RMweb Premium Popular Post 60027Merlin Posted July 16, 2010 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 16, 2010 This layout has taken a decade or two to build and it's just about there! The track diagram at the junction is based on Longniddry (with a few amendments)on the ECML in East Lothian but at the planning stage I decided that pragmatism must rule as to model it correctly or various other suitable locations would require another 20 feet of a straight length. My view is that modelling an actual location is preferable if you have a lot of space to do it justice but it's no use trying to cram everything in and spoil the effect. However I have tried to get the general atmosphere north, south, east and west of the city to give a flavour of the glory days with the glamour boys of Haymarket. As the saying goes "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder" and for me the LNER pacifics were the tops. Of course many other classes relevant to the area are to be seen.I managed to crawl into the 21st century at Christmas time when my wife gave me a digital camera for Christmas and it is only recently that I started to practise with it. I did not use any spotlights etc. taking these photos as I don't possess any! Hopefully they will get transferred across as I was half way through this and it all disappeared and I had to start again. My computer knowledge is minimal so it's all down to blind faith! Kit building is infinitely easier! 20

Jamie
This layout looks great, yet another top notch scottish layout on the forum! Can't agree more with Charles' post. Wonderful East coast atmosphere, and beautiful stock. I'm sure other NBR fanciers on the forum will be inspired by what you've achieved here.

Ben Alder
Good to see another ScR layout, and one from another part not often modelled in 00. It certainly gives an impression of the openness of the area, and I am looking forward to more photographs- keep them coming Richard
Andrew F
Another fan here too. Some lovely scenes and mouth watering loco's. Welcome to Scotsweb Cheers Andy

Guest Max Stafford
Another top class Scottish layout on the forum. This is excellent work and a real inspiration for those of us who haven't put track to board yet! I'm also impressed with your rendition of 60813, might I ask how you produced the stovepipe and deflector please? Ta. Dave.

I'll try to move them across to here. I'll take more photos hopefully next month as time is limited due to the busy gardening season!

I'm also impressed with your rendition of 60813, might I ask how you produced the stovepipe and deflector please? Ta. Dave. The loco, a Bachmann V2, was "done up" to match the kit built stuff about 7 years ago. Unfortunately I cannot give you exact detail of the parts used as they were from the infamous "scrap-box/spares trays" which often feature in articles. The parts used in these said articles never seem to be mine!! However, I had a few close up shots of 60813 and worked by eye rather than using exact measurements. I used part of the centre piece of a whitemetal chimney which by my reckoning looked the right radius and used spare etching, from memory, from a W.D. 2-10-0 kit cut to shape, once again making it up as I went along.
RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted July 17, 2010 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 17, 2010 I could not manage to transfer the photos from Galleries so I just went back to square one and transferred this selection mainly those shown in Galleries. I haven't a clue what I'm doing on this computer or any one for that matter so hopefully this will end up in the right place! I'll have to sign out now as the battle with Mother Nature awaits in the garden in between the bad weather we are having just now. It could be worse though - by playing in The Open at St. Andrews where the wind is surely blowing!

pH
Great pictures of excellent modelling. I like the little touch of the hosepipe over the side of the cab on 65235 - quite common on the prototype, but rarely modelled.

Saint Johnstoun
You've spurred me on to creating 60813 from one of my V2s so will have a go and report back. Where did you get the smoke deflectors for Humorist?
RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted July 24, 2010 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 24, 2010 You've spurred me on to creating 60813 from one of my V2s so will have a go and report back. Where did you get the smoke deflectors for Humorist? They (purchased and fitted about 20 years ago)were produced by the sadly gone now range of loco parts from Crownline. It's a great pity as they were an invaluable source of fittings etc. for the four Grouping Companies plus the BR Standards and like Eames of Reading are a great miss. Guest TomTank
Lovely layout, real credit to all your hard work. I love seeing Gresley, Thompson and Peppercorn Pacifics at work so very much drawn to those photographs. Always think it looks nice seeing the Scottish Pacifics with Blue Namplate backgrounds, looks smashing on Golden Plover. Very inspirational, look forward to seeing more. 'CHARD
All the earlier talk of 60813 reminded me to cut'n'paste this from another thread. I had no idea of any cult status when I posted it a couple of days ago: I'd just checked the St Boz clip ready for posting as you were writing that! Instead, how about this V2 on a beer train - note the LNER high-steel opens - at what looks like, dare I say, Galashiels.... http://ssa.nls.uk/film.cfm?fid=5492 Needless to say it's probably not Gala at all, but it's definitely 60813 hauling ale! Many thanks for posting this film clip here. It just ouses a wonderful railway atmosphere with 60813 moving away with ease, oh happy days! I could replicate the first part of this goods train as I have a few wagons fully loaded with barrels so that's something different to set up in the coming months for one of the running sessions. These wagons are usually used in the freight train including some of the LGW vans, which were a feature on the Edinburgh Suburban Line.
RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted September 17, 2010 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 17, 2010 (edited) Now that we are well into the Autumn and gardening is slowing down I was able to use the additional free time take a batch of pictures recently. For a working model railway the usual summer work of track and scenery maintenance etc. carried on as usual throughout the summer in preparation for winter running sessions. When working in the garden last week I heard the first sounds of the geese flying in from the north high in the sky and heading south. I thought that to tie in with that, as it will take some time to sort out all the photos, that a handful of "snaps" for RSPB members in RMWeb may be of interest. Hopefully they will be, they are of the species 64B. Edited October 4, 2014 by 60027Merlin
