Woodcock29
Sir Keith Park for me as I had a ride behind the loco on the SVR in 2017 and because of his role in the BoB. Andrew Edited January 27, 2021 by Woodcock29 Typo

RMweb Premium great northern Posted January 26, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 26, 2021 Another very close poll, finshing Sir Keith Park 7 Royal Observer Corps 5. Today I am tiptoeing into waters about which I know little, so I'm hoping Dudders may come along and help me out. The Brighton Atlantics, BR classes H1 and H2. There is a GN connection, and there were some nice names.

FarrMan
I'll plump for Portland Bill. I wonder who he was? ! Lloyd 1
David Bell
I am sure you are just checking we are awake this morning. i was convinced you would go for the Merchant Navies next! for H1/H2 Atlantics I will go for Portland Bill
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted January 26, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 26, 2021 I’ll go with Portland Bill too. Rob.
RMweb Premium 3rd Rail Exile Posted January 26, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 26, 2021 North Foreland for me! I'm sure "Beachy Head" sounded a lovely name at the time (and I wish the Bluebell well with their replica project), but unfortunately its reputation as the last resort of some of the truly desperate means I feel unable to vote for it. Luckily, no-one I know personally has chosen that way out...
RMweb Premium TrevorP1 Posted January 26, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 26, 2021 Portland Bill please Gilbert. Been there a few times. We once had a distant relative who was a fisherman at Portland, although his name was Bob not Bill!

Sandhole
Lord Dowding. Picture the scene. Durrington station on what I believe is called the Coastaway Line. A young Chris and his Mum were walking away from the station in August. A whistle from the Brighton end and a filthy, unnamed Rebuild comes powering through on a parcels train. Lord Dowding. The fact that memory is still as sharp over 30 years later, is why that's my favourite BoB.
Sandhole
My second favourite is Trevor Howard, sorry Keith Park. Never saw it in BR service, but I had one of my best weekends on the K&WVLR when this loco was a guest. A storming run up the line to Oxenhope in the gathering dark. RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted January 26, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 26, 2021 I'm not sure what assistance I might need to provide to our host, who seems to be managing these enjoyable polls quite splendidly, as we would expect, really. The Atlantics only acquired their names in Southern days, of course, the Brighton having lost the taste for them during Marsh's reign. Hamilton Ellis opined "Names after headlands were, one supposes, alright" and "there was an ambiguity about Portland Bill suggestive of some character who had been a guest of Government in Dorset." Nevertheless I am also plumping for Bill, on the dual grounds that my near-neighbour decamped from la Sarthe to live there, while, if Sherry and I ever get together again in Devon, we walk up Portland Road to our fave pub, the Buccaneer at Babbacombe.

69843
Not a poll answer, but any chance of a shot of 60012 today Gilbert? Good date for it (though past the 1am mark on the 27th here now).

I went up to do some maintenance earlier, and found I couldn't see well enough, even with the fluorescent lights on.

RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted January 26, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 26, 2021 Sadly I never saw one of those lovely Atlantics. So I have to decline to suggest a fave name; my apologies. Horrible and grey and wet here, and that is just me. P

RMweb Premium Metropolitan H Posted January 26, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 26, 2021 I'm voting for "Peveril Point" as I have visited there many times over the year - with Happy memories of Swanage and its Branch Line. I've also been past on the wet side, by Paddle Steamer(s). Regards Chris H

LNER4479
I classify myself as a Mancunian by birth (grew up in Heald Green) so I like to think I know what I'm talking about! Have now emigrated to the North East - noticeably drier this side of the Pennines. 1
