I’ve been struggling to find an even and correct lighting kit for mine . I was wondering who’s you used please ? Cheers, Ian Hi Meanach, For the inspection saloons, I've just been using some old decoders plus strips of LEDs that I originally bought for buildings that come in a roll. They're warm white LEDs from Country Scenes. For most coaches, I'm planning to use ESU units though. I have a pack of 6 ready to fit and that will be an upcoming project shortly, so watch this space. Hope that helps! Cheers Dave

Popular Post Waverley West
Hi folks, Well, there have been a few developments on WW over the past week or two, so here is an update of recent comings and goings on the layout. Perhaps the biggest change is the replacement of the old halogen bulbs in the railway room ceiling with new LED versions. These are just 4W compared with the 40W of the old ones and, as there are 15 of them, they will make a big different to my power consumption. But the most important change for my purposes is that they're in the daylight range (6500k), which gives a much more natural and faithful rendering of the colours on the layout. They are straight replacements for the old bulbs, with no electrickery required, and they're a big improvement all round on the old ones. They are also dimmable, which is another plan for the future. At around £3.99 each, they were reasonably priced too. All the photos below were taken under the new lights, so you can judge for yourselves. The next development is the arrival of one of Hornby's new J36s - "Maude". The prototype loco was often used on local railtours out from Waverley in the 80s, and so is an ideal addition to WW's railtour fleet. This lovely little loco is just about able to haul four Bachmann Mk 1s around the layout, which is all I wanted it to do. It's fitted with TTS sound too, which sounds pretty good to my ears. It goes chuff-chuff anyway, like all steam locos do, unlike those diesels which all sound so different (apologies to all those with an inclination towards steam, I just couldn't resist that one ). Seriously though, I was impressed by the sound, especially for the price. Next up is the near-completion of the InterCity-liveried inspection saloon. i thought it was finished but then I took some photos of it and realised I hadn't painted the ETS jumpers and cables. Doh! Here are some shots of it, fitted with DCC-controlled lighting using an old Lenz decoder dating from my pre-sound days... Finally, here are some general shots of the layout taken under the new lights. This one in particular I think shows off the daylight characteristics of the light. If you compare it with some old photos taken under the halogen lights, the difference really becomes apparent. Hope to be back soon with another update. I'm still missing my DSLR but hopefully a replacement will be purchased soon. We've just paid off a chunk of the mortgage and there's no money left for such luxuries right now. That's all for now. Happy modelling, folks! Cheers Dave Edited April 3, 2019 by Waverley West Corrected typos 39
lmsforever
The new lighting makes a very big difference and I look forward to more photos ,Maude looks very nice, back in the late seventies I went on a railtour to Edinburgh. We boarded a coach and went to the back of beyond to a shed and saw Maude in the flesh plus a couple of wagons. Then we stopped at the Forth Bridge for a coffee and at the drivers suggestion bought tins of shortbread at excellernt prices turned out the café was owned by his sister! All in all a good if long day out and thought Edinburgh a lovely city.

The pick up issue on Bachmann mk1 & 2 is a stumbling block and I can’t stand flickering lighting. I’ve tried the Digikeijs kit with in built decoder and stay alive . Whilst the programmable decoder is excellent and the stay alive works , the pick ups are not suitable for Bachmann coaches. Another problem is that they only come in warm white which is way too white for B.R stock c 1988.
Waverley West
Hi folks, Just a quick pit stop update and an excuse to post another video. I managed to do a bit more on the new fiddle yard extension for push-pull trains today. More on that to follow. The Freightliner container train also progressed, so I hope to be back soon with another update on that and a few piccies. In the meantime, here are some more comings and goings on Waverley West, including some footage of the new J36, which has so far escaped its call to the weathering works, but it will soon be taken out of service for detailing, light weathering and the fitting of coal in the tender and a crew, Hope to be back soon. Once I was happy with the result, I pasted them onto a sky backscene. It's not perfect but it is a reasonably accurate representation of Princes St., particularly the National Gallery, Jenner's and, of course, the Scott Monument. Popular Post Waverley West
Hi folks, A quick video of 47714 departing Platform 17 with a scratch set of Mk 2fs and a DBSO bound for Queen St. Must have been the late 80s judging by the rag-bag mix of liveries. Maude can be seen on the far right, still working local rail excursions. The big news here is that I've ordered a new DSLR, which should arrive over the next couple of weeks or so. I'm really looking forward to getting my mitts on that. In other news, I've been making good progress on the container train. Initial weathering of the containers has been completed on most of the containers (mainly involving toning down the bright colours with a pale wash). Rust and other patching/weathering will be applied next. Fitting of the container catches on the flats themselves and the associated detail parts is taking an age, but I'm now hopefully within one more evening in front of the telly of completing them! Hope to be back soon with another update. Cheers for now, Dave 19
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted April 23, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 23, 2019 I dunno, going back in time, filming a video of the real thing and then trying to pass it off as your model... It's outrageous, I shall write to my MP about it, see if I don't! Al.
Popular Post Waverley West
First couple of shots with my new camera, taken while trespassing on the line in Princes St. Gardens... In other news, the container flat wagons are now almost complete, with just rewheeling to do. Then it's on to finishing off the containers themselves, which are already in progress. Cheers for now, Dave
Popular Post Waverley West
Hi folks, Just thought I'd post a few pics of the developing Freightliner rake. The first two wagons are now finished, along with the first two containers. These are the original Freightliner containers, suitably weathered for the late 70s/early 80s. The remaining containers are later. Here is 25083 in charge of the first two wagons passing through Princes St Gardens... Plus a few close-up shots of the wagons themselves... With just re-wheeling of the wagons remaining now, work is now progressing on the rest of the containers, including fading, rusting and patch painting. Hope to be back soon with some pics of the containers. Happy modelling! Cheers for now, Dave Edited April 26, 2019 by Waverley West

Popular Post Waverley West
Hi folks, Just another quick update, as work is progressing on the Freightliner rake. The rake has now been tested empty and runs well, without no derailments anywhere on the layout. Work has now moved on to finishing off the containers. Five of the BR type have now been completed along with a couple of private owner ones. The containers will now be added to the rake as they are completed. Here is 47459 crossing the viaduct with the rake. The container shown is an ex-Evergreen container which has had its lettering removed and been faded/patch-painted. I may well add some rust around the corners in particular at some point, but I just wanted to run it for now. Here is a close-up of one of the grimy/oily finished wagons... Here is a very poor close-up of the ex-Evergreen container passing through Princes St. Gardens... Cheers for now, Dave 25
Popular Post Waverley West
Speed anyone...? I think this type of shot would come out better in good natural light, rather than under artificial light as in the above photos. I was very pleased with my first experiments with the new camera though. Happy modelling! Cheers Dave 32

Waverley West
Yep, it's a bit of a hit and miss affair, combined with experimentation with train vs shutter speed!
GordonC
Would daylight colour range bulbs help you with those pictures then if you think the artificial light is affecting them?

I've already fitted LED daylight bulbs and they've made a huge improvement (not to mention cut my electricity consumption by 90 percent) ... but you still can't beat actual daylight, in my book anyway.

Flood
Great photos as always Dave. I don't get to look through your thread that often but you always keep the bar nice and high and I make sure that I try to match your standards when making stock for Kirkhill. 4
