RMweb Gold colin penfold Posted January 26, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 26, 2019 Very well deserved accolades Dave. You are my blue diesel guilty pleasure and looking at your layout instantly transports me to that freezing morning with my camera in Princes Gardens.... The layout is a brilliant piece of modest-space design and modelling. A great concept and superb execution. Plus from a modelling perspective you are clearly a very able all-rounder who can kit bash stock, paint, scratch build, lay track, cope with electrics and operate realistically. Waverley West
Thanks guys for all the great feedback! It really is a pleasure to post on here. I actually managed a couple of hours of modelling today, so I thought I'd have a go at my first BOC tank wagon. These really are lovely wagons, beautifully detailed despite their apparently simple design, and the printing on them has to be seen to be believed. I have now completed the first one. This one will become part of my Speedlink rake. It actually turned out to be harder to weather than most wagons, as the white livery shows up every imperfection. They often seemed to be pretty clean, but there tended to be a subtle coating of grime on the tanks themselves and the various seams always seemed to attract a certain amount of dirt. I was eventually happy with the way this one turned out, but it took a lot longer than I expected and completing a rake of them looks like it is going to take a little while. Here is the first one, completed today... Also under way now is a little extra project - two inspection saloons, one to be put into ScotRail livery (of course) and the other into InterCity. I picked these up cheaply a while ago and have been wanting to do them for some time. I was wondering whether Bachmann might have announced the saloon in at least one of these liveries. They did after all announce Large Logo 47711, early ScotRail Mk 2s, 37012 and the ScotRail BG, all of which can already be found on WW (albeit 37012 is in white stripe livery, not large logo). This is the current state of progress... Cheers for now, Dave Edited January 27, 2019 by Waverley West

RMweb Premium ColinK Posted January 27, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 27, 2019 For me, WW is the most inspiring model I’ve ever seen. Yes, I’ve been to Miniature Wonderland and Pendon, but Waverley West is such a good model of a scene I remember well. Great to see you winning awards, you deserve them. 1
Waverley West
Hi folks, Not much to report at the moment, although work is continuing on the two inspection saloons, with the dark executive grey currently being sprayed. In anticipation of more progress, here's a recent video showing some of WW's McDuffs in action, including a new mixed-livery push-pull rake, representing the later years of these rakes, which seemed to be made of all kinds of Mk 2s and liveries. I've also decided to add a few extra dead-end sidings to one of the fiddle yards to accommodate my double-ended trains (push-pull sets, HSTs and DMUs). This will require a small extra board and will enable more varied stock to be kept on the layout at any one time without taking up much more space. Hope to be back soon with another update. aac
It's one thing to see a layout and say you recognize the place it portrays. But with this video of the real thing, you can say that in seeing the place, you recognize the layout! Congratulations on your awards. aac 3

Popular Post Waverley West
Hi folks, Just a quick pitstop update. I've made it over to the "new" site, although not without a few hiccups along the way. I'm still finding my way round the site and it doesn't seem as intuitive as the old one (especially as regards viewing specific content), which doesn't help. I don't have a lot of time to learn all the various (no doubt wonderful) view settings, but I'm sure I'll gradually get used to it. Work is progressing on the two inspection saloons. ScotRail DM45020 has progressed further, as a yellow first class stripe had to be added to the InterCity one. Both are well advanced now though and the roofs are next, which will reduce the width of the cantrail bands on the two saloons shown in the photo below, as they extend onto the roof at the moment. In other news, weathering of my rake of BOC tankers is now finished as well, but these wagons have caused me no end of trouble with derailments. The first thing I realised was that the back-to-back measurements of all the wheels were too narrow. I then realised that the close coupling mechanisms just weren't returning to centre and then over-centre on reverse curves. As a result, I have so far modified four of the seven in the rake by largely removing the triangular shaped piece of plastic in the coupling mechanism on the underframe which pulls the wagons closer together on the straight. I have gradually been adding the wagons to the rake on the layout as I've modified them and I now have a six-wagon rake running reasonably well, so that leaves one more left to do. Close coupling mechanisms have really caused me a lot of headaches over the years with WW's relatively complicated trackwork. By contrast, my rake of Bachmann TEA tankers runs like a dream through virtually every part of the layout, simply because the couplings are fitted to the bogies. I can't say that the distance between the Bachmann wagons causes me any grief either, but CCMs certainly have over the years. I had the same problem on my Heljan Cargowaggon wagons too (not to mention my Hornby diesels). The CCMs on my Bachmann Mk 2fs seem to work OK, but I will be very wary of buying any more Heljan bogie wagons or other bogie wagons with CCMs in the future, especially for use in long rakes. There, rant over! The BOC tankers do look very impressive though and they scrub up very nicely indeed with a bit of light weathering, so they have been well worth persevering with. Here are a few close-ups showing the "clean, but in-service" look. The ends usually seemed to be the dirtiest part of them. Hope to be back soon, as I have a few videos to put together. Popular Post Waverley West
Hi folks, Here is the latest video from Waverley West as promised... Following 26025 on a ballast train and 26004 on a nuclear flask train, plus some footage of Railfreight-liveried 47211 on the new rake of rule 1 BOC tankers. Turn up the volume for a bit of Sulzer thrash. 25

RMweb Premium ColinK Posted February 15, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 15, 2019 Stunning, brilliant video. I did get distracted by the quality and detail in the trackwork. WW is modern image Pendon. 1

Popular Post Waverley West
Hi folks, Here is a quick video which includes the new BOC rake, which has now been extended to seven tanks. It's not 100% reliable, as it still sometimes derails on one particular part of the layout. Ironically enough, this is on an off-scene section where I used a couple of lengths of code 100 set track - precisely to reduce derailments. Ain't that just typical? In other news, the ScotRail inspection saloon is now nearing completion (with basically just the curtains plus a few external details to be fitted now). I have fitted internal lighting to it as well. Its InterCity counterpart is not far behind either. I've also cut the first board for a small extension to one of the fiddle yards. This board will have five dead-end sidings for holding push-pull rakes and HSTs and will basically give me room for another five rakes on the layout any one time, which will come in handy for the new DBSO push-pull rakes in particular. Work has also started on the new Freightliner rake now too, with the removal of logos from the first container. Looking at photos of container trains from the 80s (sad I know), very few containers seemed to be marked with logos, so I thought I could "1980'ise" my rake by removing the company logos. We'll see how it turns out anyway. Hope to be back soon with another update. Cheers for now, Dave 26

RMweb Premium PJ10 Posted March 11, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 11, 2019 Evening Dave, I was missing my Waverley fix so thanks for posting. Your modelling is simply superb but then as someone who grew up in Edinburgh and spent many happy days on the real platforms or trying to get round Haymarket, I may be somewhat biased. Waverley West
Hi folks, Just a quick update as, after a modelling session this afternoon, the ScotRail inspection saloon is now all but finished. I just have to fit one handrail and do a tiny bit of touching up. DCC-controlled interior lighting has been fitted, but has yet to be tested. I've asked Steve at Railtec Transfers to do the transfers for the ends too, but I have yet to hear back from him. I know he's a busy man though. Its InterCity counterpart is a little behind, but should be completed in the near future too. In other news, I have bought some LED daylight bulbs for the railway room. These will cut energy consumption by 90% and give me daylight lighting, rather than the yellowy lighting at present. They are also dimmable, so at some stage I hope to fit a dimmer switch too. Hope to be back soon with another update. Cheers for now, Dave PS I don't know what is happening with the image editor these days, but I can't seem to get rid of images that I've decided not to show. So I'm stuck with the pretty rubbish shot of the front shown below. I've tried everything "clear editor", "delete photo", starting again, you name it. 13

Popular Post Waverley West
Hi folks, Modelling time has been marginalised recently due to life getting in the way. However, I have managed to finish off the ScotRail inspection saloon and the InterCity version is not far behind now. It mainly needs a decoder and lighting installing along with reassembly. There are a couple of works jobs to be done after then, including restoring Large Logo 37043 to service and investigating Railfreight 47211, as it's been causing a short circuit at a certain part of the layout. Then I think it will be back to the Freightliner train. In the meantime, here are some shots of the finished ScotRail saloon... Hope to be back soon! Cheers for now, Dave
