Class 26 cab door windows

It was the Inverness allocated class 26s that had the door window mod. This was probably a result of a local demand by the drivers LDC.

The 27s were elsewhere and either the problem didn't arise or it wasn't deemed necessary to fix it.

As far as the IS 26s are concerned, the mod. to the door windows took place some time after the token exchange equipment ceased to be used (and later was removed) and from which time token exchange was by hand. The height of the token exchanger was somewhat lower than that of a signalman standing on a station platform handing over the token. (Quite a few photos show thistaking place).

It may be the case that, on single lines worked over by the 27s, token exchange was done either from ground level or only when the train was stationary and thus the problem of broken windows would not occur.

The problem of damage by tokens had been noted earlier in East Anglia, and many DMUs based at Norwich (Derby and Met-Camm 79xxx, Wickhams, Cravens etc.) had a rubber pad added to the body between the drivers side cab door window and the leading saloon window to protect the bodywok. This mod was certainly in use by 1962 and some survived on Cravens cars until withdrawal in the late 80's

Not quite.

Around 1973-1974, the majority of 26001-26030, were allocated to Haymarket, including 26001-26007, the MGR locos, which would never have seen token-exchanges and these were converted as well. As far as I can make out, ALL 26s ended up with plated-over cab doors and NO 27 ever did.

I don't really buy the fact of the token slapping around and breaking the windows being the cause of the modification. The locos wouldn't have been travelling fast enough, when the tokens were swapped manually. Surely, if this WAS the reason, wouldn't it have affected the 27s as well?
