RMweb Premium DLT Posted October 2, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 2, 2018 (edited) With something of a sense of relief, the coach and van are just about complete enough for the club competition. Or at least, one side is complete! The other side, in allover red-brown, will have to wait a few days; but should all be done in time for the Taunton Exhibition at the end of the month. Cheers, Dave. RMweb Premium DLT Posted October 21, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 21, 2018 (edited) The later period other side has now at last been done, glazed etc. I have run out of my old-faithfull Humbrol "Red Leather" colour, from their earlier "Authentic" range, so I've had to mix a matching colour as best I can. If they look a bit bare, its because there's no seats inside. Refitting them SHOULD be the final act, and I can say the coaches are finished. I think the van looks particularly impressive, and I'm looking forward to running them on the layout at Taunton next weekend. Cheers, Dave. RMweb Premium DLT Posted October 21, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 21, 2018 (edited) Seating has been refitted, so I guess they are finished! Interior detail is nothing to get excited about, dark varnish effect and blue upholstery in the first-class, lighter effect and red in the third. The interior view also shows the messy glueing of the glazing, door handles etc. The intention is that everything looks fine through the windows, its not meant to be super-detailed. Cheers, Dave. RMweb Premium DLT Posted December 30, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 30, 2018 (edited) After a gap of nearly a year, I'm getting started again on the Hunslet 2-4-2 locos. First job is to mark out the tank/cabsides on brass sheet. When using a GWModels riveter, you need to do the riveting BEFORE you cut out the shapes, so here are two sides marked and riveted. The tanks are overlong at the moment, I haven't worked out the exact length yet, as they wrap around at the front end. RMweb Premium DLT Posted January 4, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 4, 2019 (edited) After quite a bit or trial and error, I think I've got the curves of the tank front in the right place, also the end riveting and the spacing of the tanks relative to the footplate and boiler. The second loco should be much quicker! So for now it looks like this: And with the tanks perched on the footplate: Edited September 9, 2022 by DLT

Very nice work Thanks Pete, I actually used several methods for cutting the brass sheet, depending on the shape required. I will provide some photos when I do the next batch of cutting. For now I'm still working on the cab and tanks assembly, I seem to be producing a kit of parts for this loco, maybe I should have looked at etching..... Anyway, further progress has seen a lot more use of the GW Models riveter (one of my best ever purchases) and these are the latest parts. Left to right, cab front, inner tanksides, and cab rear. I haven't cut the cab-roof profile yet, or done the spectacles. These will be done by the same method as on Boadicea, described a little way down this page: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/35253-dlts-ng-workbench-back-to-the-hunslets/page-21 Cheers, Dave. RMweb Premium DLT Posted January 8, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 8, 2019 (edited) Cab front and rear done, probably time to start assembling. Edited September 9, 2022 by DLT 12
rockershovel
That riveting really is most effective, very regular - which I think is the key to the overall effect.
RMweb Premium DLT Posted January 15, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 15, 2019 (edited) The bodywork is now in one piece! The cab and tanks are one unit, screwed to the footplate. I'll add more photos when I've done the cab rear. Edited September 9, 2022 by DLT 10

RMweb Premium DLT Posted January 25, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 25, 2019 (edited) Not much progress over the last week, but getting going again. A few more bits soldered to the cab/tank assembly: The cab rear and roof are a separate assembly that will (probably) lightly glue in place once finished: This view shows the way the cab/tanks are fixed to the footplate; two screws inside the cab bunkers, and two more in the tanks. The cab rear is located by two rods in holes in the footplate, and the roof slotted into the front. Edited September 9, 2022 by DLT 14

Interesting family resemblance to Russell & the Sierra Leone Hunslets. Thanks John, that was the general intention. The body proportions are based closely on Leeds No.1. If you're wondering why this topic has gone quiet, its been a touch on the cold side in the workshop recently, so I've been writing articles for NG&I Review instead. All the best, Dave.

Just remind us again where you get the dome and chimney? Thanks very much. I actually made the boiler fitting myself, (chimney, dome, smokebox-door) many years ago, for a multi-loco project that didn't happen. They are coming in very useful now though! Unfortunately the chimney is a bit small for this loco, it really needs to be taller and fatter, so I'm on the search again. All the best, Dave.
RMweb Premium DLT Posted April 12, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 12, 2019 (edited) Not done much to the Hunslet(s) recently, but here's some photos taken on my phone, at the Exeter Gauge 0 Group last week.
