Well that was a marathon!  I've not done full lining on a passenger tank before, there's an awful lot of it.

It still need varnishing which hopefully will seal in all the visible bits of carrier film etc, or I guess that's inevitable with HMRS Pressfix transfers.  It looks a bit flaky in places at the mo, but that's a lot less obvious at normal viewing distances.

Nice work Dave.

Neat and tidy and a lovely prototype to boot.

Cheers,

Have now varnished the lining and it looks a lot better.  My recipe with Humbrol varnish tins was two-parts Satin, mixed with one-part Gloss.  This matched the finish of the Halfords satin-black that the loco is painted with.  I'm not keen on varnishing the whole loco, having heard so many horror stories of failure.

Cheers, Dave.

I've just noticed that most O2s in BR days, have a can standing on the right-hand sandbox below the lubricator, presumably to catch leaking oil.

I hadn't noticed this because for some strange reason, the vast majority of photos I have show the left hand side of the loco.

Dave - do you brush on the varnish? Presumably if you aren't covering the whole in one go?

R

Yes, mixed up in a saucer and applied just to the transfers with a very small brush.  Seals them in and takes the shine off.

I don't like varnishing the whole loco, too much potential for disaster, and I like the finish of the paint itself.

Cheers, Dave.

Well, it seems to be all over bar the shouting, final assembly is at last in progress.

Here are some photos showing the cab detail, and I've just realised I haven't fitted a regulator handle...

And a few of the loco on the workbench.  Couplings yet to be fitted and I am awaiting a smokebox numberplate

Superb. I really like your attention to detail on the different surfaces and finishes. If only it had a regulator handle: it looks like you could drive it away!

Beautiful model of a very attractive loco - it's been a real pleasure to follow your progress through to completion. Thanks very much for sharing the build process with us - inspirational.

David

Thanks very much for all the "likes" and compliments gents, it now HAS a regulator handle.

Cheers, Dave.

I said we had a regulator at last.

As for the loco, its pretty much finished.  Needs its smokebox numberplate, perhaps a bit more dirt on the bufferbeam, a touch of weathering around the clack-valves, etc, etc.

Those Romford screw-link couplings look a tad overscale, but they are functional.

Hi Dave,

Just popped in to see what's next. lovely loco builds, I like following your thread, I've been with it from the very beginning.

Any ideas what will be the next project?

Best regards for Christmas,

Phil

Thanks Phil,

Been up to my eyes in Builders, decorating etc recently, with loads of stuff stacked in the workshop area.

The end is in sight however; and there's several loco builds getting lined up, including some for myself!

All the best,

Dave.

Good man Dave, I've been through that too this summer.

Total re-plumb & new central heating, plus new bathroom.

My workshops full of stuff too; 30 years of 'that'll come in useful' collection. Well now it's going so I can build my railway and locos to run on it.

I built many for other people in the 1990's and not one to keep, so I can appreciate how you feel.

Best wishes,

Phil.

I have to say that your work on these loco's is very commendable. I have built 2 PDK Adams radial kits and am also working on an A12

.

If you don't mind me asking but am interested to know what and where the plug and sockets are available from, the ones to carry power from loco to tender.

I was looking out for a similar thing to the Hornby type have but cant seem to find any that small.

Thanks, Colin

Thanks very much Colin.  I really enjoy building these kits, even though most of them are not for myself.

I would be interested to hear about your kit-building experiences, do you have a Workshop thread running anywhere?  I am still keen to have a go at a Radial kit, even though they are now coming out RTR.

The plugs & sockets I use are PCB Connectors from Maplin, the sort that come in long strips for you you to cut off as many as you need at once.

Strip of 36 plugs for £1.54   http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/254mm-pin-strip-jw59p

Corresponding socket strip for £1.44   http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/modular-connector-32-socket-strip-dc17t

Highly recommended.

This thread should be creaking into life again shortly, the loco-builds are starting to queue up!

Happy New Year,

Dave.

Thanks Phil,

Glad to hear you will be Up & Running soon, will you be describing things on the Forum?

All the best,

Dave.

Hi Dave.

Thanks for the info on the plugs and sockets that's been a great help.

I haven't got a workshop blog but perhaps when i start the Adams A12 i could do a blog of my own.

The Adams radial is a very nice kit to build, it was the first kit i had ever built, Thoroughly enjoyed it and learn't a lot as it was a steep learning curve for me.

The only issue i had is that it wouldn't go round a 3' curve (it's a long loco) I had to actually build a radial system for the rear axle, just like the rear thing. it's like a sliding bogie within the main frames just to get that bit extra movement......see photo attached

Have a good New Year.

I will be shortly cranking this thread into action again.

The first job is a half-built E1/R class from an SEF whitemetal kit.  I've done a bit of work already, so photos will follow soon.

Cheers, Dave.

I've been threatening to get this thread going again, and here it goes.

I part-built this South Eastern Finecast E1/R some years ago, and its come back to me to finish.

The chassis I described earlier in the thread, but basically its the kit chassis with Romford wheels, Mashima & Highlevel drive, and Backscratcher pickups.  I substituted some much better Alan Gibson coupling rods for the rather basic ones on the chassis etch.

Generally speaking the body castings are very good; the cab/bunker and tankside only needed the edges tidying and a bit of squaring up before they could all be soldered to the footplate.

However as is often the case with whitemetal, the boiler/smokebox casting was somewhat dimensionally-challenged (shrunk) on the underside, to the extent that the saddle didn't touch the footplate.

I've built it all up with extra bits of whitemetal araldited in place and then filed to shape.  After this treatment a new brass smokebox wrapper will be needed, but I was going to do this anyway as there's no rivet detail on the casting.
