hi rka this takes me back a few years when all we had Hornby or lima.i allways thought the Hornby body was a far better shape, just let down by the elderly detailing.heres some shots of my 2 Hornby 37s complete with Dave Alexander sideframes, adds a bit of wieght.i also scratch built the fuel tanks from plasticard. If youve not seen them the late Monty Wells articles in the railway modeller back in the 1980s.they certainly kickstarted my modelling as they cover a lot of basic modelling techniques and they are all diesel models, which back then was a bit rare.post-4446-0-56340200-1300915859_thumb.jpgheres both of em together, ithink the split box one looks far better.post-4446-0-08735600-1300915939_thumb.jpgthis is a good side on view.i had just finished both of these when A1 models brought out a set of etched bodyside grills, but i dont think they were on sale for long.post-4446-0-35113200-1300916005_thumb.jpgheres a recreation of D5901s trip back from being rebuilt at the vulcan factory to Doncaster works by D6976.post-4446-0-95159900-1300916105_thumb.jpg then if your really felling brave you could try a baby deltc chopped down from a Hornby 37.have fun and at the end of the day you can say i made that!

wow, they look amazing hope mine look half as good as them,

I have the monty wells articles and I originally bought the 37 to convert to a baby deltic, but I found a couple of the a1 kits for them, although I made a pigs ear of the one I tried doing and ended up putting it in the bin, except the bogie frames, fuel tanks and buffers which I've used on the 37.

Still have a couple of the baby deltic kits to do but I like the look of your baby deltic so might get round to doing one after a pair of class 22 conversions, a falcon conversion, a class 25/3 conversion, dp2 conversion, a pair of q kits lms twins and a couple more!!!

I keep on buying old kits and conversions and now have probably a years worth of things to do, but keeps me of the streets, although my girlfriend does keep wondering what on earth i'm doing at times

Those 37s capture the look of the prototype as I remember them when they first appeared, passing my primary school classroom in 1965.

I redid one myself using the bogies and motor from the Hornby Class 50 (available from East Kent Models- usual disclaimer), but it could do with larger wheels. It's ballasted with quite a lot of lead, and as my French colleagues would say ' It would pull the train, and the station as well'

Fitting the Vi-Trains underframe is another possibility.

are you sure that's not a slide taken in the 60s? fantastic loco

i think the thing is, for all its faults the 37 has the correct 'face', particularly the windscreens (compared to, say a lima 40)

well done to everyone for some great modelling

All thiese photos and projects remind me of when lots of members of the old group DEmod (who remembers that?!) were attemtping all sorts of methods to capture the look of a tractor - just around the time of the original Bachmann 37/4. Clive Mortimor was one of the biggest supporters of the Hornby model which, in its main dimensions, was better than anything available at the time.

Hi 5Bel, glad you like it mate and that you've dug your out, think james needs to now aswell!!!

Give me time :D

It's looking really good now - the first too pictures especially (due to the angles from which they're taken) really capture the bulk of a 37 :) The Hornby body really has got the right shape, but many people can't look beyond the slightly dated tooling and see it. I suspect some people think it's rubbish because it doesn't have stupidly bright LED headlamps too!

The underframe mods make a big difference too - glad the fuel tanks came in handy :)

This really does show how well the Hornby body can look!

I think you've got the colouring of livery and weathering absolutely spot on! You're also much braver than many people who wouldn't dare use such bold weathering shades! But I do like that! :)

I'm afraid a comment like that is useless without photos! ;)

Fitting the Vi-Trains underframe is another possibility.

With the cheap Vi chassis available from people like Hattons it probably represents the best value for money option now I think. Unless you're modelling a loco with cast bogies in which case the Hornby bogies are spot on :)

I agree James, there just isn't enough filth on RMweb, steam or diesel! Very convincing, as usual gonzo… now I want one!

there is some amazing models now been shown in this thread, as I said before I just hope mine is worthy when it's finished not done too much last few days due to commuting to milton keynes and back every day and got to do it this weekend aswell but so long as traffic is ok on way home i'll do some more tonight, as I find the m1 a pretty inspiration sapping s***hole in heavy traffic, even more so on the section between lutterworth and leicester where the trackbed of the great central is right at the side of you, and you wish that the line was still there just to take some of the traffic, what a short sighted decision shutting and dismatling the infrastructure of that line was

well after what seems like an age of just logging on to browse the site I thought I'd better start trying to model again!! new years resolutions etc.

My Hornby class 37 never got any further on, and I just accumulated more "projects" so I have decided to restart my Silver Fox Falcon.

This is powered by two Lima class 31 bogies as I have these instock and managed to get a Heljan Falcon tank assembly, so this has been assembled first.

When I've had a good look at the body the first thing what I noticed was the bodyside grills look nothing like the prototype, which I accept must have been a limititation of what detail could be moulded, and these are what put me off finishing the model all together.

The other things I noticed where the cab windows are the wrong shape(lima class 47 I presume) and the area under the buffers is to shallow.

A chance search on the site for falcon grills lead me to macgeordie who had drawn up the bodyside grills, when contacted luckily he agreed to get these etched for me along with the cab window frames and a few other parts, so armed with these I've made a start on this again.

here is the etch

here is the body in primer(as it was left) showing the moulded grills and opened out windows

apologies for the poor quality phots these have been taken with my camera phone.

next job before attaching the grills is alter the bufferbeam area to make it deeper

will post more photos when I've done it

I think this does quite alot for the look of the front of the model along with the opened out cab windows.

I have also flattened off the lip above the headcode panel as this was curved, whereas on the prototype it's flat.

Hi RKA,

Nice to see the Silver Fox stuff getting an airing. The first thing I did here on RMWEB on my Little Didcot thread was thier No. 18000 and I really enjoyed doing it. They are great kits and so much nicer than just opening a box I think! I look forward to seeing the end product. I may not be one for the diesels personally but you are producing some lovely work. The thread title does not do you justice...

All the best,

Castle

Thank you for your comments,I watched your 18000 build and was very impressed with it, infact it's on my list to obtain.

Not done too much, got the other valance on, I have done a little more to shape them, mainly on the sides of the valance, where on the prototype they angle in towards the bogies, I need to get some primer on them to see how they look.

While checking through my parts box,I found some extreme etchings class 47 cab side window etches which on offering up look like an excellent fit so in due course they will be added.

Progress will not be quick on this as I am starting a welding course but will post pictures as and when I have time to model.

This is how it looks now which I think looks much more like the real thing already

Nice job but you seem to have fitted refurbished grills on the nose ends which are wrong original split and centre box tractors. Refurbished centre boxes ones received them, however all split box ones that did had the headcode boxes cut off and plated over with marker lights in their place.

Progress has halted on the falcon due to me needing to figure out hiw to form the surround which the higher grills sit between, so along side falcon I am doing silver fox models kestrel.

I bought this from ebay and it's bufferbeams were damaged so I bought the Heljan parts for it and painted it in br blue , but wasn't happy with it so I've decied to redo it.

one of the things that I wasn't happy with was the body side grill so I had a think and came up with using evergreen clapboard siding to represent the louvres and fixed sone mainly trains rivet strip to form the surround. I have had to make it slightly bigger but I think it looks a lot better than the moulded effortpost-8180-0-84765000-1392669765_thumb.jpg
