropolitan H Posted January 5, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 5, 2021 My vote goes for "Gnu" - but apart from the last of the LNER built ones there are so many good names for locos on the Bongos, so my choice is a bit arbitary. LNER4479
Leslie Runciman (61238). Never heard of him before but he's been 'clocked' working a train from Carlisle to Newcastle in 1954 so he gets my vote!

CUTLER2579
61028 Umseke 14D, saw it so many times on Neasden Shed whilst walking round waiting for Father to finish work on a Sunday afternoon. Unlike some people who would bunk sheds. One Sunday afternoon I was walking up the path from the canal feeder to see Police,Ambulance and Fire Brigade attending to a young West Indian fireman (Railway) who had slipped and lost half of his foot under the pony truck wheels of a 2-6-4 Tank. Told by policeman in no uncertain terms to make myself scarce.

RMweb Premium thegreenhowards Posted January 5, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 5, 2021 I was tempted by Hitchin stalwart, 61027, Madoqua, the only one I’ve modelled. But I agree with Manna, it has to be Bongo for the Bongos.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted January 5, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 5, 2021 Arrival of the 9.40 Newcastle, with Knight of Thistle. Taken with a box brownie, this one. 60065 then moves on towards the Stanier tank, which will very shortly be coming off its train.

One of my colleagues has a Mazda Bongo ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_Bongo ) which is a funny name for a minivan - definitely not fit for a loco either so I concur!
RMweb Premium Metropolitan H Posted January 6, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 6, 2021 Again "Bongo", which I think must always have been a derogatory class name?? The Martin Evans' 5" gauge model of a B1 has always had the design name "Springbok" - which I think is a lot better as the class name.
