It was hot in the loft today, but I was able to stand it for long enough to photograph the afternoon pickup goods shunting at Slitrigg.....

That's a very interesting level crossing. Is it based on a prototype?

No but it reflects interesting layouts that I have come across, typically in the north east.  The trailing connection to the yard doesn’t have a headshunt and the extra pair of gates protect road users when shunting is taking place. In my world, they are hand worked, whereas the other four are worked from the SB. The three way trailing point on the main line is also unusual!  All in all it is interesting to operate, with the pick up goods stabled in the station platform and the shunting preventing pedestrian access to the station!

Further action in the loft this morning as the pick up goods arrives and shunts at Whinburgh.  First though, the passenger train must depart from platform 3, after picking up two Passenger rated vans from the loading bay

Finally, whilst the loco crew enjoy another cup of tea at the signal box, a V2 thunders through on a train of fish empties heading for the yards in Edinburgh

I hope you enjoyed these sequences. You can see areas of the layout that are not yet complete, including the station platforms at Whinburgh which were started 20 years ago!  I have to be selective in the scenes that I photograph:)

Next time I will find some express trains to photograph

I have spent much of my hobby time repairing and repainting coaches, vans and wagons, and reforming some of the trains that run on Whinburgh. Her are a few recent pics

The Stove R is one of the Ian Allen models released a few years ago. It is a lovely rendition that benefits from having its over small wheels replaced. Whilst it negotiates the curves ok, it tends to rock on the centre axle and derail on my less than perfect track so I need to adjust the centre axle so that it floats and does not support any weight

Some of my six-wheelers (not a Stove R) now run with only four for that reason.

On mine I stopped the outer axles from pivoting, and filed out the middle axle bearing so that it now has vertical play (as well as fitting bigger wheels) and it now runs well.

I thought of doing that but would like to retain the 6-wheel look

Could you not cut off the flanges from the middle wheels? I tried that on one of my old ones a few years ago and it meant they could negotiate small radius code 75 points in a goods yard.

I've done something similar on diesels where the middle bogie wheels were on stub axles and floated about all over the place. I glued them up solid and filed the flanges flat at the bottom.

It isn’t the flanges that are a problem. It is the fact that the chassis doesn’t have any compensation.

Great pictures. I love the Ivatt 4, a loco I have fired countless times. That roof between tender and loco looks just as lethal on your model as on the real thing! You do need a good dose of oil around the tender tank filler cap - no-one ever cleans there and it always catches you out (usually with a crowd on-looking).

Hopefully we’ll catch up soon!

Andy

I have today commissioned in to operation two signals at Whitrope Siding SB. I made them some time ago but they haven’t been connected to the lever frame until now  Photos to follow when I have reorientated and resized them

The lockdown is providing plenty of time to progress the scenery and complete parts that other opportunities can’t reach. I am now finishing the long straight below Whinburgh, first by taking a rubbing of the track laid (temporarily!) 12 years ago and then reconstructing the formation on prestretched lining paper

This is followed by colour detailing the rails and sleepers, the addition of ballast, removal of excess when dry and then a final paint before refitting
