47901

Does anyone have a decent picture of the loco as 47601 which they could make available for a forthcoming book on the Class 47s? It is one Class 47 variation we have yet to source. If so please let me know asap. Everything has to be in by the end of the month.

Thanks

Simon

I'm starting to draw up the artwork for an etch for the roof. The A1 etch seems to have quite a few details missing, so it shouldn't be hard to produce something as good or better. The cantrail grilles look particularly crude as simple rectangular cut-outs. There must be a better way to produce these so they look more like "slats"?

Out of interest, in its 47601 guise, the roof was different again! In particular around the exhaust ports. You can see that quite clearly from this photo: http://www.railphotoprints.co.uk/index/detail/5175/47601-Tinsley-080178.jpg.html

It's on the departure side - presumably waiting to drop onto a train (because otherwise it's standing in the most awkward spot in the whole place :O - or was it being posed for the camera, Westbury Drivers were usually happy to do that if they had time).

Its just a snap of a loco doing what locos do. :locomotive:

I wonder if the owners of that farmhouse on the hill have any interest in the changing scene - we might like it but.... And behind them over the hill is a huge hole in the ground! http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=51.1955555556,-2.43638888889&spn=0.025,0.025&t=k

I'm sure I read a feature on 74 901 in either Model Rail Constructor or more likely Rail Enthusiast back in the 80s. Unfortunately I don't have my collection so can't have a search at the moment.

The September 2009 issue of Traction has a feature on 47901. I can scan and send if you wish, just pm me.

Didn't A1 do an etched roof panel for 47601 or is my memory playing tricks on me?

Digging up this old thread,Yes A1 models did &  I asked them for the roof to be made & convert my Hornby 47 to 47901, IIRC I still have the original prototype overlay & my 47 is still in running condition, I'd be happy to add some photo's if anyone wants to see it,

I'll have a look for it over the holiday break.

Here we go, photo's of my 47901 Hornby base delivered to me April 1995.very lightly weathered, just noticed it's lost some of the bufferbeam hoses, not a major problem..the small grilles above the crew door isn't fantastic, at the time it was far to small to make a decent version from brass etch, things have moved forward at lot since I had this converted, still my fav 47.

G'day to you all over there, I may be a bit late adding to this forum but I am just about to finish my model of 47901, I have used an unbranded Heljan 47 and some parts from an A1 detailing kit, you can't use the supplied replacement roof as a whole as it was designed to fit the Hornby 47 and is a bit small for the Heljan or Bachmann 47 so, a bit of nifty work with plasticard and filler is in order. The brass roof side grille replacements are also used, shawplan radiator grilles and sandboxes are also incorparated, another thing to note is that the bodyside window behind the drivers door on the non-radiator end has been platted over and a small grille has been added over each cab door on the drivers side.

There is also work to be done on the bogies and underframe and getting close up photos of this area is not easy!!

I shall post some photos soon showing the roof and underframe details a bit better.

Last but not least, I might add that I model mostly Scottish diesels so I have no idea why I modelled a loco that probably never went North of the border!!!

Good news it did make it north of the border.

Bad news it was a one way journey. It was scrapped at MC metals in Glasgow.

Well I finally finished the loco as previously stated it is based around a Heljan 47 using some parts from the A1 roof etch, let me explain, the A1 etch is designed to be used on the old Hornby 47 so when you offer it up to the Heljan 47's roof the etch is to small and dose not reach the gutter strips, so a bit of selective butchery is involved I ended up only using the centre exhaust section and the roof grilles all the rest is scratch built from plasticard.

The chassis received some upgrade with shawplan 57 sand boxes used and some pipe work etc added. It has had a bass reflex speaker installed in the fuel tank and the original pcb has been replaced with an ESU 21 pin adaptor pcb, the only thing its waiting for now is a class 58 sound chip when funds are available, but as I am modelling a layout based on Wick/Thurso I am not sure that this loco will get a lot of action, but as its my layout I suppose I can run what I like when nobodies looking!!!

For those interested in these grilles there's four currently listed on eBay

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F142959817764

There was five yesterday, but I've relieved them of one set.

Although 47/9 grilles I'm going to build 47 601 using a Vitrains as donor. I saw the prototype being built at Crewe in 1976. Was there much difference between 47 601 and 901 as regards to the roof layout?

Neil
