Mosquitos (non malarial fortunately) are a problem here too, usually in the evening. I don’t seem to get bitten as much as Aditi but I don’t spend as much time tidying the garden as she does. However this year she has been applying a  cosmetic product allegedly used by Royal Marines to deter insects. She seems convinced it works.

Avon skin so soft,  original formula,  I have a bottle in my sailing kit..  It does work,  watch it, it's very runny coming out of the container.

Oh don't get me started about them.

Oh, ok if you insist....

So when I lived up that way I owned a Ford Escort with about 15k on the clock. Took it in there for a service and it got as far as the nearest roundabout before conking out. Never worked properly again after they touched it.

Like many garages they relied totally on a computer to say if a car was working. No matter the car wouldn't get above 5mph after they'd worked on it; their computer knew better.

Never bought another Ford and never will again. I'm guessing from your post that 25 years on they haven't improved a lot!

A yellow flag means the presence of pestilence.....

A lot of places in the US need to fly one of those.

I had thought the yellow flag (Q/Quebec) was the quarantine flag. Apparently flying the L/Lima, quartered yellow and black (yellow jack) flag in harbour means "The ship is quarantined." Once the medical situation is resolved Q/Quebec is flown to mean "My vessel is 'healthy' and I request free pratique."

The Coronavirus Task Force Briefing is back on television. This time it was broadcast from the Department of Health and Human Services and was entirely POTUS-free (though we did have a little sermon from the VPOTUS that we need to pray*).

* Based on the behaviour of those who ignore science this seems to be the last resort.

A series of data dense, grim graphs was presented demonstrated greatly increased test positivity in many sunbelt states - effectively refuting the notion that consecutive record diagnoses over the last two days were not simply a matter of increased testing.

I think it would be best described here as we pick the ones under the net and the birds have the rest. If they do turn out to have extra protein they can have all of them.

We have a clump of wild cherry trees in the woods immediately behind our back yard. The fruit tastes very nice, but the “flesh to pit” ratio is very low - the variety would never be commercially profitable. However, that doesn’t worry the local wildlife. We see all sorts of birds in the trees, squirrels and occasional raccoons. Raccoons are not small animals - seeing one perched on a branch twenty feet above your head, happily gorging itself on cherries is quite the sight. I’ve never seen a bear in a tree, though I’m sure it would support a cub quite easily.

Likewise here. I have only just realised that one of the trees overhanging our garden from the neighbours is a wild cherry. Very small fruit, presumably due to the very dry May, and the garden is rapidly filling with small cherry stones.

Good evening from a tired cream crackered associate in Deepest West Sussex!

Noticed on the rain radar that a thunder storm  was heading my way, so I made preparations. 02:15, nothing had materialised so went back to bed; saw some lightening in the far distance but heard nothing; evidence of a little light drizzle on the car this morning but nothing like what had been anticipated. Nett result: now very tired and disappointed.

Seems like more c0ckwombl3s phoned in today than more recently with their varying tales of woe! A two day weekend is not enough! Stress levels rising, partially as a result but also from the change in the dynamic of the 'core team' since the WFH and furloughed have started returning. However, la vie continue!

From the radio I here it's likely INTU will go bust this morning, they're the people that own the Trafford centre, The  Metro centre, Lakeside, and most importantly Chapelfield in Norwich.  Lots of daft talk of them being locked up. But of course the Administrators will keep them open to bring in some money to try to sell as a going concern. I can't see that happening with 5 billion of debt.. So I reckon they'll go bust taking the debt with them and then the centres will be sold off individually at a very reduced price.

Then, there's the Intu Centre in Derby and, probably certainly, many more?! Eggs in baskets, perhaps?

I'm glad that Chrisf was given the once over at A & E and hope that rest, Radox and codeine bring about relief. A word of warning about the latter - from past experience I know that codeine is often responsible for bringing on constipation, which would be doubly uncomfortable with muscular pain (in deference to our readers' sensibilities I won't go into any more detail) so a gentle laxative is recommended while taking it.

Very good point Dave. Opiate induced constipation can actually be very painful as stool consistency can alter considerably (and sh*t a brick becomes more than a figure of speech).

Chrisf, I know you’ve had plenty of advice on your ailment but I’d just like to add the following. The codeine is not a ‘course of treatment’ you can stops taking it or reduce the dose as you wish.

When I used to frequent Cardiff docks, one would often see ships about to set sail flying  P and Q flags.

P  meaning we are ready to go

Q confirming the ship had a clean bill of health.

Not something you see often with cruise liners:laugh_mini:

Long before the Blue Peter (blue with a central white square) was "P / Papa" it was flown by the Royal Navy (since 1777) prior to departure.

It was numeric code "2" in the Popham signal flag set.

Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. The window man turned up on time and replaced the hinges on the bathroom window and alls well. The fanlight is closing properly and sealing.

Cloudy.  23C and that is just indoors! Breeze coming down the stairs from the north facing landing window, ajar, going out through the south facing kitchen window, ajar, (kitchen door in open position at bottom of stairs) making the room feel cooler.  Works a treat!  Must remember that one!  Amazing how a little bit of GCE O level physics knowledge can help in time of need!

Fitt :training: and :danced: Elfie getting stuck in.

Take care and play safe.

Best wishes

Polly

I get the same effect but in an opposite way. By opening the fanlights in the north facing downstairs hallway and the south facing bathroom upstairs I get quite a noticeable cool breeze through the house from downstairs to up, it seems to cause a change of air in the bedrooms as well.

I had a cherry tree in my garden that had to be removed over 15 years ago but I'm still finding the remains of cherry pips in the garden though theres no cherry trees near.

I can cap that, we had hailstones. And a lightning strike about 100 yards away. [Stage Yorkshire accent]: It were proper Biblical for half an hour. Then a break, when the local birds had a splash about in a new swimming pool in the back garden, then another dose, though not as fierce. Now, the sun's out again and it's still hot.

S'funny you should say that.  I recall certain side-effects of Codeine all too well (I believe it was a Paracetamol/Codeine mix, though it was quite some years ago now).  Something along the lines of:

Contractions

"Keep pushing"

"Push-push-push"

"Stop pushing"

"Pant, pant, pant..."

"Now, one last, big push...."

"I can see the head!!"

"Congratulations, it's a boy!!"

"Check for blood....."

I swear I still have the stretch marks.

As for Codeine - no thanks, I'd rather hurt.  Not sure it has any benefit over Ibruprofen anyway (the 400mg jobbies, not the over-the-counter 200mg stuff).

You can always trust a bear to accurately provide a descriptor.

I don't need any assistance in that department.  It's definitely just straightforward 'Spray and Pray'.

I spray, any one in the near vicinity will pray!

Just checked my e-mails. The original trader who sent me the first wheelbarrow has just e-mailed to say that they have sent a replacement and I can do what I please with the other one.. The problem is that I have cancelled the order and arranged for the original wheelbarrow to be returned and ordered a similar wheelbarrow from elsewhere. I best reply to that effect but seeing as its a weekend I doubt if I can get to them in time. It looks as if I'm going to end up with two barrows with plenty of spares assuming they will fit (they don't fit together which was the original problem).

assume from your cryptic post, that you are referring to Sabrina. I have no idea if the volume is all authentic, but the shape is likely to be due to a heavily engineered Playtex bra (“separates and lifts” according to one advert for the brand).  Apparently such bras were the source of considerable anxiety in the amorously inclined schoolboy of the late 50s: how much was real and how much was padding? A concern, or so I am led to believe from the literature, very much uppermost in the minds of the average Lad who was discovering that there was more to life than Meccano and train spotting....

Mrs NHN got a POETS at lunchtime so we went out on the bikes as it is glorious down north.  Douglas (the seething metropolis) was as foggy as hell, so were the higher roads.  Back to the north, and a nice 60 mile potter about in the sun again!

15mm of rain last night, it sounded more, but wasn't like Baz's road!  No need to water the garden anyway, just as well as we have a hosepipe ban.

Douglas, that engine from HMS Terrible is one of two, so 12,000 ihp.  This 9 cylinder Sulzer 2 stroke 90cm bore diesel is 25,000 shp (an lot more indicated hp but I don't have a figure handy) 70 years later..... real horsepower this time not printed hp to impress the baddies LOL.

That’s one of the few 25,000/12,000+ hp steam engine Ive come across. The other was a horizontal twin tandem compound engine in Weirton Steel’s Blooming Mill somewhere in the Rust Belt. It was only scrapped in 2009 I think. The picture below is of the right HP cylinder piston rod extension. These engines  operated at such high pressures that they had huge clamps around them to keep them together, one can observe (from a safe distance) part of this on the far left.

What is/was code "1"?

In Popham's  time A blue vertical and horizontal cross on a square white background.

Perhaps we should all fly it when the rivet counters visit... Which is appropriate with its current meaning...

In sailing / racing flag P is the Preparatory signal normally flown  10 minutes before the start,  at 5 minutes the class flag goes up,  at start time the class flag come down and the next class flag goes up.

With the last class starting both flags come down..

The chart of Internationally recognized flags is below..
