dullsteamer Posted June 11, 2012 Share Posted June 11, 2012 Whilst I had the camera out this evening, I thought I'd take a few photos of the "new" 298 in primer whilst out on test to Wiley City before returning the paint shop. The original handrails and cab front windows but with additional headlights and bell moved to the roof date it to the 1940's when in black with hand painted lettering. I particularly like 298 in its 40s guise Andy, looks very impressive. Who makes the headlight castings you've used on the hoods? All the best, Mark. dullsteamer Posted June 12, 2012 Share Posted June 12, 2012 Andy, they're based on some Indiana Railroad locos. No.750 was a GE 40-tonner, ex Interstate Public Service No.605. No.751 was a Baldwin/Westinghouse B-1, ex Interstate Public Service No.606. No.753 was a homebuilt loco very similar to a B/W Class D, ex Terre Haute Indianapolis & Eastern No.196. No.750 is a kitbashed MRRW/Cannonball GE kit like your models of YVT 298, No.751 is an MTS brass model like your YVT 297, and No.753 is a kitbash from the MRRW/Red Ball etched brass kit for a B/W Class D. I should mention that, while I've always been interested in traction, it was seeing "Selah (Fruit Row)" featured in CM that inspired me to start work on a US-prototype layout of my own. A recent eBay find was this, a first edition cover that was carried on the inaugural Trolley run. 298 Posted September 20, 2013 Author Share Posted September 20, 2013 I'd say this is a new arrival to Wiley City, even if the NWSL Master Units I have had been in the stock box for some time. I was unsure of the correct colours as the preserved cars in Yakima carry different shades of green, however I think the darker green is closer to how the cars were painted in the 1930's and match some vintage colour film footage that I have and matches the Custom Traxx decals. It is numbered as no.20 to avoid clashing with the two cars in Yakima, and in recognition of the car that is abandoned in the woods near Snoqualmie, WA. 298 Posted March 11, 2014 Author Share Posted March 11, 2014 With the layout having completed four shows since my last posting on here, and nothing definite after TVNAM in June apart from a few open invites (which is the way I like it, Mrs 298 will soon be returning to work after Maternity leave so I won't have alot of time or leave to waste on such frivolities as model railway shows), I thought I'd draw things on here to a conclusion by posting a few smartphone photos from the last few months. These include the recently finished Interurban cars 100 and 300 from Labelle kits to enable the layout to be backdated to a generic 1920 to 40's era, with stock and road vehicles to suit. Overall, I'd say the layout seems to be appreciated by visitors on the exhibition circuit, whether they have heard of the prototype or wouldn't normally look at a non-British layout. But then there is the usual "is the overhead live...?" question that really is immaterial to the overall scene but people seeming use to rate an overhead layout. I could tell you about specific comments that at best left me speechless and at worst in need of a walk outside for some fresh air and a calm down, but won't for fear that the perpetrators might identify themselves. Unfortunately, around them are a few businesses that closed and the buildings pulled down, and finding exact photos of them has been difficult. Cars 100 & 300, the kitbashed Labelle Combine & Freight motor as seen in the first two photos. The drives are modified Bachmann Underground Ernie components, the drive shafts are NWSL (not really necessary if you're only driving on one truck as the motor can be spaced to use the original).
