Popular Post BlackRat
Lovely day for a walk along the old GWR trackbed from Princetown on Dartmoor. Walked along it many times but today the sun was right and was catching on what looked like an odd bit of rock to the side of the trackbed. Cant quite decide if it is or not......... firebox clinker.......what do you think? 20
Popular Post lightengine
6 hours in the 'ambulatory' at the hospital yesterday determined that Mum didn't have a PE on the lung. The sun arrived lunch time but presently it looks a bit like thunder. Mid morning I popped into town to get some meds. I have never seen the town so full of females over 55. It was heaving with them. At one cash machine there was a queue of about 8. Maybe a convention of knitters or curtain twitchers is being held locally. If so Wetherspoons will be busy at 5pm. 13

But since that would have to be forn=med on the surface and the granite of Dartmoor was formed 10km underground this is unlikely. Clue here is in the vesicles that were gas bubbles. South West examples include pillow lavas at Porthustock and on the coast at Geevor, and just north of Weston-super-Mare. Bute depends where is it is could be scoria, slag from copper/tin smelting. There's a lot of that round Hayle used for building, but it's not exceptionally durable and placed built from it tent to fall down after a hundred years or so. There walls alongside Copperhouse Creek, walk round St Uny churchyars and a hut outside Philack church all made of the stuff. Really depends where you found it, but let's deploy most likely material. RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted June 25, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 25, 2019 (edited) Well it started wet and has turned out not wet, apart from all the stuff that landed overnight/early this morning. Forecast seem to have been spot on!!!! Now Black Rat's clinker - well it definitely looks like clinker to me although it might be furnace slag. The line was built in 1876 so I doubt it was firebox clinker from the time of building but if it was found near the site of Ingra Tor Halt it could indeed be firebox clinker from the engine that got stuck there in the snow as its fire must have gone out and could well have clinkered due to lack of attention and poor draughts as the snow built up. The Good Doctor's flight appears to be on time as it heads westwards so all depends now on teh wind staying steady anfd Gatwoick not being in an operational shambles due to the weather. The next stage depends on her getting from teh terminal to the station in double quick time, fingers crossed. Enjoy the rest of your day. RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted June 25, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 25, 2019 (edited) Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Not as muggy as it was this morning but still a bit sticky. Cold chicken and salad for dinner so no cooking to do. The poppies are blooming well, not surprising after the watering they received last night. RMweb Gold Popular Post grandadbob Posted June 25, 2019 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 25, 2019 Evenin' each. Dentist visited and all OK with no problems. Following that we "needed" to go to Sainsbury's to top up supplies. Both of those visits entailed walking and after that The Knee was exceedingly painful so b#ggerall else has been done today. I phoned the surgery this afternoon and no X-ray results yet but the cholesterol test has come back "satisfactory." I.A.M Pissedoff. 1

RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted June 25, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 25, 2019 Evening. Quick look in. Wry grin at all the podiatry/diabetes chat - before I left the UK 17 years ago, I was the manager...….of a large (50k appointments a year) podiatry department. Shan't be giving any advice other than to say don't work for the NHS too long, it kills you. Read Adam Kay's book (This is Going to Hurt) to see what it dos to many Doctors. You will laugh and cry. 12 1 3
RMweb Gold Kingzance Posted June 25, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 25, 2019 The mysterious package arrived mid morning and turned out to be the new 18-140mm lens for my camera. Given that I ordered it yesterday and didn't pay the extra for next day service, I was well impressed. Add to that the price was more than 30% lower than retail list with free delivery, I am very pleased that I chose this supplier - one I had not previously heard of! If you feel an urge to purchase photography equipment, may I suggest that you at least look at AshtonLittle.com! Having got the car back (no expensive shocks thankfully) and then ferried No1 grandson to and from golf lesson, I have grilled my fresh herrings and am about to depart to Crib School. Sadly, amber liquid will not be on the agenda for me as I have a fasting blood drawing tomorrow morning so just water this time. I bet my cribbage skills will descend to a level comparable to England's Cricket Team as a result. I have also (perhaps unwisely) volunteered to play at least 9 holes of golf next week on a par31 course on teh Isle of Wight, hoping the hip will allow me to do so. 18

That and Ash Barty entering Wimbledon as the number one player is a nice little pick me up after the Matildas' departure from the Women's Soccer World Cup earlier than many had hoped. Without rubbing it in, I'm quietly celebrating what may well be the oldest enduring rivalry in organized International sports this afternoon. 13

Popular Post Ozexpatriate
Here's my incongruous moment of the day. I was at the Post Office (the USPS mind, nothing Royal about it) and they displayed a poster of some new stamps. The transcontinental railroad sesquicentennial stamp and the USS Missouri, 75th anniversary of commissioning stamp are very nice by the way. I think I will purchase a couple more sheets of them. My creditors' accounts receivable people won't care, but I will enjoy using the stamps. There's a 50th anniversary of Woodstock and the Lunar landing coming as well. What of course drew my eye as incongruous is the illustration at the bottom of the poster. Somehow one of young Mr. Stanier's finest Swindon clones has made it into advertising for US stamps. It's a funny old world. 20

RMweb Gold Popular Post The Stationmaster Posted June 25, 2019 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 25, 2019 The Good Doctor duly collected from Reading station - more magnets for the fridge doors (several in Russian of course) and she seems to have enjoyed herself/is glad to be home. I forgot to mention earlier that the morning's post included a plain brown cardboard wrapper which turned out to contain a 'bookazine' (apologies for using that word) containing lots of nice pictures of BR diseasals. The enclosed note said 'thanks for your contribution' etc and indicated it was a complimentary copy from the publisher - who also happens to be ChrisF's publisher. Rather nice in this day and age that a publisher is kind enough to send out a complimentary copy of a £10.99 publication to folk who, certainly in my case, did little more than give some help with information for captions and in identifying locations.
