Hi Peter, Good to see the Shed going up, and mighty fine it looks too. Is it in a slightly different place to where you originally said last time I was up? It appears to be in the Car Parking area by the Gate now. It will be a big bonus once it's done as you will be able to wander out and work on Layouts any time, morning, noon or night without having to Drive, so a real bonus all around.

When do you expect to have the Layouts moved in? and will you have a dedicated workbench area and good heating?

I've also sent you a PM.

Al the best,

Andy.

Hi All

Here are a few more shots of the state of play of the shed a week ago.At present it is getting flooded out each time it rains as it still needs the covering to be placed on it. We are about two weeks now behind what it should have been.

In reply to Andys  comments  it is on the opposite side to where it was going to be It should have been ready for the layouts to be moved into it by the enf of june but  I have now lost the help of the electrician and  Stuart (Future son in Law) due to the lateness of the build so dont know when the move will be.

Any way getting there slowly

Cheers Peter

Hi all

Last Thursday thebuilder finally got the weather proof lining on the roof so at least it is water tight now and we have started doing work inside. Don't know when will get the main felt on the roof and get it all finished. Seems to do a day here and then goes off doing other jobs. Anyway here are some photos taken at lunchtime on Saturday showing the liner on the roof and the start on the cutting of all the polystyrene for the walls. When that is completed will be covered with a thermal lining and then clad with ply. Then the false ceiling will be installed followed by all the electrics and the new floor.

The good fun is going to be getting the layouts moved from the unit.

The biggest problem am going to be faced, as is an area I am out of my depth with, is the conversion of Whitland Sands (The layout that has been in store for the last 17 years), GTD, Glen Gillie and the coal mine layout from analogue to DCC. Or whether I can run the 2 systems together. One of the main problems is going to be the conversion of about 300 engines to DCC.

Will take a few more shots today if the weather improves as most of the poly has been completed and we are now ready for the next stage being the thermal barrier.

Cheers

Peter

Nice job Peter.

I would definitely try to avoid mixing DCC with DC, we tried it on our Cub Layout with a two way switch, the result was a Sound Chip on a DMU and a Circuit Board on another DCC Loco burnt out, and a Motor on a DC Loco melting on the DCC because we forgot to remove it from the Rails.

Please keep the pics coming.

All the best.

Hi all

A few more shots showing the start of putting on the thermal barrier ready for the plywood skin. Didn't do much on Tuesday with the rain. Builder still not come to finish the roof and sides. The 2 end apexes are bowing badly in the wind and needs additional supports. The door which I fitted has swollen and is a ###### to open and close. At least the inside is dry.

Will keep you posted with further details.

Cheers

Peter

Hi all

A couple of shots showing the plywood facia going on.

Out of the last 7 days there has been 3 days when done nothing because of the weather so up to this morning have got it all insulated out and 6 sheets of the ply fixed and half of the walls with the thermal insulation on. Still no sign of the builder to finish the roof and the sides with the shiplap cladding.

At present those that know where we live will understand when I say that only tractors and 4x4's will get through the water going down the road. A good job the shed is on stilts to clear the big stone! At present there is a good few inches of water underneath it.

Will keep you informed.

Cheers

Peter

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi All

Well in the last two weeks a lot has happened. The builder has left the job because I wanted the roof properly finished off in long strip lengths and he was not going to do it. He then complained that his tressles would not reach it and I did not have anything to reach the roof that would fit between the stream and the side of the shed. Also the end walls which are moving in the wind he said to screw them to the railway that would hold them in place .Anyway he came back between 6pm and 7am on the Sat/Sun and took his planks and tressles and left some bits of Ship lap. So to date the ship lap has to be finished off, the end walls have to be strengthened, the floor has to be sorted out. The walling seams are to be finished and covered and the roof covered. So we are trying to get another builder in to finish some of the work . The only trouble is he has now been paid for all the work.

Anyway enough of that, Inside all the ply panelling was completed last weekend and the walls have been having the first coat of paint completed. The false ceiling trusses have been started together with some of the electrical cable trunking. So here are a few shots of last weekend before painting started Hope to have the second coat done by weekend then we can get the electrics installed.

Hi Peter,

The interior is looking very good - I like the electric trunking and I see that there is going to be insulation in the roof as well.

Why is the end wall going to be tied into the roof - because of the local weather conditions?

Hope adding the cable itself goes OK.

Hi Peter

Thanks for the comments.

The end walls are being tied back to the A frames due to the builder leaving them in a far from satisfactory state. There is a least in on end wall a eight inch (200 + mm) deflection both in height and width so when it is windy they move. The roof is having a suspended ceiling which will be insulated and fitted with 12 strip lights. Most of the ring mains  have now been completed other than those down the centre which will be completed when the new floor is fitted. Still a lot of work to do and I am atb the hospital again tomorrow. Any way Wendy is of work next week so she will be helping with it all.

Cheers

Peter.

  • 1 year later...

Hi everybody

Its 12 months since I was last on with the saga of the new shed. In that time I have been in and out of hospital having had an accident to my hip after a major fall, massive chest infection. On the good side though I did have a holiday in Canada for nearly a month last September and attended my eldest daughters wedding. Did get some good shots of Cananian railways as well as some beautiful scenery.

Anyway the result of all this was that it was end March this year before I was fit enough to resume work on the shed. The inside has been all completed with the new false ceiling, lighting and painted floors but we are still awaiting over the last 3 months for an electrician to connect the mains cable from the house to the shed. In the meantime we have started transferring a lot of the paintings and memorabilia from the old barn and store into the room. The next stage is the transfer of some of the layouts and re-adjusting them to fit into the room which is inside 17'6" x 46'.

Attached are some photos taken the other week showing the room. Will hope to take some showing some of the layouts being installed but due to my health problems it is taking a little longer..

I was sorry to read in the past threads the death of Alan Downes, he will be sorely missed.

Great to see your latest post Peter - I was worried. I am sorry to hear about your health issues, but glad to hear of the successful holiday and family events.

The shed looks great, I look forward to seeing further progress.

Hi All

Many thanks for the comments Andy, Dave & Imsforever. Well in the last few days I with Wendy have managed to erect the storage sidings and the two boards of Whitland station as well as two of the three boards that will have the new MPD on them. In the process we have reduced the leg height by 4in.(100mm) which will allow us to bend over the 3ft wide boards of GTD without breaking our backs. It is hoped that by the end of weekend we will have some of GTD up from the shop unit and and liftout across the door fitted.

Still waiting to have the main cable for the electrics  fitted as well as some locks its now going on for three months  with no power in the shed. Will try next week with Wendy if the sun stays out and no rain.

In furture I will be only entering information and photos on the new thread "The Final Dream" but I do not know how you place a link from this thread to the new one. Any one out there that can help without going to Andy Y.

Will put some photos on of the progress in the next few days.

Peter

If there is anybody out there that would be interested in buying these layouts (Glen Gillie, Loch Inch and Bridge of Muir) I would love to hear from you. Glen Gillie and Loch Inch can be run as one layout or can be sold as individual layouts with Glen Gillie ending at the station as seen in the early part of this thread, and Loch Inch taking over from there.  It would be such a pity if I had to destroy them after all the work that Peter put into the building of them.

Any reasonable offers would be considered on any of these as I would rather they go to good homes where they can be appeciated.

Please pm me if you are interested in any of the above.

Wendy
