RMweb Premium Downer Posted March 30, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 30, 2011 Does anyone know for certain what livery Hornby are giving the first release of their BR Gresley suburbans? Maroon has been mentioned more often than crimson, but the only picture so far seems to show unlined crimson. I shall buy a rake whichever it is, but it would be nice to know. DougN
No idea on the liveries, other than I am interested in the LNER teaks. I would be curious to know what volume Hornby are making of each coach. I am aware that the catalogue shows that an A version is expected in the first run. I am really looking forward to the stock as my layout needs more coaches and it is a serious lack of Suburbans at the moment. I think I might buy one of each type to start with. Darth Vader
Page 102 of the 2011 Hornby catalogue lists the BR version as being maroon.
Boscarne
Hornby had these on show at the Great Dorset Steam Fair this week.
Guest Max Stafford
Well that's crimson in my book and a far more attractive colour in any case! Dave.
MikeTrice
Hornby had these on show at the Great Dorset Steam Fair this week. Thanks for the photos. Was the BG in evidence as well by any chance? For the suburbans Hornby's paint specification states "Crimson".

Markeg
These look good. I have ordered a set of LNER teaks. The BR version looks good too. mmmmm! I hope they are delayed till after Christmas as the CC will get a bashing with 2x B17's, D49, coaches, and a few other items. Dinkyme, I think Mike was referring to the 61' 6" gresley full brake (BG) of the main line stock. thanks for the photos. Mark
MikeTrice
Mike - Hope this is what you are looking for No, but I am not complaining. The BG is the Gresley Corridor Full Brake which may not be sufficiently advanced to display yet. I know I might be biased, but those suburbans sure look good. Guest Max Stafford
I don't think they had these in North Wales, Ian! ;-) Dave
Boscarne
Thanks for the photos. Was the BG in evidence as well by any chance? Mike, sorry no sign of the 61'6" BG there. Perhaps it's not ready yet because they're still re-shaping the roof......

coachmann
Out of sheer bone idleness I'll have a couple to make up a 'spare set' for the Guide Bridge working. I notice the teak suburbans are lined out. There is conflicting evidence about when lining ceased to be applied to non-corridor stock. One source says it ceased to be applied after 1923, which doesn't tie in with photos. For post-war and early BR days, it looks like the lining on teak will have to be obliterated. RMweb Premium mirreles31 Posted September 5, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 5, 2011 Am trying to find an excuse to have a rake of these, however I can't as yet find any photos of them on ex GCR metals around Sheffield. Were Gresley suburbans ever used in the area? If not I'll have to change history as they're very nice . Cheers Phil.
dinkyme
Here's the last lot of pictures I have of the teak versions, enjoy
RMweb Premium mirreles31 Posted September 5, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 5, 2011 After looking further than the end of my nose I answered my own question! Gresley subs. did run in local trains around Sheffield, and indeed some were built at Cravens, there's a nice ex works photo in 'Sheffield Victoria to Chesterfield Central' by Ken Grainger, of Lav. Comp. no. 63914 outside the works. Phil.
Weekday Cross
The perennial problem with LNER livery stock is identifying wooden panelled bodies as opposed to flush steel bodies, with lining to imitate the wooden panelling - much clearer to see in BR livery.
RMweb Premium mirreles31 Posted September 5, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 5, 2011 Agreed, two pics I have found are in BR livery & one is a 3/4 view so the panelling is in relief, so not the Thompson variant. Both hauled by C13s.
coachmann
That Hornby All-first is an oddball. I'll bet it would be a very slow seller if it were a kit.
ianwales
Hi All Just been looking at these coaches on the Hornby site, surprised to find the RRP is going to be £43, just a tad on the high side I think personally. Ian
