Next batch of Class 70's

Slightly :offtopic: for a moment but on a General Electric theme, Ive seen a fair few fire damaged GE machines over the years, but it looks like this one http://www.railpictures.net/photo/462852

was a real big fire! :O

This particular 4400HP  loco was 3 years old in March 2013.

GE's aren't known as 'toasters' in the US for nothing!

Perhaps I've been at the back of the class here, but why is there such a gap in numbering ie 70/0 and 70/8?

Regards

The other 70xx1 series are used by other stock, e.g 70101, 70301 &70501 are on a 377/6 emu. I think 70801 was the first available (and it ties in with Colas' 66/8 theme)

Cheers,

Mick

There is already somone on another forum asking which route the colas 70s will take out of the docks!

The latest frothing on one North-west based gen list refers to photography and how to obtain the best/first shots of the imports.

There are warnings about the unsuitability of the dock area due to security issues and public areas may have potential problems with the locals.......... Although I'm sure that Mr Beast has the odd anecdote or two about them! :O

BTW, the Atlantic Concert, currently at Baltimore docks is the favoured vessel to bring the first two - reported to be 70803/70805.

Cheers,

Mick

I can confirm that the car numbers of the new five car Class 377/6 series has taken up numbers 70101, 70201, 70301, 70401 and 70501 through to 70126, 70226, 70326, 70426 and 70526.

The Class 377/7's are going to take the 706xx and 707xx series out as well!!  Just as well Colas prefer /8 numbers for their machines...

There really is little logic applied these days, I am still pondering why the Class 171's start at 1717xx when surely 171001 would have been far more logical.

Let us hope 8 is a lucky number for them .

Often, the reason is to prevent duplication of the last three numbers.

For example; 156's start at 401, 158's at 701, because 001 was used by the 150/0, 101 and 201 by 150/1 and 150/2, 153's are 301, 156 are 401/501 (601 is missing), 701/801/901 are 158's. (It also made sense as the coach numbers usually tallied with the set number  - 156401 is 52401/57401)

IIRC Voyagers were to be 220001 and 221001, but the 221's were eventually numbered 221101 and up.

Dunno if that applies to your 1717xx though.

It used to be a right PITA when spotting in Birmingham - 001 in my book could be a 304 or a 310!

Cheers,

Mick

The 171 thing is correct, the 170's automatically took the 1/2/3/4/5/6 series, so the 171's took 7 and 8, not forgetting of course that initially the 171's were initially 170's before the coupler and minor electrical changes. The 172's have kind of followed in this respect, ie even though the LM ones use the 2xx/3xx number series, they don't share the last two digits with the 170's of the same number series, the LO 172's are numbered in the 0xx series which isn't used by 170's (albeit though used by the original 168 batch) and there are only 4 172/1's which share the same last 3 digits as 170's. I am surprised they didn't number the 172/1's as 172121-124 for instance, considering they went to the same effort to avoid duplicating numbers in the LM batch with 170's.  :scratchhead:

I wondered if anyone has any shipping information on these new Colas Class 70 locos......I would have thought they must be in the vicinity of a US port by now.

Wondered if it will be via the roll on roll off shipping method to say Liverpool........or by the dropping crane method at Newport.??

According to the gen list, 70803/70805 were loaded on board the Atlantic Concert in Baltimore. It's currently in Halifax NS and due Liverpool early in the new year.

Derby Road overbridge (A565) is the first public place after leaving the docks. The area is less than salubrious but it's a busy main road at all times of day. I've never had any problems there, and I'm not aware of anybody else having problems.

Agreed that it's fairly public location and I would bet that there's quite a presence by enthusiasts on the relevant day. TBH, any town or city has it's less than ideal locations and I just think it's someone on the gen group scare mongering.

the stop board for the docks is under the bridge, ive spent many an hour sleeping under it like a troll waiting to be let onto the dockside

I've photographed some dodgy characters down there too !

As Stu says it's very busy and I've never had any trouble BUT it's a city and cameras are attractions, so be wary of anyone showing too much interest, I suspect there will be a load of tourist spotters* on the bridge when they eventually move.

* those who only come out for the rare workings and want the best positions despite arriving 10 seconds before the train is due, and leaving before it's fully passed.
