Nice to see this thread make the quantum leap to the new RMweb.

I'm very interested in the TOPS renumbering period 1973-1975, and note that the early 45/1s here were among the first to go due to the ETH fitting programme, it was rather bizarre that the 45s were also last to be renumbered some lasting until late 1975

That's because they were numbered as they went through works overhaul. Looking at the dates of renumbering you see that the first twenty three 45/0s were renumbered at the same time as the first 45/1s. Then they decided that every 45 needing an overhaul was going to be made a 45/1 so any locos not due one remained in the original numbers. After the last 45/1 number was allocated the remainder of the 45s were numbered in order as 45/0s. This isn't quite true as 45150 was renumbered from a 45/0 for some reason that escapes me.

This Day in History ??“ Half Term ??“ 28/29/30th October 1969

Its half term week and I am off school forty years ago. It must have been a bit of an ???Indian Summer??? weather wise that week as for three consecutive days I am on my push bike to Lenton South Junction for a day watching the trains go bye, this is what I observed over those three days:

Class 20 (8001/08/13/17/34/37/39/60/67/70/75, 8112/14/37/41/54/55/63/64/67/68/69/71/76/81/85/87/90/99), class 25 (5238/39, 7504/08, 7652/58), class 31 (5523/46, 5809), class 44 (4), class 45 (17/20/24/32/35/37/38/44/46/51/52/62/73/86/87, 107/25/35), class 46 (147/61), class 47 (1556/97, 1649, 1806/29/49, 1945/83)

Of note is the dominance of the class 20 on the substantial colliery traffic, the rapid loading bunkers and MGR wagons were still a number of years away from most of the Nottinghamshire collieries at this point in time and the dominance of the Peaks on the express passenger traffic. Of course in those days the St Pancras ??“ Sheffield service use to alternate via Derby or Nottingham and of course via Nottingham required a change of engine, thus increasing the number of Peaks you would see.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

Not sure of the exact date, just "October 1972" so I've left it until the last but one day of the month.

A run down of all South Wales allocated shunters in October, 1972 and where they were to be found.

On this Day in History ??“ Sheffield/Manchester 31st October 1969.

On this day forty years ago I ventured from Nottingham to Manchester. However the route I took was not via the Hope Valley but via Woodhead. In 1969 there was still a passenger service from Sheffield Victoria to Manchester Piccadilly. The first part of the journey was by class 114 DMU (E56049) from Nottingham to Sheffield Midland. After a walk to Sheffield Victoria the second part was behind class 76 electric (E 26056 Triton). The following were observed on the journey: class 04 (2218), class 08 (3025/39/44, 3336/45, 3405, 3696, 3700/65/68/79, 3997), class 20 (8006/10/35/67/75, 8139/40/56/61/69/70/71/83/85/86/94/96), class 25 (5280, 7508), class 31 (5542/54, 5849), class 37 (6707, 6803/05), class 40 (236/69/91), class 45 (28, 103/16), class 46 (157/61/87), class 47 (1522/41, 1825), class 76 (E26002/13/15/16/20/29/31/34/37/45/47/49/52/54/55/56). At Manchester a trip out to Reddish (by class 104 M50532 and return by M50536) followed and the following were observed on the journey: class 08 (3694, 3766, 3988, 4145), class 25 (5248), class 37 (6806), class 40 (232/95, 374/78), class 45 (54), class 76 (E26000/50), class 81 (E3010/11), class 85 (E3075), class 86 (E3165/80). Reddish MPD contained: class 25 (5273, 7640), class 40 (241, 300), class 47 (1962), class 76 (E26002/07/10/11/17/21/23/32/49/53). The run back to Nottingham was by the Harwich Boat Train from Manchester to Sheffield Victoria behind class 37 (6806), Sheffield Midland to Derby behind class 46 (151) and Derby to Nottingham by class 104 DMU (50502), the following were observed on the journey: class 04 (2253), class 08 (3071, 3784), class 24 (5036), class 25 (5292, 7505/11/19/46), class 37 (6719), class 40 (204/21), class 45 (23/40, 120), class 46 (151/59/76/81), class 47 (1575, 1614, 1853), class 76 (E26009/15/18/31), class 85 (E3062). Items of note are the original class 76 locomotive E26000 Tommy which was built by the LNER in 1941 which as I saw it at Manchester Piccadilly was probably on passenger duties that day. E26000 would be withdrawn within six months in March 1970 along with E26017 seen at Reddish. Class 04 2218 which had been withdrawn in August 1968 (allocated to Crewe) and was broken up in January 1970 by a Chesterfield scrap merchant and so was probably seen in the scrap yard as we past. Class 04 2253 which had been withdrawn in March 1969 (allocated to Allerton) and was broken up in December 1969 by G Cohen at Kettering so was probably seen staged at Derby on its last journey. Finally twenty eight of the fifty eight class 76 were seen in the day.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection.

NOTE the presence of Cl.40 (or more locally 'bucket' ) 369, this arrived on a winter dated Guide Bridge - cardiff parcels working, which IIRC commenced on 1st. November and ran until 24th. December, arriving in Cardiff General around 5.00pm.

.

The WR had started painting set numbers on the front of DMU sets, and prefixed the Cross Country units with a Divisional letter eg L=London, B=Bristol, P=Plymouth and C=Cardiff.

.

The Cardiff suburban sets initially had the set number applied but not the prefix as they were more localised in their duties than the Cross Country units.

.

An exception appeared to be the Canton 'bubble cars' which gained a prefix earlier eg 55026 initially carried just 126, then C126 - as they were used on the North & West route between Cardiff - Crewe coupled to one or two Cl.120 swindon Cross Country units. The bubble cars were locked out of use and were used solely for additional power.

On this Day in History ??“ Day Excursion to Swansea - 4th November 1972

One way in the early 1970??™s of travelling to interesting railway destinations on the cheap was to become a Notts County Football Club supporter for the day and use their football special train (Footex). Being in the old Division 3 at this time meant little risk of football hooligans and some interesting railway destinations. On this day thirty seven years ago Notts County played Swansea away and I used the the Magpies Footex for a trip to South Wales and back with traction being provided by Peak 51 and in lieu of the match a walk out to Landore MPD. Result of the match was a win for Swansea 3-0.
