RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted October 31, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 31, 2020 Gateshead and Heaton locos were daily visitors to the Waverley Station and Haymarket Shed and for something of a change here are a few of their regulars to the city. Haymarket occasionally borrowed them when short of available locos for quick turns to Glasgow Queen Street, Perth and Dundee before returning south again. I remember seeing a fair number at Saughton Junction including Madge Wildfire, Prince Palatine, North Eastern, Manna and Ocean Swell. No doubt there were plenty more but I cannot recall them offhand!
dunwurken
Copped them all at one time or another at Craigentinny! Some look a bit cleaner than I remember them but that said we are talking 55 to 65 years ago and my memory may faulty . Lovely photos. RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted November 1, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 1, 2020 Malcolm, No doubt that your memory is still OK. I decided to finish them off as per circa 1958/59 with a grubby appearance sporting shades of green when there was still a bit of cleaning rather than the all over caked grey look of a year or so later! RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted November 27, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 27, 2020 Another selection of views of various trains on typical workings in the area. All taken for granted in these far away days.
RMweb Gold trw1089 Posted November 28, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 28, 2020 Certainly not taken for granted here Eric, I love the mundane. There’s always been too much focus on the glamorous workings, when the lifeblood of the railway was the regular, mundane runs that earned the revenue. Cheers Tony 1 1
RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted December 1, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 1, 2020 Something a bit different with 60502 just running in. I started it in May along with an A2/3 and it is taking longer than I anticipated to finish both of them. Too many domestic tasks my wife thought of with all her free time resulting from this Covid19. Hopefully it will not be too long before the A2/3 is completed - then there is the painting!
BrianMac
Eric, Thanks for the last batch of photos . Wouldn't it be great to be behind the fence on the embankment with notebook and camera! Brian

Good afternoon Eric A lovely selection of photos and model locomotives, in particular the smaller classes. I do like the lighting effect you have achieved in the photo of A4 60027 Merlin. RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted February 24, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 24, 2021 The latest arrival now running in. Finished in the condition of its last 16 months before withdrawal. An occasional visitor to the Waverley and of course Haymarket Shed along with the other two from York. Haymarket never thought about about borrowing them for a quick out and back turn!
RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted March 6, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 6, 2021 A couple of more photos of 60501 now with the cut down tender front which I had forgotten about when doing it up recently. Keeping its company are a few photos from the archives of other locos from south of the border, from Gateshead and Heaton, who were more familiar visitors than 60501 from York
davidw
How did you cut it down?
RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted March 6, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 6, 2021 1 hour ago, davidw said: How did you cut it down? David, I used a slitting saw fitted in the mini drill and took 3mm of the top about one third in on each side. then took off a small bit on each side finishing of with a fine swiss needle file to bring it to shape. I had a spare tender fairing from the infamous spares box and glued it in place adding a touch of filler where appropriate. I should add that the slitting saw is extremely dangerous so 100% concentration is required. I don't like using them unless nothing else will do, however they do make for a clean and tidy job. For 60516 how easy was it to lower the number plate to the smoke box door strap?
RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted April 5, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 5, 2021 David, It is fairly easy to do if you can get the smokebox door out. If you take off the chimney with a gentle tug with small tweezers (put a small piece of cloth/napkin over the chimney to prevent marking it) you can then put a longish swiss file or something similar through the hole and press it against the smokebox door. Then give it a gentle knock with a small hammer which should see it come out, unless a lot of glue has been used which does not seem the case for other fittings on these locos. With the door in your hand it is fairly easy to carefully cut slivers of the plastic numberplate away with a scalpel then smooth it down with a fine emery paper. Finish of with a coat of paint and that’s it! Eric 7
davidw
Thanks I built 60516 from a DJH kit. I'm temped to do that with Steady Aim and rename renumber the DJH kit. Especially as there seems to be more Steady Aims about that Sun Castle

Eric Hi Eric Very nice weathering work, guess what I tried your technique and I must have the only Hornby A2/2 that's well and truly glued on as the smokebox door will not budge. So I have left it as fitted for the time being with number plate in wrong position. Regards David
