Painting a trio of Bachmann 0 Gauge RTR locos

I ordered the transfers for the large numbered 20008 shortly after Heljan announced their model, from Precision Transfers and they have been 'on file' waiting for the model ever since I received them. I recently did a swap - a 47 for a 20, but the 20 was Green!

So having studied photos of 20008, it seemed that the rear cab sheet was the only area that needed the knife - the centre white lights - top and bottom had to be removed, as well as all of the route discs and their associated clips etc. The only 'addition' was a plate fitted between the cab windows, finishing just below the cill line.

Then it was a question of spraying the yellow ends and masking off for the blue when it had dried

Then the transfers were applied, the cab windows re-fitted - the rubber seals around the front and rear windows which are moulded on the window were picked out in black with a CD writer pen and all of the handrails refitted, with the vertical section of the main rail 'straightened' to the vertical. Then the weathering was applied via Railmatch Frame and Roof, followed by a wash of thinners when nearly dry and then Tamiya weathering blocks used to pick out further detail.

all in all a satisfactory 'conversion' of a loco that I first saw it at 1D - Devons Road, Bow, when it was brand new in October 1957.

Hi lee,

glad you like it. Yes it's Railmatch enamel - all I ever use through the airbrush, including the intial weathering colours, then it's the Tamiya weathering blocks to bring out the detail

cheers

Mike, did you find a 'Crab' with a full red bufferbeam as per some Scots? All the pictures I've seen show the usual treatment for a split beam ie: a black band above the red bufferbeam

Hi Coachman,

I fell into the trap of being 'unfamiliar' with the loco (coming from Southern territory) and accepting what was presented to me - a one piece buffer beam as opposed to the two pice on the actual locos, and automatically painting it red, despite haveing a reasonable selection of photographs of 42700 and 'not seeing what was in front of me! Having now looked at the model again, I do not think that the beam is capable of having a black section as the overall depth appears to be too narrow to take it.

Many thanks for pointing out the error - it will hopefully teach me to check photographs in more detail in the future.

cheers

the crab looks excellent, what did you use for the lining?

Hi Richard,

many thanks for your kind comment.

The lining is HMRS Pressfix - using the predrawn corners for the cab sheet and the tender sides, all of the remaining lining is applied as a single line, as the boiler bands as fitted are too narrow to accept the double reds and none of the predrawn curves are suitable for the valances. The valance lining was applied in short lengths and 'coaxed' around the curves until I was happy with them. I had cut them as close as possible to the colour on the sheet, especially the grey as you can hardly see it through the carrier film while you are positioning it and as there was no carrier on the edge, I was able to line the edge up with the valance edge as a 'starter for ten'.

The loco was sprayed with a couple of coats of Railmatch satin varnish which had had a few drops of weathered black added, just to take down the satin a touch.

cheers

Hi Coachman,

I was browsing through some old magazines at the Club last night and came across an article in the January 1993 issue of Steam Days entitled North Wales Branches - Part 1 Chester to Llandudno by C J Gammell, which includes a colour photo from the J Spencer-Gilks/Colour-Rail collection of 42942 on an LCGB tour over the Rhyl to Denbigh line on 24th September 1966 in open countryside near Rhuddlan, clearly showing an all red buffer beam.

If you send me a PM with your email address, I'll forward a copy.

cheers

Mike
