My 'alma mater' - Cantonian H.S. Cardiff was located alongside the Penarth Harbour & Dock Line between Radyr and Cardiff, between the present Waun-gron Parc and Fairwater stations, the nearest railway landmark being Waterhall Jct (one of two in S.Wales).

.

At lunchtime we'd adjourn to the South Wales main line near the former Ely (Main Line) station.

Well it was yesterday actually (26th Feb). On 26th Feb 1975 a class 25 and a BR inspection coach (steam heated!) were the last railborne vehicles to go out and back to Ilfracombe - nearly 5 years after the last passenger train.

All of the class 15 locomotives seen would be withdrawn en mass one year later in March 1971 with the exception of 8215 which was condemned in December 1970. Also of note is the lack of any class 83/84 locomotives which at this point of time were all being stored awaiting modification. This was also the first time I had seen class 31’s at Old Oak Common which were just being transferred in as replacements for the class 22 locomotives and later the class 35’s.

A number of the above locomotives were photographed later in their careers and can be seen in this collection.

Cardiff to Bristol

Saturday 4th. March, 1972

The intention was to ‘bunk’ Marsh Jct. for the remaining stored ‘Warships’ and North British “six-three-ersâ€.

By this time 15 Hymeks had also been consigned to store there, displaced by the increasing numbers of BR Sulzer Type 2s (Cl.25) and Bruch Type 2s (Cl.31) several of the former being sighted at Newport and STJ with a number of the latter at Bath Rd.

By now we were used to the sight of Cl.25s in South Wales as they’d first arrived in late October 1970 – but Cl.31 5842 at Canton was a turn up, and a ‘cop’ for yours truly.

At least one hundred and twenty one locomotives in an area that thirty five years later you would be lucky to find five operational locomotives. Things to note are the abundance of class 25’s, (Tinsley had a batch of class 25/0’s on allocation at this time) and 3035 and 3037 which had been withdrawn the previous December and would be converted unsuccessfully into snowploughs ADB966508 and ADB966510 respectively, both broken up in 1979

A number of the above locomotives were photographed later in their careers and can be seen in this collection.

A day late posting, sorry: March 6th 1966. Crewe trip and Crewe works. I was only 14, and have lost my notebooks from that era, so remember very little except seeing Duke of Gloucester waiting for scrap, or preservation, outside the paintshops at Crewe works, and long lines of Britannias at Crewe South.

On this day in History - Day Excursion to Plymouth - 11th March 1972

One way in the early 1970’s of travelling to interesting railway destinations on the cheap was to become a Notts County Football Club supporter for the day and use their football special train (Footex). Being in the old Division 3 at this time meant little risk of football hooligans and some interesting railway destinations. On this day thirty eight years ago Notts County played Plymouth away and I used the Magpies Footex for a trip to the South West and back with traction being provided by Peak 95 and in lieu of the match a bus ride/walk out to Laira MPD. Result of the match was a 1-1 draw.

Nottingham – Plymouth

Class 03 (2123), class 08 (3057, 3112/67, 3248, 3345/90, 3505/13/17, 3785, 3808, 4004/22, 4121/23/49/60/67/73/85), class 20 (8069/72), class 25 (5225/29/32/36/67, 7519/23/29/36, 7603/25/26/28), class 31 (5562, 5636, 5824), class 33 (6506/16/24), class 35 (7004/07/09/12/45/74), class 42 (813/24/66), class 44 (2/8), class 45 (16/23/30/47/59/69/75/85/88/94/95, 107/11/15/22/26/29), class 46 (156/62), class 47 (1540/44/83/99, 1603/08/23/33/75, 1740, 1805/33/54, 1910), Steam (46201), PWM652.

On yesterday in history:

Barrow Hill (hi Brother Merv! - this was at your gaff 24 years ago yesterday, 22/03/86)

08436, 20031+20144, 47301, 56063/90/102, 58040

Shirebrook

Toton (a big shout out to our guitarist who's dog walking on Toton hill at this very moment, reliving those days of his youth when 44s were ticking-over below...)

08623/702, 20004, 25032/72/151/209, 37170, ADB968024 (aka 45017), 45020/65/125, 47294, 56042/70, 58005/11/30

Derby

LHCS 17173/75 - two of the three brand new MkIII BFOs unless I'm very much misshapen

20049, 97201, 31145/89/453

And on this day in history:

23/3/79, GENERATION X release 'Valley Of The Dolls' and SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES 'The Staircase (Mystery)'

23/3/81, THE STRANGLERS 'Just Like Nothing On Earth'

23/3/89, 47653 hauled my outward commute between Tamworth and Derby (0715?)

23/3/90, 43018+43007 outward commute Tamworth - Derby (XC pool based at Laira?), and I think 53512+53934 return (1745?), which sounds highly rateable!

Totally enjoying this thread.

You certainly got about, John, what were you doing for a living at that time, if you don't mind me asking?

1969 - 1974 the period I still have my note books from I was still at school. I wish I still had my note books from 1966 - 1969 but I seem to have lost those over the years. I went on some cracking days out in 1967/68 and saw a lot of diesels that did'nt make it into the 1970's. In October 1974 (aged 18) I joined British Rail in the signalling design office at Nottingham and my interest switched from number taking to the photography

Hi,

Absolutely fascinating thread this one.

Turning this one round a bit. Can I make a request for visit reports based around the OTDIH approach?

What I'm interested in is whether anyone has any reports for Glasgow Works and/or Eastfield depot any time in the period between 9th April (1972) and 14th May (1972). Not far into the future so could fit the OTDIH model.

Thanks for any help.

Cheers, Tony.

  • RMweb Gold

A couple of days from 1976.

It was Easter holiday and I spent most of my time at Bristol Parkway (see the same thread in RMweb3).

Tuesday 6th April 1976

37 075/224/297, 45 022/029/047/053/059/110, 47 111/236/241/475/478/479/483/497/499/510/540, 50 041 Class 120 W50668-W59275-W50721

Wednesday 7th April 1976

20 031/051, 25 052, 37 117, 45 025/027/066, 46 013/038, 47 013/077/101/110/151/190/493/499/504/509/512, 50 042, D1022 Western Sentinel, D1065 Western Consort

Notes - The HSTs were to arrive later that year and the South Wales-London expresses were still firmly in the hands of Landore 47/4s. Treated to some rarities on these two days - the pair of 20s were on an Avonmouth bound freight and these were incredibly rare in the Bristol area, even more so the fact that they were Immingham based. 50 041 was one of the last LMR based 50s to arrive on the WR (normally recognisable by the fact that they had two BR arrows at cab ends rather than the WR norm of positioning them amidships). They normally worked a 1VXX express from Birmingham to Plymouth on their first WR duty. It must have arrived on the 6th as it was a cop for the "round Parkway" collection. Split-box 37s were also uncommon in the 1970s around Bristol and the appearance of two on consectutive days was good news. The Westerns were thinning out a bit, but still pleasing to see, but still in 1976 thought that they would be around for a long time- alas we were wrong. D1065 in particular refused to die and was in a very tired state when she was retired later that year. It's interesting also to note the lack of named locos- only 45 022/059 and 47 077 at this time (plus the Westerns).

On this Day in History – Derby Works – 8th April 1973.

Thirty seven years ago I had a tour round the now closed and demolished Derby Locomotive Works which produced the following:

class 03 (2381/87), class 08 (3009/34/92/94/98, 3100/07, 3587, 3695, 3765/79, 3856, 3909/12/36/88, 4000, 4149), class 17 (8598), class 20 (8016/29/40/59, 8123/35/36, 8308), class 24 (5025/49/55/57/85), class 25 (5160, 5201/22/84/89, 7539/42/43/50/70/95, 7625/54), class 27 (5349/91), class 40 (242), class 44 (3), class 45 (19/43/59/67/72/86, 106, 45101/03), class 46 (160/71/83).

Steam: 4472 Flying Scotsman, 45690 Leander, 47357.

Locomotives of note were ex Southern Region class 08’s 3092/94/98 and 3100 which were withdrawn and were about to undergo an overhaul having been sold for export to a Liberian company, LAMCo. Class 08, 3034 withdrawn from Tinsley in November 1972 and used for spares for the LAMCo class 08’s, broken up at Derby in November 1973. Class 24, 5049 which had been involved in an accident at Kidsgrove when the No2 end cab was crushed back to the bulkhead with the bulkhead bent backwards into the boiler compartment. The repair resulted in 5049 gaining a new cab with the later style roof mounted headcode box.

Also of note is the commencement of the class 45 electric train heating equipment fitment with 45101, 45103, 45104 (59), 45105 (86), 45106 (106) and 45107 (43) all present. Where was 45102?

Finally there were three steam locomotives under repair, 4472 Flying Scotsman which had run under its own power from Edge Hill after returning from spending four years in America, Stanier Jubilee 45690 Leander being repaired and repainted prior to moving to the Dinting Railway Centre and Fowler Jinty tank 47357 destined for the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley.
