Leander
concrete sleepers have been laid at the station Been past tonight and pulled into the car park to see progress. As Mike wrote, the concrete sleepers are now laid and the buffer stop on the 'down' side has been moved to the south end of platform 2 adjacent to the Snitterton Road overbridge. There's a red flashing light where the buffer stop has been removed. I'll wander down in the next day or so and, hopefully, get some photos.

RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted May 24, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 24, 2011 Peak Rail isn't actually in the Peak Park yet, and won't be until they first reach Rowsley (a likely scenario) and then progress to the north of the A6. On the subject of Haddon Hall owned by the Manners family. The family was very anti-railway in the nineteenth century, hence the cut & cover tunnel to avoid spoiling the view. Maybe their views haven't changed a great deal with the passing generations. Went for a bike ride round Bakewell - Haddon today. To judge be the signs and fences the only people the family want near Haddon Hall are those who pay to come through the front gate. Also to get to Buxton they need to deal with High Peak Borough Council. They make NR look like kids when it comes to not getting anything done. Michael Delamar
apparentley, contractors will be at working at the station every night this week from 10pm. ive seen some pics of the track in, with just pandrol clips and ballast to do then work on the platform raising. Leander
Finally got round to seeing progress at the station this afternoon. Starting with the re-located buffer stop at the end of the Down platform (Platform 2)
Edwin_m
The third photo belongs in the thread on Swiss engineering! Did they thread the rail through the sign before attaching to the sleepers, or remove the sign and put it back in the same position once they had laid the track? Good to see some progress on this project - after Wirksworth and this one I should think the 153 on the branch will be packed out with gricers! Michael Delamar
thats classed as a nr signal and so needs specialist removal. seems mad I know, sleepers where laid first indiviually. I would have thought they would have run the track under the bridge a little further to allow for any train that overshoots or for double headded trains. thanks for the really good clear photos please keep them coming, there should be work all this week. Leander
Thanks for your kind comments about the photos Mike, they should be clear at that resolution! The platform surface has 'scrubbed up' amazingly well. There were small trees growing out of it a couple of days before.
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted May 25, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 25, 2011 Thanks for your kind comments about the photos Mike, they should be clear at that resolution! The platform surface has 'scrubbed up' amazingly well. There were small trees growing out of it a couple of days before. Nice, helpful, pics. I'm amazed at the change in the platform surface - although obviously much still to do on it they really have been having a go. It seems that a spot of obstructiveness (or do they want the money first?) is going on with NR not resiting that STOP board but then it does mean convening a Signal Sighting Committee etc so perhaps they haven't had time yet
Michael Delamar
seems a shame that scrubbed up platform wont be kept. well thats as far as Ive heard, the platform is to be raised, its too low and has to be modern standard etc. I would imagine that they will build a layer/wall on the platform edge to the height and fill the platform with material, , in the same way as the new platform at east grinstead was built Ive also heard they will cut away some of the platform at the bufferstop end in the spot where the loco and first coach will stop so that the crew can get down and uncouple without going getting out on to the other line, dont know if I like that idea, seems a bit extreme, can jump down from a normal platform height. but we will see what they do. just glad its being done. That actually seems like quite a sensible idea and could well avoid them coming up against a major personnel safety issue with NR and HMRI (but I wonder if they've submitted the risk assessment yet - they hadn't last week according to info). Michael Delamar
I was thinking more along the lines of if they have double headers, say 2 large diesels and the problem of stopping in the exact spot,

Michael Delamar
similar situation at the Spa Valley railway at Eridge http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jalBslismzQ&feature=related
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted May 26, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 26, 2011 similar situation at the Spa Valley railway at Eridge It all depends on how their folk are qualified in the relevant Rules and personal safety stuff (actually the subject of something of a debate in preservation circles at present). As far as running double-headers etc at Matlock is concerned the simple answer is that if they do they are going to finish up with a very short train unless they have risk assessed and have suitable arrangements in place for dealing with a train which is longer than the station platform - HMRI do not like it (sensibly so in my view) but you can get round that to some extent in the manner I have described. IanB47306
I'd assume if they run double headers they will remove the leading loco at Matlock Riverside (if there is the relevant signalling to allow that). Does anybody know how long is the down platform at Matlock is? To me it still looks like they will have to run fairly short trains unless they can arrange for the track to be lengthened in the future.
Michael Delamar
counting the 60ft lengths of rail I would think they should just be able to run 6 with a loco which is what they normally do.
craigwelsh
They lock coaches out of use on the existing train anyway when I was there and some doors on the other coaches were locked as they opened onto low parts of ramps too..

I never thought to count rail lengths. A 6 coach train sounds reasonable though so hopefully they won't have any issues with capacity.
great central
Ballast in place yesterday, looks like it needs tamping though, need to get the stop board moved first?
Michael Delamar
pics Ive seen look like the track has been tamped and a plastic fence is set up along the track so they can work on the platform without affecting NR trains and work on the platfom in daylight. from what Ive heard work on the platform is due to start tommorrow if it hasnt already. hopefully someone will post some pics here soon meantime, nice classic view.. http://www.derbysulz...29matlockbw.jpg
