Next batch of Class 70's

Recommended Posts

Re the thread title - can I assume that there will not be any further batches of Class 70 locomotives?

I wouldn't rule anything out in the industry today regarding traction, but with the majority of the green fleet parked up at Midland Road, Freightliner are unlikely to have any more

With Colas class 56s currently otherwise engaged on RHTT duties, the Lindsey Oil Refinery/Preston Docks bitumen tanks 6M32/6E32 is, for now at least, a regular class 70 working.

Class pioneer for Colas 70801 passes Thornhill LNW Junction at Ravensthorpe with 6E32, 08,55 Colas Ribble Rail to Lindsey, on 8th October 2018.

Hi did this working pass through Wakefield Kirk gate as I caught a glimpse of it near the station but wasn't sure of the loco?

A break from the more regular single or double-headed Colas 56 on todays Lindsey Oil Refinery to Preston Docks bitumen tanks 6M32/6E32, with 70805 passing through Brighouse on the return working.

The letters and numbers are retro reflective so can look silver in the right light (or under a camera flash)

Seems to be common in the US with reflective markers along the side of freight stock as well

Reflective markers make a lot of sense when you have unprotected level crossings and very long trains. The locomotive with its loud horn can be a long way away by the time you arrive at the crossing to find the back end of the train still passing.

A lot of US loco numbers have reflective tape round the edges of the numerals. They really do show up in poor light.  I know that UP does this but can't be sure about other roads.

Jamie

All North American locos and rolling stock have reflective tape and markings on them, which is mandated by the DoT to make them more visible at grade crossings.
