Popular Post Waverley West
Hi folks Not too much happening at WW at the moment, although another Bachmann 47 has been released from WW's Works in the shape of Railfreight 47018. This is a reworked Bachmann 47050, involving renumbering, addition of the black window surrounds and replacement of the white cantrail stripe with the organge version. Other than that it was just a case of the usual WW additions, including buffer beam detail, a replacement driver and weathering (on top of Bachmann's dusting of bodyside dirt). 47018 was a Scottish loco from 83-88, spending time at both Haymarket and Eastfield, so it seemed an ideal candidate for WW. Another Bachmann 47, Railfreight Distribution 47365 is also almost complete. Both 47s are awaiting sound chips from Legomanbiffo before they can run on the layout. Biffo's latest 47 is the best 47 sound chip so far in my humble opinion, and I've decided to standardise on Biffo sound chips and Bachmann 47s as my standard class 47 for Waverley West. I've been selling off some of my old Heljan ones in order to fund the switch to the new Biffo chips. A few old favourites may well linger on though, as they are still very nice locos. In other news, I have now completed additions to each of the west and east fiddle yards, with 4 dead-end sidings on the eastern FY for HST services to London and the south, and 5 on the western FY for push-pull and HST services to Glasgow and the north. These will be used for HSTs and my push-pull rakes and will free up other sidings for the growing number of freight rakes on the layout and also make operation simpler. Here are a few sneak preview shots of 018... Hope to be back with some more pics of 47018 and 47365. Cheers for now, Dave Edited July 2, 2019 by Waverley West Extra photo added 21

Popular Post Waverley West
Hi folks, Here as promised are some more shots of the latest two locos to be released from WW Works... Railfreight 47018 and Railfreight Distribution 47365. First up are some sunny shots of 47018. I realised when taking these shots that one of the bodyside windows was missing. Some frantic minutes of panic and scrabbling round on the floor later and fortunately it turned up on the carpet. Phew. Followed by the other newcomer, 47365. I had a bit of a disaster with this one, as Bachmann's latest printing techniques mean that numbers, logos, etc. come off far too easily now when in contact with enamel thinners, and I managed to strip the "Railfreight Distribution" off both sides of the loco. These were replaced with Railtec transfers. I then had another disaster attempting to spray the loco with satin varnish in order to protect the lettering and logos. Result: a lot more hassle than was strictly necessary, but I don't think the scare is too apparent fortunately. I always thought this was a pretty smart livery on the 47s. 47365 is finished in near ex-works condition. I couldn't quite bring myself to make it fresh out of the box, so the roof has the beginnings of a slight covering of grime and the bogies are not gloss. As for my next projects, well, I think continuing the refresh of the 47 fleet is pretty high on the agenda, along with fitting interior lights to one of my HST rakes using ESU lighting units and DCC Concepts wheels. Happy modelling! Cheers for now, Dave Edited July 3, 2019 by Waverley West 27 1

Thanks for pointing it out. I did think it was too good to be true when I found an RF-liveried Haymarket-based 47! Boiler ports don't bother me too much I have to say, but the battery boxes underneath are a bit more obvious and I didn't notice those for some reason. It may well get a renumber at some point. Easy enough to do. There are plenty of other things to get on with though as work to update WW's fleet of Bachmann 47s with new sound chips continues. 15 old sound chips sold, 11 new ones purchased, and 7 fitted so far. I will probably dispose of a few more old Heljan 47s too (only one sold so far). I do like Legomanbiffo's latest incarnation of the 47, especially the "drive lock" function. All the thrash you could wish for without the loco shooting off round the layout! Cheers Dave 1

I've done that a few times and it's easy enough as the switches will fit in the battery boxes. I'm not sure I have any of that type of tank left in the spares box though, as I used them all up doing my 47/4s.
Lowlander
Hi Dave If I remember correctly the Heljan tanks are a good swap for the Bachmann ones. You may need to drill out the two slots for switches though. Stephen

Any idea where I can get hold of some? Howes never seem to have any in stock these days. It's an ongoing issue when renumbering 47s, using Heljan battery boxes on a Bachmann chassis and it works pretty well. I often forget which ones I've done, which is a good sign. Popular Post Waverley West
Hi all, Well, I am now back from my summer hols. I had a quick photo session earlier this evening, as the sun was shining, so I thought I'd post a few pics along with an update. Here are the piccies from this evening's session: In other news, all my v3.5 Class 47 sound chips have now been sold and I'm awaiting a final order from DC Kits to complete the updating of sounds in my 47s with Legomanbiffo's latest version. This is the first version of the 47 to truly grab me and I really like the features on the v5 which gives you complete control over the loco in terms of revs (read: 'thrash') and speed. The 47/0 is my favourite, but the 47/4 and 47/7 versions are good too. With some sales of old stock and the old sound chips, I've managed to upgrade my entire fleet of 47s pretty much at zero net cost. I've gone a bit 'duff mad' at the moment because of Charlie's latest 47 chip and no fewer than five new Bachmann 47s are now on the WW production line: GW Green 47628 probably to be renumbered as 47500 Great Western InterCity Swallow 47824 to remain as 824 Fire Fly Large Logo 47444 to be renumbered 47546 to replace my Heljan version (which will be sold) Large Logo 47444 to be renumbered 47644, again to replace my Heljan one which will also be sold Large Logo 47444 to remain as 47444. I remember seeing this loco at Temple Meads once and I got some nice photos of it. I could do with a non-Scottish Large Logo 47 too. 47s were the mainstay of internal Scottish services during the second half of the 80s, so that's my excuse for having so many anyway. Well, I think that's all for now. Other plans in the pipeline include starting to fit my Mk 1s and Mk 3s with internal lighting. Hope to be back soon with another update. Happy modelling! RMweb Premium keefer Posted August 18, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 18, 2019 love those pictures Dave, the strong light/dark contrast just make me think of the typical Scottish summer (particularly at the moment!) The last one especially - bright, hot sunshine with a black-sky downpour looming. In other words, typical Festival weather 9
Popular Post Waverley West
Hi all, Not a huge amount to report from WW recently. The sound upgrade to WW's Bachmann 47s is now complete and GW Green 47500 and InterCity Swallow 47834 are now nearing completion, so I hope to post some pics of those soon. I have squeezed in a couple of running sessions recently though, so I thought I'd post a few pics... 47710 arrives at Waverley from Glasgow Queen Street... ...and then departs not long after... ...followed by a 4-car DMU lash-up bound for Fife... A sunny day by the riverside... Meanwhile, 47001 is in for attention over at Haymarket MPD... ...as is 37692... I have a fair few more to post, but I've reached the upload limit now, so I'll be back! Popular Post Waverley West
Hi All, I thought I'd post a shameless, blatant plug for my planned exploits this weekend, as I'm doing the Great North Run again this Sunday (8th September) and this time I'm raising money for the Alzheimer's Society. As some of you will know, my mum has been suffering from Alzheimer's dementia for several years now, so this run has a very close personal link for me. I have posted this elsewhere, but I thought I'd post it here too to maximise coverage. A huge thank you to those who have already donated. It really is very much appreciated. I have now passed my original target of £350 and am just aiming to raise as much as I can now. A little background information on why I'm running for the Alzheimer's Society this year: About four years ago, my dad and I started noticing that my mum (now 89) was becoming more and more forgetful. Over the years since, her memory has increasingly failed her. That has been only one aspect of the disease though and her personality has also changed enormously. I was always very close to her, but as her condition has deteriorated, it has become more about simply making sure she is cared for and I now feel more of a parent to her than she is to me, which is very sad indeed. She has good days and bad days, with us (Mrs WW and myself - my dad having passed away in 2015) being public enemy no. 1 and interfering busybodies, while on good days. she is incredibly grateful for what we do for her. We never know what to expect from one day to the next, which can be difficult to deal with sometimes. She is getting to the point now where she sometimes does not recognise me, particularly in photographs. She's still living on her own, but attends a day centre five days a week. Her living on her own is very marginal now though, as she is not really up to the task of caring for herself anymore. We are now at the stage where we're going to have to insist that if she is to continue living in her own home, she will need regular help around the house. As she doesn't accept she is anything more than occasionally a little forgetful because of her age, we are under no illusion that this is going to be an easy task. She has always been a fiercely independent woman and that's going to make getting her to accept help all the more difficult. Deep breath time. I've often heard it said that you lose someone who has dementia twice over, once with the loss of personality and then again when they actually pass away. I must admit I can see exactly what they mean and I'm sure there are many people on here who have been or are going through exactly the same thing. Caring for someone with dementia is about so much more than them forgetting things. It's about losing a loved one twice over. This is not intended as a sob story at all, just an account which I hope will raise awareness of what having a close relative with dementia is like. I'm well aware there are many people in worse situations and that it's only going to get harder from here. I’m very late getting round to fundraising this year, as I’ve had a knee injury for most of the summer which has stopped me running since March and I have only decided to actually do the run over the past week or so (after three weeks of training!). This makes this year's run extra challenging for me! I would of course be very grateful for any donations of any size, no matter how small, to help me raise as much as I can for the Alzheimer's Society. You can donate via the link below or simply PM me if you'd prefer. https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/donation-web/fundraiser?fundraiserActivityId=1121507&stop_mobi=yes Thank you for taking the time to read this post. Cheers Dave (Waverley West) PS Will be back with more piccies soon! 3
Waverley West
Hi folks, Just a quick post to thank everyone who has sponsored me so far. Every time I've asked you to stump up your hard-earned cash for a good cause, you've really come up trumps. It really is life-affirming. Thank you all so much. I'm hoping to raise in the region of £700 in total, which is fantastic. Instead of running all that way though, I reckon I could catch the X34 bus from Newcastle to South Shields. It takes about 50 minutes to get to South Shields, so a personal best would be guaranteed and I'd stand a chance of putting an end to Mo's winning streak if I don't hang about getting off. Don't know why I haven't thought of that before. Last minute preparations now under way... sitting down, doing nothing. The forecast is looking good. Good luck to anyone else on here doing it! Cheers Dave 2 1
