Here is Leicester's venerable 2P, 40452, shortly to be on its way home, a journey it will have made many times before.

Good morning Gilbert,

I trust you're keeping well.

What an interesting loco. I'm making assumptions here (a dangerous practice) but it looks like a Hornby 2P which has been altered to represent a Midland-built 2P, with RH-drive (can I just see where the boiler has been filled-in on this side?). The tender has certainly been changed if it is an ex-RTR 2P. I assume this is kit-built? Or, is it a Bachmann tender?

My compliments to whoever did the work.

Regards,

Tony.

PS Seriously, Phil, many thanks for your concern. I can honestly say that I am 100% happy with the result in all respects. I have a pair of very old glasses that are 95% good. I just have to wait for an optician appointment for new prescription glasses in about a month, then I'll be back to where I haven't been for about 18 months.

It wasn't 'seriously bad' but needed doing.:)

As a BR safety film put it about 50 years ago "You're wearing your last pair of eyes now!" So pleased things have gone as expected.

Hi Gilbert

What is the origin of the Midland 54ft third behind the 483 class loco?

Good morning. For this poll, I’m voting for, 2, 4, 5, and 11.

The D2’s worked some Hull to York trains and would be useful for myself, and the D16 Claude Hamilton would come in useful too - one was used on a railtour through Market Weighton in 1957.

The K2 would be great to see RTR, and is a good class of engine.

Finally, the A1/1, although controversial, to say the least, it would make a fascinating model along with plugging a gap in the ECML pacifics.

I am indeed well, thank you Tony. I've been meaning to ring you for ages. Could you tell me when would be convenient please?

The 2P is Tim's work, taking a Hornby loco, substituting a Bachmann tender, and making it look at least more like the real thing.

Larry Goddard built and painted it from one of his own range of kits, Clive. Probably took him about half a day.

Ooops, nearly missed this poll!

I shall go for 1, 4, 5 and 7.

1 and 4 more for sentimental reasons as being elegant locos rather than ones which would fit the theme of my layout, although if I was ever to turn back the clock and get my 1930s stock out again, they would fit in well.

5 - K2 - possibly quite rare in London by the roughly 1958-1961 'window' of my layout but there were still a few about, and would make a nice model.

7 - B2 - I've been on about making one of these for years; have a Hornby B17 lined up to be a donor and (most of) a Crownline conversion kit, and various other useful bits & pieces but have mainly been put off by the thought of painting the BR Lined Green livery!  So an RTR one would be very welcome.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5 for me Brian

Initially I wasn't going to vote this time as I've got all these covered, well maybe not quite I don't have a fully valenced D16/3 and my D3 is currently being built with its extended smokebox for a superheated version.

However, if any of these were to come onto the RTR market I'm sure I couldn't resist a nice LNER version lined out in red! Or indeed a Royal Claud in green.

Hi folks,

I'm finding this thread fascinating as I also plan to model Peterborough North station, once I have managed to complete my attic conversion, although I will be modelling it as it was in the '80s; my teenage years and the era I started my interest in the railway. Of course, by then the canopy had been removed and there was a further platform added.

I have a good collection of diesel locos which were often seen in Peterborough in the 1980s, as well as a few steam locos (by then were only doing chartered runs; Mallard, Flying Scotsman, etc.). I also remember the 08 shunter that would often be seen resting around the side of the ticket office behind platform 1.

I've managed to find a few photos of the station in the '80s, but always interested to find more, with details such as the signals, I know lights were in use by the '80s, but I can't recall if the older semaphore signals were still in place. I will make a fresh thread once my loft conversion is underway and I can get started on the layout. I'll be modelling a few landmarks north of the station too - I'm still swithering whether to do Marholm crossing as the level crossing with signal box (where Walton station once was), or the concrete bridge which replaced it at the beginning of the '80s.

Also, I would like to mention what a marvellous job @great northern has done on Crescent Bridge and the ticket office / platform buildings. However, after trawling through the thread, can't find anything on how they were modelled, of course by the '80s, neither the platform buildings nor the bridge had changed much, so I'd be interested in using the same design & techniques for my layout.

Thanks @great northern for keeping this post active, I'll be taking some time out to read the entire thread in full.

I hope my post earlier today wasn't seen as hijacking the thread. Apologies if so. After reading further, I've noticed the discussion has since moved on from the topic of building the setup to running the trains. I'll make my own thread when I get started on mine. Again, apologies my post was not on topic with the most recent posts, I hadn't read the entire thread before posting.

Not at all. We bounce around all over the place on here. Reading the whole thread would be a considerable feat in itself! Very little of the old set up was left by the 1980s. The frontage was completely new, the old island platform gone completely, as were all the station buildings. If there were any semaphore signals left at all, it would only have been within what remained of New England yard. So, all that would be left of what is on my model would be the two bridges, the Great Northern hotel, and the Up Platform itself. All of my buildings and the bridges were made by master builder and craftsman Peter Leyland, though Crescent Bridge is formed around a Roco bridge kit.

Here comes Gannet with the Glasgow. The photographer will have a very short life if he keeps standing in places like this.

It makes quite a dramatic picture though.

Or is a very short man and can duck under the approaching train?

Thanks very much to Brian and Gilbert for these polls.  I'm scratching my head to try and think of another!

Infrastructure came to mind but I can't get much further than somersault signals, water columns and fencing (already available from Isinglass).
