carl1967
Hi all after seeing many posts of detailing a Hornby class 37 i have to share my efforts with you all, (sorry) I will start with one i started some time ago and is still not finished but it only needs its name plates. The 2nd is also not finished but i am going to add more detail when i get round to it. The 3rd i have just started and i will show in pictures how i do everything step by step. Ask me anything; i will answer if i can. Carl

carl1967
and the 3rd i got this off ebay and it had been very badly hand painted so 1st thing i did was give it a good cote of model strip and put it in a carrier bag for 24h after a good wash it came out like this. carl1967
i have ordered full shawplan detailing parts so i have started by removing the side grills and filling and sanding the nose to the right shape. the rads will be done the same as the 2nd loco work so far.

RMweb Gold Richard_A Posted May 1, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 1, 2011 These are looking good mate and going better than my effort which has stalled untill the post man brings my resin nose ends from shawplan(the last pair), and then it's full throttle again, and if it's any use to anyone else brian is considering getting some more cast so if enough people ask he'll hopefully get some done soon. Dan Griffin
really really top notch, great to see old models being used for some 'proper' modelling. looking forward to seeing the next one. scraping the bogie footsteps off and scratch building new ones really does make a huge difference.

RMweb Gold Richard_A Posted May 1, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 1, 2011 just out of interest how have you made the radiator and the bracing? reason i'm asking is i'm making a late 60's model and on the full size loco's through the radiator mesh you can see the bracing and seen as I have a shawplan grill cover i'm thinking about recreating this. James
That's very neat work - is there a reason why you've chosen the Hornby model as your basis? Curious not judging!
carl1967
just out of interest how have you made the radiator and the bracing? reason i'm asking is i'm making a late 60's model and on the full size loco's through the radiator mesh you can see the bracing and seen as I have a shawplan grill cover i'm thinking about recreating this. this is my next task, so i will post a step by step pictorial. its made from plastic card, strip plastic and 0.5 wire. the shawplan grill mesh is a bit smaller then the Hornby, so cut out the Hornby gill mesh as i have but leave 0.5 on the inside of the grill frame before sanding it flat, or the hole mite be to big, i have fitted the shawplan grill on the 1st loco, but i did not remove the old horndy molding, you can see its smaller if you look. carl1967
That's very neat work - is there a reason why you've chosen the Hornby model as your basis? Curious not judging! its ok james i just like the modeling challenge. plus the Hornby 37 is more spot on then the lima molding in shape. but i am using a modifide lima chassis for this Hornby body. so its going to be a true limby
carl1967
nice posty droped all the goodys off today.
carl1967
i made a start on the cab windows. the cab windows sit to high, but its the nose roof thats to high, using a sharp flat blade, scrape plastic off at the sides of nose roof untill the windows fit. then place the window frames on the glass and run super glue round the outside edge with a sharp knife, only put what you need or the glass will frost. then cut them out and fit them to see if a good fit, if so glue them on. then fill and sand.
carl1967
when dry, sand to shape. where the windows meet the body, there is a gap on the nose roof, using PVA glue and a sharp knife, run PVA in to this gap, it drys good and can be painted over with most hobby paints. thats it for now carl
Mark 37
Great progress, I'm following with great interest and looking forward to painting the loco. I've held onto a Hornby RF split head and have been thinking what I can do with it. Sold all other DC locos ages ago and forgot about this one when we changed over to DCC, might give it a bash when I decide what livery I want. Great insperation. RMweb Gold Richard_A Posted May 7, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 7, 2011 The windows look great when i did mine i cut a groove in the bonnet top so I could slide the windows in, but I didnt think they looked right, as it is ive scrapped that body and I've started a fresh and I think I'll try your method of fitting them. carl1967
thanks for the comments after giving the cab roofs a good sanding with 1200s i gave it a cote of matt paint to show up anything i missed. after sanding the matt paint againe with 1200s i will add the cab roof detail. i have also added the nose grills and fan grill, i did not think i needed to show you how to stick them on , all the prep work was done and can be seen in last pics. next up is the rads

Mucky Duck
Interesting thread Carl… like the technique with the windscreens. I'll be watching with interest as I fancy doing one of these and a 'tractor'. Seems like Shawplan's the man for the bits!
