German railways

As I have been to Germany a few times either in the car or in the train, I thought that there should be a thread for everyone to add a selection of prototype photos. The last trip I had was a full 2 weeks by rail from Leeds earlier this year with a full day break in Hamburg spent at Minatur Wunderland!

A small selection of mine follow.

When I was there (Harz) in 2008 the autumnal colours were terefic. This year when I went I made sure that I did the complete system by steam. It involved getting back into Quedlinburg at about 19:15 but as I like to do some night photography got a few shots (resting on a fence as a tripod).

This year I booked tickets through Festiniog Travel from Leeds to Koln and then had an Interrail ticket. On the Harz you can get 3 and 5 day tickets that cost not much more than fares up the Brocken section of the system.

Hello,

I show you some pictures of the bridge over the river Main at Volkach. The bridge is a Roth-Wagner Bridge, and it is one of the last combined road - railway bridges in Germany of these type in Germany. Unfortunatly only road vehicles are nowadays allowed to use the bridge and

by the end of these years it will be demolished. But one of the bridgeheads will remain, and would be used my the heritage railway Mainschleifenbahn. http://www.mainschleifenbahn.de

I hope to built a model in N scale someday.

My wife and I first visited Germany in 1990. We discovered the Harz line by chance; we went to Wernigerode just to see what East Germany was like. We have been back on quite a number of occasions over the years. The Harz has improved as a tourist line, but it's lost a lot of the gritty atmosphere of a working railway.

In 1992 we wnt up to Bad Doberan; the only time we've been there.

Hello there,

The other day I reorganised some of my Flickr sets, and as I now have a dedicated "German Trains" set I thought I'd post a link to it here. It is: here

At present the only photos in it are from a trip to Berlin last winter; mostly of the Deutsches Technikmuseum, with a few others of random trains around Berlin. In a few days I'll start posting a wider variety of stuff from earlier this month, albeit still largely from Berlin: the U-Bahn and S-Bahn museums, the Berliner Eisenbahnfest from the other weekend, and a few from the Berliner Parkeisenbahn.

Something a bit different from a couple of years ago.

2km long, 600mm gauge line at Stassfurt for the sodaworks. Standard gauge fireless locos work within the complex itself, and one was visible when I was there, but I was unable to get a phot.

Some pics of mine from earlier this year, all were taken at Hamburg Hbf.

That is stunning!

I saw the coaches for this at Köln on my recent visit, my mate identified them as I would have never known. If memory serves, they were now in the white (IC) livery. Pity this service isn't running anymore.

I understand you could get this train in H0 but it was very, very expensive, ouch!

Pröst!

LS Models are due to bring out the loco and a complete set of coaches during 2013.

They are also planning to do the coaches in the now current ICE livery, too

Ah yes, the Metropolitan... These sets have been reformed several times, but are now back to two seven-coach formations. However, they still require one of the four 101s to have been fitted with the required additional on-board systems for full functionality. These would be 101 124, 126, 130 and 131. Any other locos can stand in as replacements as well, but various systems and functions such as air conditioning, automated brake check and the specialised door locking subsystem cannot be controlled from the loco in this case. Aside from 101s, 103s and 120s have been working ex-MET formations on occasion.

As it turns out I apparently took a photo of one of those trainsets entirely by accident, last September.

This was heading north through Bacharach, between Bingen and Koblenz, and the loco on the back was 101 056.

Edit: bah, it isn't one of those, is it.  The doors are different.  My knowledge is sorely lacking.

Yes, this is a normal InterCity set.

Those long-distance control cars are a reconstruction from ex-DR coaches which did take place between 1995 and 1998. There are actually two types of cars which differs in the windows at least, the ex-IR (Interregio) control cars just had the control end added as opposed to the original IC (InterCity) control cars just used the underframe of those ex-DR coaches. I think your photo shows an original IC control car. The Interregio services were discontinued after 2006 and slowly ex-IR stock is phased out.

Here's a couple of pictures from last year of an ex Metropolitan set on an ICE-ersatz working to Leipzig (ICE 1107 from Hamburg), in the lower levels of Berlin Hauptbahnhof.  Note that the loco is one of the ones Dominik mentions, being 101 124.  This combination gives the train a maximum speed of 220kph, so it does have an edge over regular IC trains.

Re the Metropolitan stock - MC Hünerbein of Aachen are advertising LS Models as producing two packs for a 7 coach N-gauge rake in addition to the previously mentioned HO version...

DB also market these trains as ICEs, although they are of course loco hauled.... fernbahn.de shows currently ICE1000, 1003, 1004, 1005, 1008 and 1009 are all services formed of 101+Metropolitan stock, on the Munich-Berlin route via Jena...
