These show the depth and shade of the replacement green better than those after weathering did.   I still say it's better as finished, but this could easily have been the starting point, in a parallel universe......

Well, firstly it is a thing of beauty in its own right, secondly it shows the depth and richness of a proper green, and thirdly it emphasises even more just how good a model Hornby came up with, if only they could control the lack of quality control and the horribly unrealistic efforts at BR green that they produce too often.

Time now for the 7.43 Up York, which has been monopolised by that filthy A2/3 for a very long time. Today though, we get to see another York engine, a not so filthy A2/2.

That A2/2 looks superb. A cracking job by Tim.

I heard a story of a pilot with a North African airline, who went back into the passenger cabin to speak to the passengers. The cabin door shut behind him, and he did not have a key on him. He proceeded to ask if any of the passengers had an axe in their hand baggage. Being a North African airline, someone did, and he was able to smash his way back into the cockpit.

Brian,

I have that article. I tracked it down a couple of years ago following your recommendation in the wish list poll. It’s very much about the contemporary operation in the late ‘60s by which time it seems it was mainly 16T mineral wagons. It also suggests that WD 2-8-0s worked it in steam days with an N7 on the branch, but I’ve read that B1s did it somewhere else.  There is a picture of an N7 working it in pre bogie sulphate days in ‘steam memories 42’: P54.

and a picture of an N7 with the bogie sulphate wagons in 1959 here (8th row down on the left).

Well that link threw up an unintended consequence.  Ever since the  BR version of the Oxford Rail N 7 came out I’ve been moaning about the coal guards over the rear spectacle plates  being the wrong type I.e they were the full height of the windows instead of the typical G.E .R half height ones, that were correctly fitted on the OR pre- nationalisation versions. I have found photos of every N7 , except, tantalisingly the one the OR model represents, 69612, but of the rear views I have traced, all have the standard GER Style coal guards, not the one represented o;the OR model.

Well, that link threw up an unintended result. Ever since the BR version of the Oxford Rail N7 came out I’ve been moaning about the coal guards over the rear spectacle plates being the wrong type ie they were the full height of the spectacle plates , not the GER half height type, that were correctly fitted to the pre- nationalisation OR models. I have been able to trace photographs of every N7 except, tantalisingly ORs 69612 , and all those have a rear view had the GER standard type coal guards ( except those modified by Gresley which were totally different so we won’t go there,).

However the link in your post second picture, top line shows 69629 with the full length coal guards over the rear spectacle plates  as per the OR model of 69612. Joy of Joys the is at least one photo showing the OR model is true to at least one prototype.

For those who haven’t a clue what I am talking about the first two pics in the second row show the Gresley modifications  ie round spectacle plates with full coal guards, and a curved bunker. Further down there is a pic of an N7 running bunker first into Wheathampstead, with the half length coal guards and straight bunker to

As 69612 was built at Stratford and 69629 built at Gorton these full length coal guards seem to be non-standard modifications probably as a result of damage to the previous design , unless anyone has better information.

Oxford Rail still got the shape of the steam dome horribly wrong for the later years of the class.

It's a lovely loco, Gilbert,

But you've got a recurring problem with Bachmann Mk.1s; pushed-in windows!

I've had to fix several of mine down the years - a fag getting inside......................

Hi Gilbert

In my opinion that is a stunning photo, a lovely angle to show off the lines of the A1 Class and superb weathering.

00 Rolling Stock Mini-Poll No.8: Departmental Stock

Hello everyone

Welcome to the final Mini-Poll concerning rolling stock that has at least some connection with Peterborough North. I am running the Mini-Polls on behalf of Gilbert. We will move to the first of three PN Loco Mini-Polls on Sunday – one day earlier than normal timetable – details later.

You will find ‘an indication’ of what we are looking at via the suggested example diagrams in parentheses as it is often impossible to be ‘deadly precise’ with a 1-line descriptor. We take the view that ‘if it looks like a Ballast Wagon, it probably is a Ballast Wagon or a member of the same family’. Recent past experience is showing that makers are ‘tooling up’ to make as many variants as they can for any new model.

You can submit your wishes here, on the thread, as usual, or PM me direct if you prefer the ‘secret ballot’ method.

If you vote on the thread, please feel free to explain why you have chosen your selection – hopefully, that will promote some interesting debates – but please do not take it as an excuse to start up the old chestnut of ‘kits vs RTR’!

Here’s what to do…

1. You may vote for any or all of the 10 items listed plus a response to item 11 (if you so wish)

2. They must be items you would realistically wish to buy if made RTR at ‘affordable prices’.

3. Submit your entries on this thread simply as (for example): 2, 4, 7, 9, 10 – with comments and explanations following.

4. If you vote by PM, please only list your selection of numbers without explanations.

Ballast

1   Ballast Plough Brake Van – LNER (1926)

2   Ballast/Rail/Sleeper Wagon – LNER/BR Dolphin (Diag.99, BR Diag.1/639)

3   Ballast/Rail/Sleeper Wagon – BR Sturgeon (Diag.1/638 etc)

4   Ballast Wagon 4-wheel – BR Catfish (Diag.1/586)

Crane

5   Breakdown Crane – LNER – Cowans Sheldon 45-ton (1940)

Inspection

6   Chief Engineer’s Saloon – LNER DE900580 (1936)

7   Dynamometer Car BR – DE320041, later DB999500 (1951)

8   Track Recorder – BR Matisa Neptune 4-wheel

Loco Coal

9   Loco Coal Wagon – LNER 4-wheel 21-ton – Wood (Diag.207)

10 Loco Coal Wagon – LNER 4-wheel 21-ton – Steel (Built 1935 & 1947)

11 Other Departmental Stock you would like to see made.

Please give an indication as succinctly as possible of anything not listed above that you would like to see made.

Get your thinking caps on and get voting! I will acknowledge receipt of your vote via the ‘Thx’ tick box.

You have until 17.00 on Thursday 8 July. However, I will stop earlier and advise if votes reach 50. I will present the results during the day on Friday 9 July.

I look forward to your selections and comments!

Brian

Hello everyone

I am voting for four items in this Mini-Poll:

* Ballast Plough Brake Van – the LNER van had the ploughs ‘inside’ the wheelbase;

* Dolphin and Sturgeon – because they are ‘distinctive’, useful and can be run loaded or empty;

* Breakdown Crane – on the basis that it was one of this type that was allocated to New England (according to the Peter Tatlow wagons book).

Does anyone know how far south – if ever – the crane might have ventured?

Not LNER per se, but I guess Mr Duck will be with me in putting the SR Walrus Ballast Wagon as an item I would like to see made!

Does anyone know if they got to Peterborough? Or did ballast for the area come from elsewhere?

Well with the District Engineer housed right by the main line, I could certainly find a home for some of these.

So, 1.2. 5.6.9.10.

1 and 2 to give some Engineer's stock, 5, because the crane must sometimes have emerged from the old shed, 6 as the boss must have somewhere nice to sit, and 9 and 10 because I can't have too many coal wagons.

I could justify all of these really though.

I've just done a rough count Tony, and I have over 100 of them. It isn't hard to pop the windows, so it isn't surprising that there will be two or three at any given time. Murphy's law dictates that they will be visible when I take photos. Tim can repair them in no time flat, and did two or three when he was here a few days back, but this photo was taken before his visit.
