Preservation Modeller
2 years ago I started my own model railway at my club, working only the two meeting nights a week from 7:30 to 10/10:30. I am VERY pleased with the result so far and have already had an exhibition invite from the Tring And District society in Berkhapmsted for the 10th October, along with a few possibles for next year too. Still got the backscenes to work on, but apart from that, I am very pleased with myself. If anyone knows exhibition managers who may be interested, please let me know, although due to "Dad's Taxi" I cannot garruntea a long distance journey. Do suggest either way, I can only say no at worst. Day Out With Thomas Is A Regular Event Packed Sheds A look across the yard Pannier Arrives Ready for a day Visiting Ivatt CAVALCADE!!! I Spy Trevor The Traction Engine (Caroline is elsewhere too.) Dean Goods arrives More engines on shed The tram... The praire... And the static displays and shunters. Crab in the headshunt The public bus emerges from the bridge And a small shunter is taken away to another railway The Scotsman Arrives Awaits a run round And the man in the shops waits for buisness to pick up Well, I had a great time, CLive and Dad (or so they tell me) had a great time and Carole, Mum, Clive and all got me a new wagon as a well done. Bluebell Model Railway
Looking a great layout, was going to attend the exhibition you were at but sadly couldn't make it due to some transport difficaulty, but look s like you done a fab job and well done you and your team for getting it to exhibition
Brush47337
Great stuff - thanks for sharing this with us. I have been to quite a few exhibitions now (I am not 16). I think your layout would be a star turn at every one. Nice mix of "fun for the kids" + loads of good details and cameos and you have a well detailed life like layout as well. Blending watchability (made that word up I think) and serious in our hobby is to be encouraged in my view. Thanks Stuart
Preservation Modeller
Had the layout out briefly for some new images which are now in my gallery The platform has "warped" slightly so that needs seeing too when the weather's better... Dudley Dodger
Isn't it a Hughes Crab? Or is that the model of which you speak? Anyway. Foolish boy! *Slap* You don't use the actual type of engine for a day out with thomas. You just glue faces onto any loco you have spare!
lost track
Great pictures, I enjoyed browsing through them, thanks for sharing them regards, Shaun
60B
Isn't it a Hughes Crab? Or is that the model of which you speak? Horwich was where the class was built. So Hughes or Horwich Crab is correct. Anyway. Foolish boy! *Slap* You don't use the actual type of engine for a day out with thomas. You just glue faces onto any loco you have spare! Garethp8873
You don't see many preservation themed layouts in my opinion. It is a very good layout. I like the idea of using the Thomas models as it will hopefully interest the young viewers into going into the modelling scenario themselves.
Preservation Modeller
It was good fun at the exhibition with the Thomas Models- grabbed all the kids' attentions and soon had requests coming in for which ones to appear! I did consider doing the faces to engines TBH- I tried my hand at casting some different emotioned ones a while back for the models, so I could give it a go
Bluebell Model Railway
Always a good plan to have thomas the tank and friends on a layout definatly a crowd puller... oor the kids anyway, its nice to see you young guys with your layout you have built exhibiting, something I always wanted to do. I hope you get some bookings for 2010!

Preservation Modeller
Haven't been able to update this thread for a while as nothing really happened over winter. However, recently things have looked up: Exhibition bookins have gone to 3 this year: Northampton And District Exhibition on the 24th July, Shenfield/ Mid Essex railway club exhibition 19th September and Shoeburyness Club Exhibition 20th and 21st November. Basildon did invite me too, but I am unable to take the layout there as I am already helping with my club who are attending, but will hopefully be there next year though. As for layout work, the station platform has had a surface revamp. Originally made of card, this warped beyong belief so I have repalced it all with plaster: And while working on the board, also weathered up the trackbed In other news, I DID have a City of Truro Dapol kit, but unfortunatly while shunting it round a loop, the wheels locked and the rods broke... so am looking for a motor chasis for it, or replacement parts... As for other engines, I now have a J94, 2 pullmans and another 2 on order... The tram engine is having its paintwork done up and the motor is finally back in it, after falling out last October! The praire with the bad paint is having the touched up too, maybe I'll put it into GWR livery if I can get the transfers...... Don't forget to keep an eye on my site: http://stepneydownlayout.webs.com for exhibition information, layout updates and alike, or, http://stepneydownstation.webs.com for my ficitional railway site I like playing about! That's all for now, but hopefully new pictures will follow within the next week, weather permitting....
SNCF stephen
I have enjoyed reading about this layout. I hope the new platforms prove to be successful. Do you mind if I ask about the warping of the platforms? Its just I was considering using card in my next project and if it is a major problem then it might be something I avoid. At some point in the future I might try and incorporate a small preserved railway into a layout. I have always liked the idea of being able to run a large variety of trains and also the idea that almost anything can go on in terms of rolling stock movements at these kind of lines. Keep up the good work. Stephen
Preservation Modeller
It really depends on where your layout will be stored. Mine is kept collapsed in the shed, where conditions could have affected it, in which I case I'd say definately not if you keep it in your own shed. Otherwise, it should be fine. Thanks for the comment Owen
Bluebell Model Railway
The layout is looking much better from its face lift, alot more refreshed, as Owen says layouts in sheds are at risk to the eliments out there the temperature changes will effect it not only surfaces, wood, but also the track. Im lucky that i haven't had any of these issues as of yet but i do expect it when a shed isn't properly insulated. Good job though Owen and hope it re-appears at the exhibitions soon! Preservation Modeller
Thanks Matt Well, I had the layout up for a bit today and got some work done: Firstly, for the website (when WEBS have sorted out their damn editing troubles) a re-construction of the j94 loco being moved for overhaul: The Crab (currently without its front coupling after the loco was dismantled for repairs) brings in the heavy duty crane Passing 1015 awaiting the move The J94 is cabled up And hoisted up Then finally placed on the flatbed 1015 Then takes it away Loco News: The 4f with the badge and number The Tram's Repaint And finally layout news: The platform surface done, so on goes the fencing: That's it for the moment, but hopefully friday will see some running and all
