nerron
Lovely group of photos Eric.I have just finished a PDK D30 (62440) but have yet to do the lining on the splasher to finish it completely. Could you tell me what you used on your D30?
RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted May 13, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 13, 2018 Ron, I built that Scott, a GEM kit, when it was first produced in the 70s. I used a draughtsman's bow pen as nothing was available in transfers. For a couple of PDK kits built a few years ago I used Modelmaster B.R. mixed traffic lining with the grey line trimmed out. You could also use that lining in full and then paint over it as an alternative. Hope that this is of assistance. Eric

I'll also look at the HMRS sheet as it has red lining for LNWR loco splashers and see if I can adapt those.
RMweb Gold trw1089 Posted May 14, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 14, 2018 (edited) Another great set of photos there Eric, though that black 5 sneaking into shot had me a bit worried that you may have defected. The pic of Sir Visto left me in no doubt though! That is a cracker shot and shows off the heft of the A3 front end very well Cheers Tony Edited May 14, 2018 by trw1089

The pic of Sir Visto left me in doubt though! That is a cracker shot and shows off the heft of the A3 front end very well Cheers Tony Tony, As the North British and Caley lines often ran near each other it affords the excuse to run the occasional ex-LMS loco mainly from Dalry Road (64C) for a change. In the train spotting days when Dalry Road Shed existed it was only a short walk to there from Haymarket Shed or vice versa depending on the time of day for train arrivals at the Caledonian Station in Princes Street. There were usually rare Black 5s, Jubilees etc. on the daily Birmingham trains making a visit to Dalry Road Shed worthwhile. I attach a couple of 64C locos which were photographed a couple of years ago. I must get round to photographing some more but it is all a matter of free time! RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted July 21, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 21, 2018 Freight turns on the layout now have another two locos in the roster. Both are the J37 Norrie Blackburn kits on Jim Binnie’s Eastfield Models chassis kits. The locos are both from St.Margarets and appeared from time to time on the Corstorphine Branch even on the occasional passenger working there. I completed them each with a different weathering finish, one being recently out of Inverurie Works having less work stains. Now for the next kit building jobs!

RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted October 16, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 16, 2018 Three more locos now built and run in for the layout, only the painting and lining plus the odd detail to finish off. It’s amazing to think that they had been lying around in a friend’s house for about 35 years before I purchased them from him a few years ago. The N15s are Norrie Blackburn kits on Jim Binnie’s Eastfield Models chassis kits and the C16 a NuCast one originally produced by Sutherland Model Casters. All vintage 1970s. The N15 to be numbered 69220 is Haymarket’s “Big Gorgie Pilot”. These are the last of the North British Railway kits I had left so it is now time to tackle other stuff. Where will it all end?
RMweb Gold trw1089 Posted October 17, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 17, 2018 Nice work there Eric, they've come up very nice. What did you do for the chassis? Been hunting around for a Nucast C13 or C14 (not sure which one is available), as I wouldn't mind doing a pseudo scratchbuild using various bits and pieces. Cheers Tony
RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted October 18, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 18, 2018 Tony, The C16 chassis comes with the kit. It only consists of the brass frames and spacers for the driving wheels as the front and rear frame outlines are part of the one piece footplate/running plate casting. It affords you the opportunity to add as much or as little by way of fittings as is practicable for running on the layout. South Eastern Finecast can usually supply pats for each of their kits which may suit you for your C13/14. Eric

RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted November 14, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 14, 2018 Some more photos taken some time ago featuring various services back in the late 50s. I have not had sufficient free time for more recent photos as another bout of loco kit building surfaced last year and I am still "bashing on" with that. Lastly, is the latest loco just finished last weekend after a 2 year on/off building it. Painting will be done later along with the previous 3 others in the recent posting when I feel like it! It was transferred to Haymarket in 1959 replacing another J88 which was withdrawn and was used for work around the Shed and also in Gorgie Goods Yard. The J88 working there was known locally as the "Wee Gorgie Pilot".

You have models of classes of locomotives as a non kit builder I can only dream of, J36's, J69's, J88's D34's and K2's all fabulous locomotives. There is a ray of hope in that Hornby's new J36 class will be available as and when it finally turns up in the Model Railway Shops, January 2019 is the latest forecast now from Hatton's. Please keep sending your photos, I find them very inspirational. Regards David Edited November 14, 2018 by landscapes

RMweb Gold trw1089 Posted November 15, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 15, 2018 Beautiful set of shots Eric and the J88 is coming along a treat. I only have one complaint, could you tell the shedmaster to get the cleaners to give Velocity a good going over. Can’t have my favourite A2 looking so manky (though I believe it was in that state more often than not given Gateshead’s liking for grime). RMweb Gold BMacdermott Posted November 29, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 29, 2018 Hello Eric As noted in our recent PMs, I have now been able to have a look through this amazing thread which - for reasons unknown - has managed to evade my attention! The layout is jam-packed with detail such as loco cab tarpaulins and little cameos such as a man inside the goods shed and loco crew chatting, as well as the numerous little cats and dogs. The b&w photos in #443 are just so evocative. You have managed a remarkably smooth blend of kit and RTR. In his post #329 of this thread, Tony Wright summed up my own feelings: Rarely have I seen such natural-looking locos. In his post #393, he added: Has anyone else captured the flavour of ER/NER/ScR motive power so well? If RMweb runs the BRM Awards for 2018, surely this layout must be a contender? All the best to Eric. Brian
