gronk the shunter
One or two of you may remember my Over Hulton layout from the old RMWeb. It was my first effort at making a model railway since I was at school, which is a long time ago now. Over Hulton never really got more than about 2/3's finished, one or two dodgey track joins only discovered after ballasting, poor planning and disappointment with a the way a number of things looked, most notably my Bachmann 25's and 40's, meant that I lost a lot of motivation and the project stalled, gathering dust. After looking longingly at the locos from JLTRT I've decided to take the plunge. 7mm it is! So armed with £40 I set off on the perilous journey to Blackpool and came away from Tower models with my first O gauge kit, a 21 ton hopper. A couple of hours later here it is sitting in the erecting shop (aka on my coffee table in front of the telly) By the time I'd watched East enders though it'd already started to rust! Got to admit the thought of going fully into O gauge is a bit daunting, still here goes my life savings!
two tone green
I'm at a similar stage and about to scrap my OO layout, re jig the model railway room and go 'O'. I did my first wagon kit two weeks ago as well. Parkside Dundas PS30 BR standard 16T mineral wagon and quite pleased with it. Going to order the six pack from them and move into mass production. Is just the big decision do I break up the OO layout or not. Once I start it will be easier but its the first cut that is the hardest. My OO layout has been 20 years in the making and I am very attahced to it. Way off being finished but I do want a change. So 'O' it is for me as well. I suppose I have to now having bought a 37, 47, 08 about to arrive and Deltics on order along with Mk 1 coaches and wagons sitting in boxes ready to run when the track gets laid. 1st November is the start date to change things over. That's a big investment you've made already! I was umming and ahhing over buying the six wagon pack, haven't even plucked up the courage to buy loco's yet. But as soon as the rust is finished on the hopper I'm doing a batch of six 16 tonners too. Good luck on your changeover. Let us know how you get on. I'll be a couple of months behind you! You must do a masterclass on the rusting techniques please as its most pleasing to the eye I have 21 16ton minerals to finish for the layout Ian
Guest jim s-w
Hi Ian Have a look here, might help you out until Paul gets a change to write up his methods http://www.finescalerr.com/smf/index.php?topic=446.570 While no fan of 7mm scale I must admit the oportunity to do some really delicate texture work does appeal a little. two tone green
Hi Gronk, It will be a slow process as I work away from home so only able to play at weekend. But at least I can sit in my apartment and build wagons etc. As for a track plan, not sure yet as I want to get the basic boards built and then see what I can fit. Got fourteen by eight by three feet, a lop sided U shape to play with. Not going for a round and round style layout, end to end this time. Station, yard, fiddle yard as such. I'm aware of the space needed to do 'O' so not expecting complex track layout that I have now. Just looking forward to the bigger size, more working things that I could not get in OO. Long subject so best I start my own O gauge adventure on here for all to comment on. Getting things I think will be a challenge as it is a more specialist size than 4mm. But who said model railways would be easy. B) The Deltic is one project I am looking forward to with hopefully twin smoke generators and twin sound decoders to give the individual start ups and running. Will be talking to SWD about this soon to customise the ESU Locksound XL for my own use. I already had the Heljan Brush 4 as a nice to look at model but it is the Deltic more than anything that has made my mind up to go 'O'. Looking to get a EE Type 4 and a Peak as well which should then see me finished with locos. Well, may be a Brush 2 as well which could well put my regional division on the east coast but I live far west in deepest Wales. Oh well, such is life. Allegheny1600
Hi Gronk and TTG, That looks there there are now three of us who have made the decision to go 7mm! I have been dabbling in 7mm on and off for many, many years now but have recently decided to go for a small but decent British 7mm rather than an endless collection of 4mm that i never do anything with! I do have an added complication in that i have been a US H0 modeller for twenty years and i am keeping all of that and will shortly be writing about a new large project in that scale! Back to 7mm, i have recently put my name down on a Heljan Deltic in Green to go with my 03, 08, 31 and 37! Probably most of my modelling will be RTR but i do do some kit building as well, Slaters, Parkside wagons etc. Will be doing my bits and pieces in the attic as my big shed will be all US H0! Cheers, John E.

two tone green
Your right Jim, it is fun but a challenge at times. With out the challenge it would be too easy and no fun. If you understand what I mean. John, fully know what you mean about the endless collection of locos etc. I bought anything diesel that came out that was green. I have more stock than can fit on my layout. I've already had a few grand sales and whats left now still wont all fit. So an OO closing down sale is looming along with a grand DCC sell off. Want some locos John.

gronk the shunter
Hi Gronk, any ideas yet to location or timeline? And welcome to the dark side that is 7mm regards, Hi Mark, the new layout will stay set around Bolton/Leigh circa 1979, but with only 12'x2' the track plan will be mega simple, just one point and maybe three tracks leading under an overbridge, I'm thinking the headshunt to some exchange sidings to one of the many collieries that used to exist around here. A healthy dose of "it's grim up north" a back street complete with chip shop or even Bury Black Pudding shop, a signing on point, some overgrowth, a car park complete with BL allegro, marina and princess and that ought to do it. Traction wise an 08, a 25 and a 40, together with a dozen coal wagons and a couple of brake vans should keep me busy for a fair few months and keep the bank balence in the red! marsa69
Hi Paul, Bolton? Leigh? Good man I mentioned it before in your original Over Hulton thread I think, when you said about building a new layout, but what about the old Metalbox site at Westhoughton? headshunt? check! sidings? check! mainline in the foreground? check! I've sent you a message anyway and I will be following this most carefully, regards,
gronk the shunter
Apologies for making this more of a work bench thread than a layout one at the moment - but a layout will, I promise materialise in the not too distant future. Meanwhile more rusting on the hopper. I've been trying to add some texture to the rust, which is ground cinnamon, the only thing I had that didn't disolve! Still it smells nice, though I have an inexplicable desire for apple pie now! The close up as usual does it no favours, from 12" away it looks quite ok I think, just the other three sides to do! edcayton
As someone who has always been tempted, can I ask why the Peco O gauge wagon kits don't seem to get a mention from anyone these days? Ed

Western Star
Your photo of the "hopper with grot" is a masterful rendition of what was out there, I am sure than many of us would be most pleased to achieve a result as good as your finish. I particularly like the "new" panels along the top and the suggestion of a weld line - please show us what you have done for the inside of that part of the model. If I might be so bold, the TOPS panel looks a tad bright for the otherwise run-down appearance of the hopper. regards, Graham Beare
marsa69
the TOPS panel looks a tad bright for the otherwise run-down appearance I thought that at first as well but it could be a case that the old ones were so worn out the depot staff gave the wagon a new set

gronk the shunter
You're both right about the data panel guys I'll tone it down when I've finished the other side. Thanks for the positives about the hopper so far, feedback is very much appreciated!
