Morning all,

 

Today we are promised much shining of the sun but that won't start until this afternoon (they say).  For now we have ten-tenths cloud cover but at least they don't look like rain clouds (yet).   Although we are currently on LHR approach, or more accurately where aircraft from north of that approach turn to get into the stream for 09L  the cloud is in just the right place to ensure we can't see the aircraft although it doesn't mask the noise of course.  Only good think about it is that contemporary airliners are a light quieter than their predecessors.  The fun aircraft such as Merlins and Chinooks tend to be lower, and noisier, and we'll no doubt have a Spitfire or Typhoon on Saturday week but the real aircraft fun will come next month when this lot visit -

Just received this mornings mail. In it was a letter from the PPI people. I opened it up and the first line read "Your PPI claim has been re-assessed." I thought that if they want any back its tough luck because its been spent. But no, they have found that they owe me another £950!

FIA super- licenses I believe, more mundane competition license holders and circuit staff requiring assistance not available in the Med-Centre or longer recuperation periods had to put up with a road trip along the A43 into Northampton or to Coventry, Oxford or Kettering. Events that required some competitors to hold the super-license meant that a helicopter had to be present. 

 

I had to give up that game after my Myocardial Infarction so it may have changed by now.

Natalie, thanks for sharing, that's something I've come to appreciate in ER here. Everyone has a story and each can only improve our views of human kind and "hopefully" make us better people and more respectful of the different experiences we've all had.

 

Pedestrian day yesterday, nothing much to report.

 

Today is the Mrs birthday, already provided her with breakfast in bed before I shuffled off to the office to work.

Not a lot planned as her major "request/gift" was to see Bob Newhart (yes he IS still alive and kicking/performing) Friday at a local theatre. There's major comedy week going on here and he's one of the attractions.

She said dinned before the show would be just as good as something fancy tonight - I can manage that

 

18 first thing - was actually OUT THERE getting fresh muffins for the Mrs breakfast - heading for 30 and severe thunderstorms later apparently!

 

Grab the carpet, or whatever else you can  at least I THINK that's how it translates

Wall to wall sunshine here now.  Two diesel trips on the Ratty completed with nothing of note, just another cracking day on the railway.  It was a bit cool on the first run, as it was overcast, but the second run was almost all sunny and warm.  

 

My attention has now now turned to replacing the drive belt on our bread maker.  The manufacturer wouldn’t sell them as spares, as it is too difficult to get into it, but I managed to find a third party supplier.  Instead of dismantling the whole machine to fit the new belt, I just took a small grinder to the plastic underside where the drive is housed, having seen this advice on YouTube.  When I got inside, the old belt was completely shredded.  New one now fitted and it seems to work OK, but will be tested in earnest tomorrow morning with a bread mix.  All this with no thanks to Morphy Richards whose advice was to buy another bread maker from them, as they wouldn’t supply a belt.

Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. I tried to get into my E-mails and all I got was 400 Bad request. I contacted Virgin Media and it turns out their e-mail will be down for 48 hours. I've noticed a few flying ants inside the house over the last couple of days and I've just discovered where they are coming from, a corner of the patio door frame. They have now received a dose of ant powder which will hopefully dispose of them.

I didn't use a PPI firm, I got onto the bank directly and found a claim form on their website. Completed the details and the information* that I had to hand and four weeks later I received the cheque. It was so easy that I would advise not going to one of the firms that claim to do it for you. Firstly I know someone who did before I started my claim three months ago and they are still waiting for an outcome and secondly they grab 25% of the payout. It might be that some banks are not so easy to deal with as my one (Citibank) but try the websites of those banks that you have used. *Basically the account number.

Been a bit hectic since we got back from holiday - LASAR yesterday, and putting up the new cupboard today.  We found that it was just too big to go round the bend and up the stairs.   So it was back to plan A, taking down another smaller cupboard and putting that upstairs instead.  Except that the cupboard in question was 50" wide and the alcove upstairs was 491/2" wide - and we had measured, but made the cupboard 49" but we must have been mistaken.  It is now sitting in the spare bedroom until we can sort out a new location.

 

Anyway - back tomorrow (?)

I went direct to my bank for PPI claims for both bank loans and credit cards and it was surprisingly easy and I was paid out very quickly. They did turn down a couple of claims and unfortunately I couldn't back them up with written evidence but I still ended up with a very nice 5 figure sum. 

 

Several hours spent in the shed today and I now have 3 boards ready for the O gauge stuff.

Moving fingers for typing a few lines is just about the maximum I can do without breaking a sweat as it’s still 30C right now. Down from 37 in the afternoon, I should add. Consequently, last night’s sleep wasn’t terribly good either! Cats and Albert the rabbit aren’t doing much of anything either, and neither does Charlie the beagle at FiL‘s. Can’t say I blame them one bit.

 

Generic congrats and commies as appropriate. Thinking of John and Sandy in particular, and wishing Tony and Aditi a pleasant trip.

School prom 4 of 7 done.

Tonight's eejit #1 in a borrowed Porsche, showing off which much revving off the engine.

After first trying to run down Junior NB by driving too quickly as he turned into the hotel driveway and then a conversation with Mrs NB, put him top of the list.

The vehicles are queued on a gravel track out of sight of the front door before moving around to drop off the passenger(s) to the waiting onlookers.

It is not the smoothest for speed control reasons. Mrs NB is the corner control to wave the vehicles into place.

Mrs NB had advised said driver to move slightly to one side to avoid a bump that may catch the front spoiler.

His reply was "don't tell me how to drive".

Mrs NB politely waved him on to the sound of grating plastic.......

 

More posing with engine revving ensued. Once his passengers were dropped off, he then proceeded to get out of the car and chat to "admirers".

He was now holding up the rest of the arrivals and Junior NB - like me - doesn't stand any messing and firmly asked him to move out of the way.

Between ouselves we can usually work out who will then floor it back along the main tarmac driveway out. This is a safety issue as there are parked vehicles, people walking around - and me on point.

When this happens, we move a few cones to make a bit of a chicane.

His problem was is that he didn't notice the cones at all and put his foot down on the sharp bend before the straight drive and promptly ran over two cones as the car surged forward far quicker than he could control...... to much merriment of the gathered masses as most of them had alteady worked out that he was a bit of a prat.

As expected, he tries to floor it again towards my junction, but I was ahead of the game and didn't give him chance as I stood between two very narrow spaced cones

I was ready to jump out of the way, but he stops with a laugh.

"Which bit of driving like a D!ck did you enjoy?" I ask.

Still laughing, but not for long as I informed him that he's damaged the front of his car and walked off. This time it was me laughing.

 

Second eejits in a convertible.

"Can we set off some flares in the car please as we drop off?"

A firm negative answer was given by Junior NB.

Correct answer, as once one does it, then the next school proms will do so. (And they are a potential fire risk)

"We're going to do it anyway" was their arrogant response.

Cue me asking them not to do it.

Again the arrogant response.

My reply was to calmly walk into the hotel and pick up a fire extinguisher and stand in clear view of them.

"What;s that for?" they ask.

"To put out flares".

 

Said flares were then put away.........................

 

FORE! tomorrw morning.

Evening all from Estuary-Land. John, very sorry to hear about Scruffs but in the circumstances perhaps its for the best. Mick, I would have been tempted to wait until they set the flares off and then used the fire extinguisher. At our exhibition we (again) will not be able to have our usual second hall and we will have to make do with a gymnasium which although slightly larger is some distance from the other hall and does not have disabled access. Our usual hall is required for a tap dancing exam. We were diverted to the other hall back in 2017 at even shorter notice.

The automotive one-upsmanship that Mick describes seems to be locally grown.

 

US Senior Proms certainly can involve much silliness (particularly in recent years with over the top "promposals") but as far as I know*, "fancy" arrivals at most US Proms mostly involve limousines and party buses.

 

* I don't pretend to be an expert in this subject. I imagine there are You-Tube channels full of such nonsense and I have no interest in spending time on that. I did a (very) little Googling and much of the 'over the top' prom arrival content I saw was from outside the US and a surprising amount of it was British.

Best idea too. I also asked one of the companies that offered a PPI recovery service and they did identify the Citibank PPI but by then I had made the claim. Theres nothing to stop anyone using these companies to find if you have any PPI claims and then applying yourself.
