RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 30, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 30, 2019 There has been an inspection of the forecourt area, and an order has gone out for something to be done about this. Even years before elf and safety, that is not deemed to be acceptable. On the other side of the building the Birmingham - Ely has arrived, and train and relief engine are seen side by side. Nora Batty was asked to move, but she's deaf as a post, so there was no response.

Then, as the sequence progressed, the Elizabethan was due, and it was the Scottish engine on the Down train today. Unfortunately our photographer got so excited that he made a pig's ear of every shot he tried, the one below being the only remotely printable one. Even on that one, the ****** headboard has slipped, after I was very careful to set it straight before the train set off. Re photo along Crescent Bridge, from memory it did drop down quite steeply on the other side, so that photo fairly accurate. Lloyd
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted April 30, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 30, 2019 In number 4 bay we have an Ivatt4, which will shortly take a train destined for Yarmouth as far as South Lynn. Next to it is a Cravens unit which has come in from Louth which is of course close to the home of a great DMU fan, and therefore entirely appropriate. Further along to the south, the Standard 4.6.0 is coming off its train, and meets Grantham A3 60105, which is hauling the 9.40 KX- Newcastle.

Just pretend that the engine shed is still there, and two C12s are simmering outside as well, please Clive. If it works, I'll call in and have a look myself on the way over to yours. RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 1, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 1, 2019 A reverse angle view of what we saw last night. Then fast forward a few minutes, and we can watch 61653 getting under way for its short trip to Ely.

I think the engine shed was over by Buckets the horse tack shop Mrs M uses, so when she is looking at saddles I will pretend they are C12s and J3s. RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 1, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 1, 2019 Today, even by my own standards, I have been remarkably idle, and do not feel in the slightest guilty about it. There were still some photos in reserve though, so here is a side on shot of 61653 to start with. It was followed into Platform 2 by yet another Ivatt 4. The train has come from Yarmouth, but you would have to have been at Beach station by 6.10am in order to catch it. I really do wonder if anyone at all would have made the full journey.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 2, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 2, 2019 A lot to do today, so just time for one quick photo, which shows Mons Meg at Platform 6, ready to start away with the 1130 FO to Edinburgh.

Have one of the firemen set the wrong headcode or was it really a unique service that changed from Stopping Passenger to Express Passenger for the last leg of the journey ? Having said that, my recollection of my one and only trip from Ely to PN, was that there weren’t many stations to stop at anyway ( although that was behind a Brush Type 2 at a somewhat later date than the photo )

Anthony
We used to live in Buckden, unfortunately in the area supplied by Little Barford power station. This is going back to the 1950s and 60s, and what sticks in the memory most clearly was that it only took the mildest rumble of thunder in earshot for them to cut off the supply! My recollection is that thunder was more frequent in those days than now. Were those 'the' days? Anthony

As far as this one is concerned, putting lamps in position is getting more and more difficult, so if I can get away with it, I do. I don't have the WTTs for either the Midland or the Eastern for this train, so I don't actually know which is right.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 2, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 2, 2019 Didn't get very wet today, which was OK. Golf was also OK, but putting was not. My granny could have done better than I did, and she's been gone for nearly fifty years. Mons Meg is still waiting, as shortly will be the J6 bringing a trip working along the Down slow. Having removed sundry tools and other things which I'd had to crop out of the first attempt, I had another go at the view along Station Road, but it still isn't up to much. 26

Without giving it much thought I always “assumed”the fireman would work it out particularly as the whole pattern of what was class A or what was class B was very inconsistent, especially on the Western, but since it was to assist the signalman then if course logically it would be on the WTT.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 3, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 3, 2019 Nearly out of images again, but its a quiet day in, so if we get a bit more daylight I can go and advance the sequence somewhat. The Ivatt we saw running in is now simmering away, while waiting the signal to take the stock down to the carriage sidings. I tried another shot along the forecourt, which is OK, apart from the fact that some of the background is impossible to clean up to put a sky in. Here it is as the camera saw it.

I've had a quick look at my WTT. The first example I can find is the 5.50am KX- Grantham, which ran Class A as far as Hitchin, having stopped at Finsbury Park and Welwyn Garden City. From there, it changed to Class B. Thereafter it stopped nearly everywhere, but also was turned onto the slow goods line from Sandy to Abbots Ripton, a distance of 19 miles, which took forty minutes to negotiate! Definitely not Class A material. A couple more Down trains did the same, both Class A to Hitchin, but then switched between the goods line and the slow goods line for many miles. There were some on the Up too, all the Class B running taking place on the goods lines, which I believe were heavily restricted for any passenger train. 1

It only happened a few minutes before, so there hadn't been time to clear it up yet. Alternatively, I leant forward and blew it off from further down the road, and where it went, I did not know. But I do now. 1

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted May 4, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 4, 2019 Little light was available yesterday, but our men did what they could, and got a few shots of the Flying Scotsman as it passed through. Here are the first two. The rest haven't been processed yet, as I was out unusually late last night.
