A day late- but a day of dental trauma yesterday intervened.

Saturday 12th April 1975 - Merrymaker trip to York

Bristol Parkway 46 001/015. Gloucester 25 145/205, 37 192, 47 447. Saltley 25 106/130/204, 47 138. Burton on Trent 20 005/038/131/136/138/160/194/199. Derby 08 455/590, 20 176, 45 047. York Station 45 016, 46 010, 47 550. York Depot 03 075/172/371, 08 062/245, 31 144/228, 37 015/031/111/114/221, 40 028/051/057/067/070/078/080/083/173, 46 035, 47 134/432/520/544 with 47 373, 55 006/010/015/022 passing. York station 08 540/559/769, 31 176/211, 37 005/071/094/107/305, 40 112/122, 45 019/063/133/143, 46 045/055, 47 365/418/459/460/523/551, 55 001-004/015/019. Derby 08 899 Burton on Trent 20 186, 47 381. Saltley 25 100/276/277, 47 214. Bristol Parkway 47 491.

Rather simplistic day to York and back which included the first time to recently opened NRM. We also managed to get a guided tour around York depot which included an engine room walk through and trip back down the yard in 40 070. Now THAT was impressive and very memorable, a cab ride in a whistler. We also saw ten Deltics in traffic in one afternoon, so really the golden age of diesel traction back in 1975. I must have lost some numbers as there are some mysterious omissions (for example where were the electrics at Birmingham?). Occasionally these tours would bypass BNS, perhaps that was one such day, but just can't remember.

Nottingham – Leeds (71), Leeds – Glasgow (24)

Class 08 (3029, 3169/70/73, 3293/95, 3363/90, 3561/64, 3768, 4141/56), class 20 (8034/87), class 25 (5197, 5229/41/62/66/79/84/88, 7544/72/79, 7604/12), class 37 (6763, 6818/44), class 40 (211/90, 301/76/90), class 45 (15/24/57/71/98, 110), class 47 (1541, 1621/27/33/73, 1788/92, 1828/82, 1965), class50 (414/19/37/40/44)

Glasgow Queen Street:

Class 24 (5126), class 26 (5331), class 27 (5352/80, 5400/01/04)

Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh (5401/04):

Edinburgh – Aberdeen (364):

Class 06 (2426/37/38), class 08 (3560, 3739, 3879/93), class 20 (8004/10, 8317), class 24 (5069/95), class 25 (7578/81), class 26 (5306/17/21), class 27 (5367/74/91, 5407/11), class 40 (259/60, 364), class 47 (1766, 1975)

Aberdeen:

Class 08 (3558)

Inverness MPD:

Class 08 (3735, 3787), class 24 (5117/18/24/26/29), class 26 (5310/25/31/35/36/40/46)

Locomotives of note: Class 29 6130 had been withdrawn the previous October and was dumped along with 6100/03/07/13/14/16/32 next to Cowlairs signal box opposite Eastfield MPD awaiting the final tow to Glasgow works for breaking up. Class 06 shunters 2424 and 2438 would both be withdrawn in November 1972. Class 24 5114 would be withdrawn in October 1972.

Also of note is how dependant the Scottish Region were at this time on Sulzer type 2 power (supplemented by English Electric type 4) for its internal passenger workings. And finally a reminder that at this point in time class 50’s were regular visitors as for north as Perth (402/36).

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

May 3rd 1830, Opening of the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway.

Today is the 180th anniversary of regular steam-hauled passenger services -- note, words chosen with care, for loco-hauled we need to wait a few months longer

This Day in History – 16A, 16C and 16F – 9th May 1971

On this day thirty nine years ago it was a lovely spring day and I was out on my push bike for a tour of some “local†establishments. This is what I saw on my fifty mile plus cycle ride:

Toton (16A)

Class 08 (3039/44/56/58, 3249, 3345, 3400), class 20 (8009/13/15/35/36/81/72/99, 8111/15/34/35/55/60/70/73/80/85/86), class 25 (5230, 7521/58/60, 7617), class 45 (11/46/55/57/63/65/77/83/89, 115/26), class 47 (1713,1801/05/15),

Derby (16C)

Class 03 (2386/88), class 08 (3180/86, 3789), class 25 (5250), class 45 (36, 110/18), class 46 (140), class 47 (1989).

Burton Wagon Works

Class 08 (3050)

Burton (16F)

Class 08 (3025/59/82, 3790), class 20 (8003/12/62/67/77/88/98, 8137/41/42/45/51/57/61/63/65/74/81/82/89/94/98), class 25 (7509/59, 7604), class 47 (1825)

Of note is that despite seeing forty six locomotives at Toton I failed to get all the way round the shed, which explains the lack of any class 44’s. Also you can see the decline of Burton on Trent as a railway centre, in 1971 the collieries, yards and sidings in the Burton - Coalville area could support at least six Burton allocated class 08 pilots and also eleven pairs of class 20’s plus a class 47 (outstationed from Toton) for South Leicestershire coalfield colliery trip workings

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

Neil

Just seen this: We went on a few Merrymakers from Scunthorpe in Humberside, as was, in the early 70's, a few of which went through Birmingham. They ALWAYS took the avoiding line at Saltley, usually waiting at signals there for a crew change. If you were lucky you saw the occasional electric pass overhead, and once a Western coming off New street in the dark, heading to Saltley. It was a warm night and we had stood for ages, but we had powerful torches so the Western was captured for posterity.

What sticks in my mind is staring out of the carriage windows in the vestibule, window down, hoping something would come before we moved off. We heard the Western coming well before we saw it. Been to Cardiff, IIRC.

The neon sign, "Landore Street Carpets" also sticks in my mind for some reason. Wonder if they still exist?

Funny, the trips always came from Cleethorpes, and featured an Immingham crew to start with, but were almost always a 45, none of which were allocated to Immingham.

On this day in History – Loughborough – 22nd May 1974

A push bike ride to Loughborough and a day watching the traffic.

08471, 20040/44/84, 20158, 25033, 25120, 25212/45/64, 25325, 31237, 44002/03/05/10, (class 45) 45/60/63/88/95/97, 100/04/09/10/30/36, 45003, 45105/07/14/21/25, 46015/28, 47135, 47200/48, 47336, 47454, (class 53) 1200

Of note are 08471 which would have been part of a freight train consist making its way to/from Derby works, no road in those days and 1200 Falcon, the Brush prototype engine sitting in the yard at Loughborough, had British Rail forgotten that in the 1970’s and 1980’s there was no rail connection into the Brush works? It had returned to the Western Region on my next visit six days later.

On this day in History - Toton – 24th May 1969.

It’s a Saturday morning so its out with the push bike for a twenty mile round trip to Toton to see what was about.

Class 08 (3056/59, 3174, 3362/63, 3400/04, 3996, 4145), class 20 (8013/47/59/62/69/91, 8136/39/40/43/44/47/49/54/55/58/70/73/78/81/83/87/88/92), class 25 (7524), class 37 (6814, 6939), class 44 (1/5/9/10), class 45 (21/33/39/45/47/56/62/64/91, 101/03/05/06), class 47 (1628, 1701, 1823/24/25/29).

Of note is the virtual lack of type 2 power, very strange and class 08’s, 3174 and 4145 which were not locals (3174 was I think at this time a Holyhead engine and 4145 was a Longsight engine) and I assume were on transfer to/from Derby works. In those days class 08’s were transferred between sheds and works usually via class 8 or 9 freight trains which abounded and who’s speed was slow enough not to be an issue.

I seem to have had a strange day regarding “shed bashing†as I obviously failed to get round Birkenhead (which in my experience was usually easy to get round) and succeeded in getting round both Allerton and Longsight (which in my experience were usually difficult to get round).

Locomotives of note were Derby allocated class 03’s 2130, 2381 and 2388 which would all be withdrawn in the following three months (August, June and July respectively) and two (2130, 2388) would cease to exist within ten months being broken up by CF Booth, Rotherham in March 1973, 2381 survives today in preservation at Carnforth

On this Day in History - Colwick – 1st June 1969

In the latter half of the 1960’s I used to cycle out from Clifton to the large Great Northern Railway MPD on the eastern outskirts of Nottingham at Colwick (16B) By this time its once large allocation was down to a few diesel shunters with its main line fleet being provided almost exclusively by Toton. I still have the log for my visit on the 1st June 1969 shortly before its final closure with the locomotives then being fuelled at Nottingham and stabled in and around the carriage sidings and London Road Parcels depot. On shed on this day were:

Class 08 (3403/07/25/26, 3790), class 20 (8013/16/40/61/63/65/67, 8137/39/41/58/60/62/68/70/74/78/84/91/93/96/97/98), class 31 (5629) and class 47 (1808).

It’s a sign of the scale of the decline of the coal traffic around Nottingham that in 1969 the local collieries (Linby, Annesley, Newstead, Hucknall, Babbington, Calverton, Gedling and Cotgrave, plus Staythorpe power station could provide employment for eleven pairs of class 20’s and one class 47. All these pits and the power station have all closed since 1969.
