Lukasz
The 37 wasn't such a success, although I think it's down to the paint job more than anything. Be interesting to see how you get on with yours when you start it. Its definitely a project for the summer as I have a Vi trains and Bachmann 37 to do before I can start with the Lima. Nice to be back on here and see you're still about. cheers, Lukasz
matto21
Based on your New year's resolution Matt, there should be plenty to look forwrad to Well let's hope so, although I am terrible at putting things off so I wouldn't be surprised if some of those projects are still around this time next year! Its definitely a project for the summer as I have a Vi trains and Bachmann 37 to do before I can start with the Lima. Nice to be back on here and see you're still about. cheers, Lukasz Well I'll forward to seeing your progress with all 3 of those then - no pressure or anything! Lukasz
Don't hold your breath. Funds are very low at the moment so 37698 is top priority, looking forward to your projects more than my own. cheers, Lukasz
matto21
Started work on this Lima Class 31 recently. Progress so far has involved removing and replacing moulded detail from the cab fronts and roof. I'm hoping to represent this photo of 31301 or this photo of 31327 [or maybe both as I have another Lima 31 stashed away - see how I get on first!]
James
Now that is looking very good indeed! I love how regular an appearance you have with the grab handles on the roof - looks superb!
0121modeller
Extremely nice work so far, I'll be watching this one.
matto21
Now that is looking very good indeed! I love how regular an appearance you have with the grab handles on the roof - looks superb! Thank you James! Once again I've picked up several useful ideas from your excellent Class 31 thread. The grab handles are the result of a bit of trial and error. Had a lot of trouble getting the cab front handrails to fit correctly. Probably spent several hours getting them bent to the correct shape! Extremely nice work so far, I'll be watching this one. Thanks for your comment. Hopefully I'll get the other cab front finished soon and then I can start on the bufferbeams.
matto21
A small update. The 31 now has a new roof grill courtesy of Extreme Etchings and both cab front have been completed. The buffer shown here is from Markits - I can't decide if it is suitable or not. Can anyone advise or suggest a suitable alternative if not?
tomstaf
Hi Matto, It's taking shape nicely. RE the buffers I'd go for replacement ones from Hornby. Either the class 31 or the class 50 types would suit (http://www.hornbyspa...l31-p-2234.html). They're sprung, look good are are pretty cheap for what they are. I'd also recommend the pack with the pipes and ETH fittings. HTH Cheers Tom Edited July 10, 2012 by tomstaf
James
Either the class 31 or the class 50 types would suit (http://www.hornbyspa...l31-p-2234.html). The Class 50 buffers are excellent and what I used on my Class 31 - add Shawplan inspection covers and steps and they're spot on! The Hornby Class 31 (and 56) buffers are rubbish though - they're ill proportioned in the shank and just look weedy to me. The housing detail is better but with the fifty buffers and EE etches the result is better. Best forgotten I'm afraid.
matto21
Thanks chaps, I'll bear the Hornby Class 50 buffers in mind then. Edited July 12, 2012 by matto21
b*ggeredupclass03
Hey Matto, you said back on page 3, I think that on your 24.5 Ton Mineral Wagons, the rust is done with a cocktail stick, a sponge and something else, which I can't remember. Is the same true on your VEA wagons or not? If it isn't, could you explain how you did it please? Thanks, Josh.
matto21
I've made a little bit of progress with the Class 31. Thanks to Tom and James' suggestions, Hornby Class 50 buffers have been obtained and fitted along with some Shawplan backplates - comparing them to the Markits buffers I was going to use, I think the Hornby ones were the right choice so thanks again. The headlights have also now been attached to the cab fronts. Josh, the 'rusting' on the vans was done using liquid mask applied with a piece of sponge...
James
Good stuff! Sometimes I do talk sense - the problem is picking it out among all the rubbish!
matto21
Sorry for posting another photo of a half finished wagon, but this is all I have to show for the last two months of modelling - to get this far is an achievement!
matto21
Spot the difference from the pic above....ok the background colour is different but also the underframe has been painted and weathered. Still needs couplings to complete...
MartinWales
ice work! Do like the subtle rusting effect on the metalwork!
matto21
First post on this thread for the best part of five years! Been working on this Parkside CCT Parcel Van. First time around I made a particularly dodgy job of attaching the solebars to the floor - leaving the axle boxes splayed out on one side. I decided to remove them and use some plastic card to space the solebars equally. Hope you like my bling cutting mat!

matto21
Resurrecting a very old thread. Just wanted to post some pictures of some 16 ton mineral wagons I've been working on. Both are Dapol unpainted RTR bodies and Parkside chassis. Rusting, replating and patched paintwork based on photos from the Bartlett site. Thanks for looking Matt
Malcolm 0-6-0
Those are very well done - the weathering and rust look very realistic.
matto21
Another wagon I'm working on: Parkside Shock wagon. Weathering based on a photo on Mr B's site. Matt
