Hi everyone,

Another loco I decided to model 37422 in its plain blue DRS livery has been completed on the work bench. It's fair to say the DRS fleet is a bit of an obsession and on my last trip to Barrow 422 had been put onto one of the Cumbrian Coast sets following the failure of 37401 on the Monday. It became an obvious choice to me to add a bit of further variety.

I think the original model started life as 37406 in railfreight distribution livery but thanks to Andi Walshaw of Cairnsroadworks fame it was stripped and joined my DRS fleet as 37409 in compass livery long before I got the Model Rail version. With several other 37/4's modelled by Bachmann this one has sat in its box so I dug it out thinking I can just strip off the decals off. Of course being one of Andi's repaints the decals were well applied and the model well protected in varnish. A couple of evenings work with cotton buds and thinners cleaned this up and again thanks to the quality repaint the base blue survived in tact apart from the grills and a few spots on the body side. Phoenix P230 DRS blue touched up the damaged areas and I found using a brush dipped in thinners I could get a reasonable finish overall.

I detailed the front end from my photos adding in the parched yellow paint, blue stars and white lamp brackets. A new centre bracket using a Vi trains part was added.

The numbers were added from a sheet Colin and Mike had given me at R3sprays. I also painted the cab handrails silver and added kick plates from the excellent chequer plate in Phil's Stenson Models range which adds a bit of relief to the plain blue.

The bogie springs were also painted red. The loco still needs a dusting of dirt which will help blend it together and will get Bifs newest 37 sounds fitted in August when our group attends St Andrews show.

Model photos below and a couple from my recent visit to Barrow. Hope you like it.

Thanks

Mark

Hi Everyone,

With modelling time more limited these days little quick projects are ideal to fill the odd hour I get. Bachmanns recent metal sector model of 47359 in triple grey was an ideal choice to create one of the numerous plain Railfreight distribution sector 47's. As my future project is set around 1992 I need a couple of RF 47's and from searching online 47359 changed from Metals to Distribution during 1991. This meant only the removal of the metals markings was required and the rest of the details such as tanks, lights etc already match the real thing. Using Humbrol thinners and a cotton bud the printed sector markings came off cleanly and easily with gentle rubbing. It goes quite green and a little wipe with a small cosmetic sponge in thinners left a nice clean body side. I left overnight before adding new decals using Replica Railways sector markings. These are great value, strong and have good colour definition. Using Mirco Sol brushed on the body side before application gives a really good finish. Pipes were added to the front end along with the bogie detail parts. The Bachmann 47 details are pretty good except you don't get a main red tap air pipe. I file the red steam pipe smooth, a little fiddly but looks fine once fitted.

Hope you like it,

Thanks

Mark

Hi Mark,

The class 47 looks good, it's nice to have an easy job without to much to do to a loco to get the one you want. Should look right at home on a Speedlink service or even a passenger working standing in for a failed class 31.

Cheers Peter.

Cheers Peter this early 90's era is quite appealing given what's coming out to make modelling it easier. Quite colourful in amongst the decay adds to the interest.

Dave, I will look forward to seeing more 47's enter service on Waverley. I think 492 will be right at home possibly on an Inverness turn.

I've got hold of another construction 31 to rebrand into coal sector as 31324 next and Tornado support coach is slowly progressing only been sat around the bench for the last year. 31467 is the worst must be 5 years now in progress!

Thanks

Mark

Hi everyone,

Following an enjoyable weekend at St Andrews show I fitted sound to another of the DRS 37 fleet. 37419 is a respray from Cairnsroadworks with correct noses with LED style marker lights, etched window frames and a whole host of tiny decals along the bodyside. It's a superb loco from Andi but has spent far too long stored in its box. Bifs latest Wensleydale 37/4 sounds were chosen to add variety and this has a nice new feature of the wheelslip when opened right up when setting off. I'd found photos of this loco on the West Highland Line with the autoballasters which gave me the perfect excuse to put it into service. With a few quick tweaks to top speed settings 37419 is seen working south bound at Rannoch. The wheelslip feature when setting off on the curves at this end of the layout is superb and you'll be able to see this in action at The Great Electric train show in October.

Thanks

Mark

Hello everyone,

As part of my plan to run more up to date stock at The Great Electric Train show at Gaydon this October, I've been looking forward to this spotty number from Oxford Diecast coming out. Whilst in Edinburgh on Monday I managed to sneak in a quick visit to Harburn Hobbies which is always worth a visit whilst in town to pick one up.

I've found painting the wheels weathered black and adding a coat of Matt varnish takes off the shine. A final touch of silver with a pen on the wing mirrors and its ready for the layout. A nice quick job but makes a difference. Should look nice alongside a new 156.

Thanks for looking,

Cheers

Mark

Hi everyone,

The new transit has made it to Rannoch. I think Scotrail sent a few extra staff there as the station has been visited by a chap with his Bradshaws guidebook.

Mr Portillo and film crew add a little different cameo and he is part of Mike Petts Supercast range. I saw the ad in Model Rail and thought I'd give it a go.

Apparently he has heard about those new superb 156's which all being well will enter service at Gaydon at the Great Electric Train show. The other clever part to this plan is the two large boxes will be far easier to sneak back in the house with the rest of the stock boxes!

Thanks

Mark

as good as I remember. hope 422 is better than the real one.  Nothing but trouble for me on the Cumbrian Coast jobs.

Like seeing 419 on those ballast hoppers at Rannoch, brings back some nice memories for me of working up there with that loco.  What a cracking loco it is.

Brilliant layout.

Hi Mark,

Hope all is well.

Just thought I'd post a few piccies showing the current state of 47492 which is now passing through the WW works with my other Bachmann 47s. I'm giving 492 the same treatment as the others. I hope you don't mind but I've removed the old bodyside transfers (Stag and ScotRail) and put new ones on. I put two Stag transfers on each side, one on top of the other, to get good depth in the yellow over the dark body.

I've also applied a coat of satin varnish to seal it all in. The underframe has now been weathered with my usual combination of Railmatch Dirt frame/Roof dirt/Weathered black, garnished with a layer of weathering powders..

I need to leave the body for a few days now to make sure the varnish is properly hardened and then I'll be able to weather the body. If you've any preferences as to how weathered you want it, just let me know. I was planning on the usual "relatively clean but in service" look that I prefer for most of my fleet, as that's how I remember most locos being most of the time. She looks very smart as she is, near ex works, too mind!

If you ever decide she's surplus to your requirements, let me know and I'm sure we can come to some arrangement! I'm looking forward to running her on WW.

Cheers for now,
Dave

Hi Dave,

It's looking great and will be nice to see it running on Waverley, it will fit right in. Happy for you to judge the amount of weathering as your fleet always look superb. The only thing would be to make the roof quite dirty as a lot of the photos show that nice sooty black build up on the yellow cab roofs.

Thanks

Mark

Will see what I can do, Mark. I'd noticed quite a few InterCity/ScotRail 47s with very dirty cab roofs too, so I quite fancy having a go at that.

Cheers

Dave

Hello everyone,

The journey to the Great Electric Train Show is fast approaching and I've just finished the final tweaks and fixes and packed Rannoch and stock ready for the long journey south along with Keith's superb Bere Banks. We are looking forward to attending with support from members of our Group Scottish Modellers and DEMU.

For those able to attend the show here are some details to look out for and for those not going I hope you enjoy the shots too. I took the night ones tonight as I found a photo on Flickr looking down from the footbridge end and wanted to see if my model lighting could create the same atmosphere having tried to copy the mix of bright white and warm white with the blue RETB boards in the distance. It's not turned out too bad.

See you at the show.

Thanks

Mark

Love the photos, Mark. I'm a big fan of layout lighting, as I think it's almost like having another layout. There's a lovely and very different atmosphere in those last few shots. Those details add a lot too. Thanks for posting.

Hope all goes well at the GET show.
