TWICKENHAM & DISTRICT MRC

Twickenham & District MRC is now well established in its new expanded clubrooms in West London, and so the Club's attention has turned to building new layouts.

T&DMRC are currently (Jan 2011) building new layouts in

OO - Twickenham Junction,

A blending of fact and fiction to build a highly authentic model of the old Twickenham station but updated to 1961 - features 3rd rail electrics/steam and early diesels.

O - Addison Road

A highly ambitious project set in the 1920s/30s. A prototypically correct station that allows all kinds of stock to be run - LNWR, GWR, LBSCR, LSWR, LMS, SR etc

G

A new fully sceniced DCC controlled layout is under construction using PECO G gauge track

N

The Club's existing British N gauge layout ( Batty Moor ) is now well established on the exhibition circuit and is to be featured in Railway Modeller, and so the group are already thinking about a new project - it could well be modular, it may well feature American!

Full details of the club and its layouts can be found at www.tdmrc.org.uk

Just a quick update to say that Twickenham & District MRC has a new website.

It can still be found at  www.tdmrc.org.uk but it's now completely revamped in a new format which will make it far easier to keep up-to-date.

At this stage it seems appropriate to say a big "thank you" to ex-member Chris Chinery who laboured hard and long to set up and maintain our old site.

Living in SW London (and beyond) ... why not come and see us?

As TDMRC are not currently planning any exhibitions of their own the club is always keen to support other events in the area in order to meet prospective new members  .................

The club's next shop window is at the 150th ANNIVERSARY OF HAMPTON RAILWAY STATION on September 13th (10am to 5pm)

The Club and its members will be providing 4 working layouts plus pride of place will go to the club's ambitious new OO project - TWICKENHAM JUNCTION - albeit as a static display although hopefully with appropriate stock for the layout and the period modelled - 1961.

This event will include a REAL steam loco - Adams Radial tank 4-4-2T # 488 from the Bluebell Railway plus other historic rolling stock, stands, stalls etc - altogether a GREAT DAY OUT - why not come and see us?

As we said previously, TDMRC is not planning its own exhibition in the near future but we continue to 'fly the flag' at several local events.

The 'Chertsey Show' is not a model exhibition, but it is a local event that attracts a massive local audience. So we attended to help spread the word about the club in particular and the hobby in general. We had two 'family friendly' layouts plus displays of our more serious work.

These are our 'audience participation' layouts at the Chertsey Show.

And this is our display to promote our more serious projects.

TDMRC's next venture outside the Clubroom is at Hampton Station's 150th Anniversary celebrations on September 7th. The Club and its members will be supplying four (small) working layouts plus a static display from the Club's exciting new OO project Twickenham Junction. There will be other working layouts, stalls and displays including the Adams Radial tank and a coach from the Bluebell Railway ... why not come down and meet us and see what club membership can offer?

Twickenham Junction is an accurate model of the town's original LSWR station as if it had survived into the 1960's. The model has recently been set up in the Clubroom in its entirety for the very first time to allow final tracklaying between the scenic section (Twickenham Junction) and the Club's new OO/HO common fiddle yard.

Here is a photo of the Twickenham Junction team with the layout up for the first time ...

and here is a photo showing the OO/HO common fiddle yard under construction .... once completed, this will allow other scenic fronts to be built in years to come without the need to build a new fiddle yard....

On September 7th 2014 TDMRC supported the 150th Anniversary celebrations at Hampton station ....

Pride of place went to our new OO project TWICKENHAM JUNCTION -  an accurate recreation of the old LSWR station at Twickenham as if it had lasted into the 1960's ..........

In complete contrast to the local family orientated event in Hampton last week ............ this week TDMRC was at RMwebLIVE in Coventry.

The theme of our stand was using new technology to build better layouts ......... this demo/talk was given by members of our ADDISON ROAD  (7mm scale group)

Here is our stand ....

I am beginning to find my way around RMweb now and so have started threads on our various layouts in the appropriate sub-forums ....

The first is our 7mm standard gauge layout ADDISON ROAD; you can find that thread here...

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/91730-addison-road-kensington-olympia-in-7mm/&do=findComment&comment=1647023

The second is our 4mm finescale OO BR(S) 3rd rail electric layout TWICKENHAM JUNCTION ; you can find that here ....

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/91808-twickenham-mrc-builds-large-oo-gauge-sr-3rd-rail-layout/&do=findComment&comment=1649379

The third will (when I get around to starting it) be about our N gauge group and their various projects - watch this space!

A member of RMweb has posted elsewhere about one of our layouts from the 1970s ... luckily we had some details in our club archive, which made us think ..... does anyone out there have any photos of our old layouts that would fit into our archive? Or are you an ex-member who would like to make contact? Or, perhap, most importantly, are you a prospective member? Remember we have layouts in N, N trams, OO, O and G and our running tracks accomodate 14 different gauges - YES 14 !!

So, whether an ex-member or our next member - why not contact us www.tdmrc.org.uk   .... remember we have members in Woking, Staines, Chiswick, Camberley,Barnes, Watford - even Boston (USA)

Twickenham & District MRC are a club with a long history and we love to be reminded of past layouts.

Some time ago someone contacted us about one of our layouts from the 1960's - 'THE MONSTER' - a privately owned TT layout which was a combination of three individually owned layouts....... a sort of early modular layout.

Here is a recently found photo of 'The Monster' probably from the 1960's. The layout was jointly owned by founder members John Christie, Gerry Burt and Joe Hodgson. Whilst the exact date and location of this photo is unknown, it is thought it may have been taken at one of our early exhibitions at All Hallows church hall, Twickenham.

We do know that the layout was shown at least once at a combined length of 100ft .... at the Dorking Halls show.... a well known exhibition in the 1960's/70's.

Thinking of joining TDMRC?

We're closed now until Jan 9th, but why not come and speak to us at the St. Albans show on Jan 10th/11th? We're doing some demos and we're taking our promo stand; members will be on hand to talk about the club and what it has to offer.

Remember we have active members as far afield as Watford, Staines, Woking and even Boston (USA)!  So  wherever you live we could be YOUR local club!!

Twickenham & District MRC's O gauge layout accurately reproducing ADDISON ROAD (now known as Kensington Olympia ) has its own thread on RMweb in the 7mm+ section.

This is by far the club's biggest and most ambitious layout ever with the group learning and developing new skills to tackle building an accurate model of a major prototype as it was in 1923. THe layout has been in development for some years and is probably 12-18 months away from being complete, but that does not stop the AR group taking its 'roadshow' around the country.

The group gave a 30 minute illustrated talk at RMweblive  back in October and now they will be out again on Thursday January 15th at The MRC in Keen House, London. The talk will be a greatly expanded version of their talk at RMweblive and will deal with many of the groundbreaking computer driven techniques the group have used building the layout.

Why not come along and meet the group? All welcome!

It's coming up for the Warners/BRM show in Doncaster this weekend and TDMRC will be taking along our OO layout NORTHWICK - why not come and say 'hello'?

TDMRC caters for all levels of OO modellers ....

1. If you're into serious prototype driven modelling then you'll love our latest OO project - TWICKENHAM JUNCTION - it combines the accurate trackplan and buildings of the real pre-war TWICKENHAM station with 1960s era steam and electric emus. This gives us the best of both worlds - the more interesting pre-war station combined with the 1960s trains that many members remember from childhood. Serious OO modelling with a local twist. This layout should be running in 2016 - why not join the team building it?

2. If your tastes are a little more catholic and/or you want to join a group running an established layout, then it's NORTHWICK for you. The club's current OO flagship has been updated and improved to prolong it's life - available for regular running on club nights.

3. If you're a collector of old model trains or if you just want to run-in your latest purchase/build then we can offer the club's Multi-Gauge-Running-Track - three circuits of OO/HO track plus 12 other gauges! The MGRT is being upgraded in Jan/Feb 2015 to make it easier/quicker to set up, but if this sounds your sort of thing then do come down and see it in action once the works complete.

If you came along (or even if you didn't) the Club is holding a summer BBQ this Friday July 31st to mark AUGUST CLOSE DOWN and as a way of welcoming prospective members to see a more typical club night with just a little extra incentive to come along.

The Club is closed in August to allow the scouts to refurbish the hall (our clubrooms)- so why not come along this Friday (partners welcome!) to enjoy the BBQ and BRING STOCK to run on our Multi-Gauge-Running-Track - all gauges from Z-G!
