Hi,

Would anyone out there know of any of the numbers of the latter series of Class 25's, that ran with Tops numbers prior to being re-painted in Corporate Blue ? Any photos would be great.

If you mean the two-tone green variety, then these are confirmed green/TOPS;

25102, 25202, 25203, 25248, 25251, 25252, 25260, 25261, 25276, 25278, 25294, 25305.

There are other "possibles", but I won't complicate things with those...............

The only photo I took personally of any of these, is THIS one;

'tho I saw most of the rest of them.

Is it a fair statement to say that all the above TOPS two tone green 25's would have had full yellow ends, or did any escape the attentions of a yellow paint brush before getting TOPS numbers?

A fair statement yes - none received TOPS numbers in Gsyp livery (unfortunately) but 7600 got very close - I've seen a photo of it at Crewe with 25250 written in chalk on the cabside!

Bear in mind that 25261 was one of those fitted with tablet catcher recesses in the drivers' cabsides so the numbers were applied to the opposite ends.

It's a pity that 7564 didn't achieve TOPS in green as 25214, a two-tone green one with central double-arrow logos would have been irresistible! However it appears to have been very short-lived, within 1973 and went blue before TOPS.

Thanks. I think my O gauge class 25 will go two tone green FYE, as 25278. I'd always sort of assumed I'd paint it blue, as that's how I remember them in the 1980’s, but I rather like odd liveries, and GFYE seems sort of like a livery that was not "meant to be."

So did 214 carry GFYE with arrows, numbered as 7564?

Yes, although there appears to be only one photo dated 28/7/73 which can be found in the Strathwood albums 'Looking Back at Sulzer Locomotives' and 'Looking Back at Class 24 & 25 Locomotives'. It's shown paired with Gfye D7563 and fortunately was the lead loco otherwise it would have been mostly under a bridge! 7564's numbers are in the later style and the central logo is high up on the Sherwood Green band. However the loco's side displays a mass of touching-in which reminds me of what used to be called 'crazy paving' (I may be showing my age there!) and since there's no record of it reaching TOPS green it looks like it had been prepared for a repaint into blue but for some reason briefly went back into traffic - but that doesn't explain the application of the logos!

This is my opinion, it would be interesting to learn of earlier sightings from those who were lineside in the early 1970s.......

The 'Looking Back at Class 24 & 25 Locomotives' album is a must-have for Rat fans, just about every livery variation including one spread showing green 25260, 25252 + 25261 & 25102.

Thanks. 278 I have memories of, doing a Cambrian turn in 1984, with its BY sticker, and would have been a local one for me in the early 80's when CW based, so I'll stick with that. Would be nice if the NYMR would paint it GFYE TOPS, but I won't hold my breath!
