RMweb Gold Popular Post Worsdell forever Posted October 18, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 18, 2020 Three wagons lettered today, 2 diagram A16 implement wagons and an A2 machine wagon, all connoisseur kits. One of the A16s I built many years ago and was probably my first etched wagon. The other was bought built. The A2 was built a couple of years ago. All three need a few more jobs doing, they need the rings for ropes/chains adding then couplings. 24
RMweb Gold Popular Post Worsdell forever Posted October 24, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 24, 2020 I built this class H a few years ago and finished it in LNER livery as No. 900, this was before I'd decided that all future builds would for the late NER period. I stripped off the lettering a few days ago and touched up some scuffed paint. It's now No. 898, a Middlesbrough engine in 1920. The lining turned out to be a lot simpler than I expected, closely studying the cracking photo thats in both North Eastern Record 3 and Ken Hoole's NER locos shows only a rectangular panel on the tank sides was lined, they didn't bother with the cab sides and cut outs, nice and straight forward! The boiler bands and footplate valence were also to do but these are usually simple enough. Class H didn't carry their numbers on their sides, only on the front buffer beam and the back of the cab, as you'd expect there aren't many photos of the back of the cab in NER days but there is one, in the NERA archive of No. 518, on its side, at about 50° to the track with one very loose wheel at either Gateshead or Tyne Dock. This shows the number in the centre of the cab rear panel in shaded numerals, I can't really work out whether they are gold or yellow. I've gone with gold for now, they're the numbers used on the 1463 'Tennant's'. 27
RMweb Premium Daddyman Posted October 25, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 25, 2020 Presumably 898 didn't get its front steps and tank-front handrails until LNER days? - possibly when at North Road?

Hope so, they were certainly built without them and photos I've seen are without them. Trouble is we may never know the identity of many if the photographed locos.

RMweb Premium Blandford1969 Posted October 25, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 25, 2020 A completely random question, prompted by these lovely wagons. Can you recommend where to get the axle boxes for these wagons, I got a Pocket Money Kits set of etches without the axleboxes and when I asked about castings was told they were no longer available. These wagons were built years ago, long before I had all these books and the internet to hand and followed the kit 'instructions', the implement wagons have the correct bar stays but the machine wagon has plate ones where they should be bar as you have done. It will stay as it is as it's soldered solid and starting again from scratch would be easier than rectifying it!

No. 2 axleboxes with springs (though they'll maybe need a bit of work on them) are available from Wizard models, part nerc006, though whether the springs are heavy enough I'm not sure, axleboxes are available separately and maybe bigger springs. The dampers would be easily made up with wire and small tube. 1
RMweb Gold Popular Post Worsdell forever Posted December 31, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted December 31, 2020 Surely not a GWR van, you've got more than enough of those. But wait, look closer, there's something a bit different about it, look at the axleboxes, and the brake lever and the doors... Of course, its an NER diagram G8 Gunpowder van... 27
RMweb Gold Popular Post Worsdell forever Posted December 31, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted December 31, 2020 The only bit of the cast plate on the door that I could read is the first line, 'Notice' so I kind of made the rest up a bit... It looks about right. 6
RMweb Gold chris p bacon Posted December 31, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 31, 2020 I don't know much about the NER but I've always enjoyed reading this thread, now as I'm in the process of moving to NER territory (The nearest station is/was Mindrum on the Alnwick - Cornhill branch) I've found myself perusing some NER kits..... 7

Welcome to the wilderness Chris...once this pandemic has run its course you must come along and meet the North East and Borders area group of the EM gauge society...an eclectic group of modellers from both sides of the border who meet every month or so for a lecture/demonstration/talk, or just to spend an afternoon with like minded souls (and drink tea). They are (apparently) the best attended area group of the EM gauge society which is probably because they are a broad church and all are welcomed (from 009 to gauge 1)...they even let me attend from time to time. http://www.modelrailwayclubs.co.uk/clubs/northumberland/n-e-borders-area-group-(e-m-gauge-society) 2

One proviso with the purchase was a dedicated railway room which I'm lucky enough to have. Is there a regular meeting place? They usually meet in either Elsdon (near Otterburn) or Stannington (near Morpeth), but have also been know to pop up in Southdean (on the road to Hawick) and Cornhill. The annual show (Workshop Wise) is held around September in Stannington village hall...and is as famous for its catering as it is for the quality of the modelling. Mr Gallon comes up every year, just for his breakfast...
