Hi all,

NSE, Network Southeast seems pretty popular with some RMwebbers so I though as I have a few pics of trains in the old red white and blue livery I would post a few.

Feel free to add your own. The only rule is the pic must have a Loco or coach in the NSE livery in view.:D

Cheers Peter.

Seems strange to be getting all dewy eyed about the NSE period, I never liked the liveries at the time but am glad I took the photos!

Nice pics Nidge, and more in focus than mine. I wasn't a fan of the livery when it first came out, seem to remember hearing the word rancid a fair bit. Living on the Bournemouth Southampton line I was seeing it everyday so it sort of grew on me.

Cheers Peter.

Thanks Peter. I remember taking dozens of shots of 50s at the time, I'd lost interest in the railway for about four years then got back into it when my brother showed me a photo of 50 017 in the early NSE livery. I wasn't impressed, (much prefer the plain blue and large logo styles) but knew the 50s wouldn't be around for much longer so bagged all I could.

Reminds me - I must scan the other photos some time!

The early version was prone to fading. About 1990 they replaced it with darker shades of blue and red which lasted better. This was also the time they changed from the angled upsweep at the cab ends to the curved one.

Sectorisation was "my" era so I have a strong soft spot for it. I agree that it looked better on multiple units than locos.

I never liked this livery either - still don't. It faded horribly too.

It didn't do locos any favours with regards to looks although it didn't look too bad on GE EMU's.

Best, Pete.

IIRC given that most of NSE's flet consisted of EMU's / DMU's (and with the remaining loco haulled routes already being lined up for replacement by further DMU's) the NSE livery was actually designed around multiple units rather than locos. Hence the later change which did away with the upswings on locos as an atempt to make the livery look 'neater'

I have far too many photos of locos (mainly Class 50s) in NSE but I did think I'd show you all this one for a bit of interest.

Note the lack of nameplate.
