technohand
I am making a model of the Midland Railway Engine shed at Lincoln St Marks Station. Has any one got any drawings, plans or photos of the shed around 1900-1920.
Poor Old Bruce
Try the Lincolnshire County Record Office or Local Studies Library for Ordnance Survey maps of the time. They should have maps at 25in to the mile. Some important towns were done at 125in. Also try Alan Godfrey Maps on Google to see what they have re-printed. There is then the 1981 Wild Swan "LMS Engine Sheds, Volume Two, The Midland Railway" by Chris Hawkins and George Reeve (ISBN 0 906867 05 3) which gives a plan c1917 and some photos. cromptonnut
Anything here of use? They're 1955 I think but that's the best I can find. http://www.photrek.co.uk/romintro.html "Plate 9" seems to be the area you're looking for

Thanks very much Bruce. I've got the books and maps you mention. The County Record office needs a visit, which I hope to do later in the year. technohand
what scale is it going to be JOHN (Lincoln Central Station) http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/4887-lincoln-central-station/ Hello John Sorry I haven't replied before.I had more or less given up on any one having anything on St Marks!I am working in 4mm scale on EM guage track and the period is Midland Railway Co. Circa 1900. I have had a bit of luck, the Midland Railway Society's latest journal had a picture of the corner of the shed showing roof details and a pre 1900 track plan of the shed yard as part of an article on a Goods Clerk. By some careful planning and editing I have managed to fit the interesting bits into an area of 7 ft X 3 ft with a precinium arch and a fairly detailed back scene. The idea is to provide a scene for a collection of locos and special goods waggons I hope to be building in the future. Any way thats the plan! Pyewipe Jct
Hello Tony, I have a couple of pics in my collection of the shed in the 1920s, if they're of any use - they're mainly focussed on locos, but some details of the infrastructure can still be gleaned: MR 4-4-0, no. 408 & 0-6-0, no. 3595; Lincoln (LMSR) shed; Tuesday 8th July 1924 MR 0-6-0, no. 3377; Lincoln (LMSR) shed; 2.30pm, Tuesday 8th July 1924 MR 0-6-0, no. 3377; Lincoln (LMSR) shed; 12.20pm, Friday 8th August 1924 I have quite a few photos from the adjacent station & yard from the same period, but that's it for the shed, I'm afraid. technohand
Hi Kevin Thanks for the pictures.Looking at the map and site of the turn table the building in the background is the back of the station which is totally different from how I imagined. The detail of the turn table is really useful and very similar to the 55ft. table in the preview of the LMS Journal although only 50ft. Dia. So very belated thanks for the pictures and sincere apologies for the delay in contacting you. Regards Tony

I agree, with a lot of the photos in the album, even though the subject is usually very interesting, the real gems are often to be seen in the background
ozzyo
Love the photos, things like the following, grounded Pullman body (already mentioned). In photos 2 & 3, the two single bladed traps inside of the point. In photos 13 & 14, the loading gauge with three different gauges, all in the raised (not often modelled) position, along with the locking block trap (sorry I don't know its proper name) it's just in front of the loco in photo 13. technohand
What wonderful pictures. Thanks a lot lads that is a real help. I think my excuses for not getting down to doing some modelling are getting a bit thin! I am a bit tied up in EM Gauge 50 year competition at the moment.A group effort requiring some 1:4 point construction, probably not Midland though. Still in the South West Midland modellers are definetely in the minority!! Still thanks again for every ones help.
