RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted November 17, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted November 17, 2021 Now we come to something I do remember well, as this train actually arrived during Clive's visit a couple of weeks ago, sending him into paroxysms of delight over what he somewhat deludedly referred to as a " proper" engine. One just has to remember that people just can't help these things. The train is another Leicester local, the last one of the day. 27 1 4

It looks like interesting stock on the Hull Gilbert. My CWN shows it as mainly Mark 1 but it’s one of those secondary expresses which I imagine would have featured older substitutes. Do you have a photograph to base this on?

Just taken from the summer 58 CWN, Andy. I doubt it was a much photographed train. Just the TSOs, FK and BSO are shown as being MK1. RK/FO came off at Doncaster, except on Fridays, when they went on to Hull. Next workings for those shown as 1145 Leeds-KX, except Saturday, when they were part of the 1115 Filey-KX, as was the rest of the rake, save for the leading BZ and BG. Weekdays, apart from the BZ, next duty was the 1715 Hull-KX. 1

There is a similarly timed down train where the catering comes off at Donny. Is that what we’re looking at? Andy

I thought you were referring to the train which I photographed in full, not the one I posted yesterday and today, which is indeed the 1715 Up Hull. So yes, I gave all the details of the 1835 Down in error.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted November 19, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted November 19, 2021 One more look at the B1 and the fish, now passing the Ivatt 4, which is just beginning its journey. This morning I have looked at the B1 again, as it is still sitting in the fiddle yard. From normal viewing distance, and using an ordinary human eyeball, it is difficult to see anything wrong with the lamps at all. 27

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted November 20, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted November 20, 2021 Now something good to report. A fellow past captain of the golf club mentioned to me a couple of weeks ago that he has a 10 year old grandson who is mad keen on trains, and asked if he could bring him to see my layout. They came yesterday, and the lad is terrific. He seems to know a good deal, and about the days of steam too. He could quickly identify classes of loco when I ran them, and was just generally impressive in his general knowledge, and desire to learn more. I've offered to reach him how to operate the layout with me, and he seems very interested in doing that too. Grandad is building a little layout for him too, so I gave them some old magazines and Freezer books which I had lying around. Nice, intelligent and well behaved lad, and I'm now a bit more optimistic that there is still some hope of the hobby carrying on when us old uns have all fallen off the perch. It wasn't till they had gone that I wondered why he wasn't at school on a week day though. 19 9

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted November 21, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted November 21, 2021 The classic view of an approaching Up train, when taken from the Down platform, often included part of the bracket signal, so it isn't surprising that when I go for that shot, it is visible too. The problem is that because of necessary compression, I can't get the camera far enough away to avoid in being somewhat out of focus, as can be seen here. I've done my best with this, but it isn't very good. This is a really nice view, and one I want to carry on using regularly, but would it be better if I just erased the signal, even though it should be there? All opinions gratefully received.

Gilbert I like the view and one option is to simply crop the top so making it a nice wide photo with not much sky. Andrew

RMweb Premium 31A Posted November 21, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 21, 2021 (edited) I don't mind the signal being there actually. As you say, it appears in a lot of pictures taken at Peterborough station so it helps to set the scene. Also adds a bit of interest in the left hand corner! Inerestingly, the offending signal is not there in my Father's pictures from the Down Platform in the late 1930s (pre-WW2, when grandfather was sitll at North Box)..
