Torn-on-the-platform
Not only do I see Mike's viewpoint, I also agree with him and feel the money would have been far better spent elsewhere. However, the decision has been made and it is quite a remarkable feat to have them both back here and I have never quite managed to make myself 100% against the idea. I agree in some respect with everyone who wants to see the 6 A4s together - it is a fantastic opportunity and I hope that I will be available at the time it happens to see it myself. They are both locomotives that I would be unlikely to ever see so its nice to have the chance. Michael's photos in particular are fantastic, and it would take someone with the most hardened opinion against the idea not to be won over by them! Coldgunner
A very understanding boss allowed me to take Thursday off to go to Shildon. Heading up first thing in the morning, but I've booked the return journey 1st class, never travelled first class on east coast (or anywhere) before, it will be nice after a day of walking around, photographing and filming. jwealleans
Number 10 has a corridor tender, No. 8 a non-corridor.

S.A.C Martin
Interesting to note that there are two non-corridor tenders and four corridor tenders on the six A4s - it would have been three of each but Bittern's was rebuilt into a corridor tender. Bon Accord
Am I correct in assuming that 8 Gresley tenders survive: 6 on A4's, 1 x A3 and 1 as Bitterns water carrier?
S.A.C Martin
Am I correct in assuming that 8 Gresley tenders survive: 6 on A4's, 1 x A3 and 1 as Bitterns water carrier? Yes, that sounds right to me. However it should also be noted that the tender from the lone W1 survives (behind Union of South Africa I believe). Coldgunner
The water carrier is built on the old frames from 4472's water tender. Those frames being sold to the a1slt and then onto Bitterns owner. The water tender I believe was originally converted from a standard A3 tender. The big difference with regard to the W1 tender was the disc rather than spoked wheels.
Bon Accord
Simon/Coldgunner, Hazy memory tells me that before it was sold to Alan Pegler, what became the water carrier came from 60009, which was then paired up with the ex W1 tender. Is that correct or am I getting confused?
Coldgunner
Not sure what loco the water carrier came from, but yes, 60009 is currently paired with the prototype W1 tender.

69843
Simon/Coldgunner, Hazy memory tells me that before it was sold to Alan Pegler, what became the water carrier came from 60009, which was then paired up with the ex W1 tender. Is that correct or am I getting confused? That is correct Jim. The nine tenders in preservation are: 5324-1928 Corridor-60007 Sir Nigel Gresley 5325-1928 Corridor-4472 Flying Scotsman (cut down sides, due to being modified to run behind 60033 Seagull during the 1948 locomotive exchange trials) 5326-1928 Corridor-60010 Dominion of Canada 5332-1928 Corridor-60019 Bittern (rebuilt water carrier(with 60009 from 6/11/1963 to 1/6/1966, then with Scotsman as water carrier before rebuilding to go behind Bittern) 5484-1929 Corridor-60009 Union of South Africa (former W1 tender) 5638-1936 Streamlined-60019 Bittern (rebuilt as a 1928 Corridor style tender) 5670-1936 Streamlined-4468 Mallard (masquerading as 5642 (the real 5642 was to be a water carrier for 60007, but was cut up in 1975) 5671-1936 Streamlined-60008 Dwight D. Eisenhower (Information taken from the Sir Nigel Gresley website chime articles 'A tangle of tenders' parts one and four). Edit: Forgot to add that 5484 was indeed from 60700 (the W1)

jwealleans
The whole thing has been repainted in what you might describe as approximations of the correct colours.
Guest Tom F
The whole thing has been repainted in what you might describe as approximations of the correct colours. Yes, I think it's true to say 60008 is a rather interesting colour in general.... Anyhow here are some of my photos from today, plus DofC's original bell and whistle in the workshop. It felt very special seeing these two today. For me only knowing and seeing 60007, 60009, 60022 and 60019, it did feel like seeing two locos back from the dead. 60008 and 60010 together 60008 'Dwight D Eisenhower' 60010 'Dominion of Canada'
