RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted November 9, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted November 9, 2020 We are coming towards the end of the early evening departures from KX, just two more to come. The first is the 6.35 Hull, bringing yet another Grantham A3, Victor Wild this time. Here is a close up of the A3 at rest. Only nine on, so further back than usual. I don't think it works, but I leave it to you to decide.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted November 9, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted November 9, 2020 Tonight we look at the 8.10 Grantham local, formed of the stock which arrived as the 5.00 from KX. Seagull also arrived from there, but rather earlier, having brought in the Heart of Midlothian. Its next duty will be back to London from Grantham, and this is how it gets there. The Welwyn Garden City to Colwick Class D then comes through on the main, headed by one of New England's few K3s. I am wondering whether I could justify a Colwick engine on this duty in future.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted November 10, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted November 10, 2020 These high level views from Spital Bridge always seem to be popular, so here are a couple more at slightly different angles.

I love the K3 shots. I hadn’t realised New England had any left by 1958 but they do make a nice change. 1

Just five left in 58, and they rarely worked south of New England, but I reckon this is the sort of duty they might have been diagrammed for. I have a photo of an Immingham K3 coming under Crescent Bridge with a Class C, which the caption says is 58. The loco has the late crest, so it may well be correct. I think so long as one doesn't overdo the unusual and turn it into the norm, there isn't a problem. I can't find a Class C working which would have been an Immingham job from KX, but the photo shows that it happened, and the loco got down to London somehow first, didn't it? I’m sure lots happened which wasn’t diagrammed. Look at all the Gresley and Thompson coaches in rakes which should be all mark 1. I cheat by moving my year to the early fifties when I want to run a K3 or O2! Edited November 10, 2020 by thegreenhowards
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted November 10, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted November 10, 2020 Two locals waiting for the off tonight. The Ivatt will as far as South Lynn, or possibly all the way to Melton Constable. and a close up of Seagull, which will go just 29 miles to Grantham.

RMweb Gold A Murphy Posted November 11, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 11, 2020 There is something very pleasing about that rear three quarter view of the Ivatt. Lovely stuff, best wishes, Alastair M 4
RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted November 11, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 11, 2020 Having being woken up by the full frontal of the N5, I must say I love the K3 shots, Gilbert - full of that infrastructure that is so missing from todays railways. Bar OHLE of course, which doesn't count (ducks from incoming from Clive!).

It is also shown as working out of KX quite early the following morning, another summer Saturday only job. Here it is. I have a mass of these coaches in a painted sides ready to assemble. Have you put separate door handles and grab handles on them? Thanks to my near death experience during lockdown and the fact that I think the handles on the sides look good when painted, I'm going to build these sides, as is. They will obey the belt and braces rule and my mortality has been impressed upon me. Would appreciate your opinion, please.

I sold a lot on years ago, which I regret now, actually. They were built over 30 years ago, so I had to go and have a look at them. Two of four corridor cars have handles, as do two of the non corridors . The others have none, so I reckon that I must have decided after doing the full job a few times that I'd had enough of it! I did have to look quite closely to spot the difference just now. Most of my Gresley stock is either professionally built, or resided Hornby cars, so they do have everything they should have. I wouldn't be able to see the handles now, let alone fit them. 1

Far be it from me to try to dictate to anyone how to build their stock, but if you stick with the mouldings then you'll only have door handles and not the commode handle beside them. I think those are one of the easiest and most effective ways to lift Kirk sides. All of mine, especially the ones used on Grantham have been enhanced in that way. 2

RMweb Gold Market65 Posted November 13, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 13, 2020 (edited) Good evening, Gilbert. I’ve been looking through the good book by Hugh Longworth, British Railways Pre Nationalisation Coaching Stock, Volume 2, SR and LMS. In pages 407/8, the LYR Hughes, non corridor thirds are covered, to diagram 98. 54’ 0” x 8’ 10 1/2 “. 25tons 15 cwt. M15204M, is one from lot number N31. It was introduced in 1921, (no other information is given), and withdrawn in October, 1959. The original number was 13860. A fascinating subject, railway carriages. Best regards, Rob.
