On this Day in History - Cardiff – 6th August 1970

The family holiday in 1970 was to Barry Island, South Wales The family holiday was the one time in the year that I would have a day out on the railways with my Dad in tow. He was not the slightest bit interested in railways but always felt that this was the time to take a more direct interest in my hobby and spend a day with his son. The year before it was a day on the Ffestiniog Railway and this year I had already dragged him round the graveyard of steam before we had a day out to Cardiff and this is what we saw that day.

Barry – Cardiff

Class 08 (3759, 4012), class 35 (7095), class 37 (6881), class 45 (127)

Cardiff Canton MPD (86A)

Class 08 (3256/68, 3429, 3749, 3807/16/17/18, 4011), class 14 (9509/19/35), class 35 (7055/56/57/69/76/81/83/87/88/94), class 37 (6606, 6875, 6976/81/94), class 47 (1583/90, 1830, 1907/23/34/35), class 52 (1069)

Cardiff General

Class 08 (3261), class 35 (7007/67/92/96), class 37 (6885, 6909/70/75/77/78/82/95), class 46 (150), class 47 (1591, 1600/65/68), class 43 (855), class (1004/25/38).

Cardiff – Barry

Class 35 (7078), class 47 (1901/04/15/19).

Locomotives of note are the three class 14’s which had all been withdrawn almost two years previously in October 1968 (9509/19) and December 1969 (9535). 9509/19 would not survive much longer as within three months they had been towed to G Cohen’s yard at Kettering and broken up in November 1970. 9535 was sold to the National Coal Board for further use in the North East and would survive until January 1984.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

On this day, Wed 6 Aug 1980,

Strood, 0840-0930

33206 on presflos, a coal hopper and an engineers' open (probably Hoo Jn-Tonbridge via Halling cement works)

47236 on Allington-Westbury PGAs

73128 light engine

lots of china clay opens (OWV and UCV) in the yard.

Rochester 1000-1115

33209 on MCVs (probably scrap empties from Sheerness)

73001 light engine

47076 on unidentified down passenger special, Mk2bs I think with a buffet and first class (it returned in the evening, 15 mins after 47066 on a rake of Mk1s)

73115 with parcels/paper vans including the returning BSK off the approx 0300 Victoria-Ramsgate papers (available for passengers on the down journey). Also including 2 SNCF ferry vans.

A few CCT parcel vans in the yard.

And the usual fare of EMUs. All the above pretty normal for then, although 47s on excursions/specials were more common at weekends, and getting Mk2s on an excursion/special wasn't usual.

On this day in History - Stoke/Crewe Works– 17th August 1969

On this day forty one years ago I paid a visit to Stoke and Crewe. At Stoke locomotives were stabled at Cockshute and on shed were four class 08’s (3291/92, 3798, 3801), eleven class 24’s (5011/20/23/27/33/44/49/63/76/86/92) and one class 25 (5237). Later a tour around Crewe Works produced three class 08’s (3068/95, 3217), one class 11 (12062), four class 20’s (8061/67, 8188, 8303), three class 25’s (7555/61, 7627), thirteen class 40’s (218/39/42/45/73/75/77/81/88, 345/52/64/94), thirty four class 47’s (1501/02/05/06/08/09/10/14/17/28/29/48, 1617/48/77/84/87, 1701/02/12/32/39/44/50/60, 1811/12/58/63/86, 1919/37/60/83), one class 50 (400), three class 73’s (E6012/13/25), one class 74 (E6109), five class 76’s (E26006/16/23/28/48), one class 82 (E3050), one class 84 (E3045), one class 85 (E3077) and four class 86’s (E3111/13/52/93).

Of note is the variety of classes under repair at Crewe works including Southern Region electro-diesels and the Manchester – Sheffield dc electrics which were repaired at Crewe following the closure of Gorton works in the mid 1960’s. Also of note is the large number of the first batch of class 47’s (nine out of twenty). After six years in traffic were they due there first general repair? Finally 12062 would be withdrawn eight months later in April 1970 and was broken up at Derby works in December 1971.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

TOPS renumbering was getting underway, initially effecting Cl.45 and the AC electrics.

Eight of the Cl.44s were at Toton.

Note the number of Cl.20s, once the D16 area staple, where did Stourbridge Jct. Westhouses, Mantle Lane all go ???????.

Brian / br2975 - Mantle Lane is still there, the box is still open so we can run round trains at Bardon Hill! Alas Coalville Depot as it was is no longer there of course, but there's talk of our mob opening up a satallite depot there. It's been a bit on / off but it would make more sense to put a fulling point back in there as the present site at Bardon is a little cramped.

All those D and E numbers in your post conjure up some wonderful images.. likewise with John's list of goodies seen at Dawlish cool.gif

August 25 1966. A friend was leaving to hitch to London. I was going to take him to Hamilton to start from there, and we went round some scrap yards in Lanarkshire, and Motherwell shed, on the way.

J. McWilliam & Sons,Shettleston:

Stanier 5 - 44692/44908

Y9 - 68095

Clan - 72006

Class 08 - D3894

As you can see, 68095 made it as far as the scrapyard before it was bought for preservation. I can’t remember what the diesel shunter was doing here – perhaps it had just delivered some of the steam engines.

P.&W.McLellan, Langloan:

Fairburn tank - 42195/42197/42260

Stanier 5 - 45389

A3 - 60052

Standard 5 - 73055/73057

I missed a chance of buying a smokebox plate here. There were two available – one off an A3 and one from a Fairburn tank. However, the foreman wasn’t around, we didn’t have time to wait for him and nobody else was prepared to sell me one because they didn’t know what the asking price was. Funnily enough, if I had been able to buy one and had been forced to choose (I didn’t have much money on me) I would have taken the Fairburn plate. It would have meant more to me, and I certainly couldn’t foresee the prices certain plates would attract now.

Motherwell shed:

Ivatt 4 mogul - 43036

Stanier 5 - 44786/44850/44880/44881/45176

Standard 5 - 73107/73154

Standard 4 mogul - 76000

Class 08 - D3205/D3286

Class 17 - D8501/D8508/D8533

43036 was on the way to Motherwell Machinery & Scrap for breaking up.

Wishaw: Stanier 5 - 45126

Motherwell Machinery & Scrap:

Standard 5 - 73005/73063

9F - 92130

From the previous post, it appears we were out in force in 1972 !!!!

.

Brian R

.

Saturday 26th. August, 1972 - a day trip by several Cardiff based ‘spotters’ to the annual Derby Works Open Day.

The large number of ‘spotters’ attending would mean that ‘bunking’ Toton would be nigh on impossible, so we decided to retrace our steps and ‘bunk’ Bescot and saltley instead.

With hindsight some of the highlights of the day would include

(a) the prototype HST and APT-E alongside each other,

(B) Departmental Cl.28 Metrovick S15705 on the works.

© 2-Bil 2037 outside the Derby Research Centre.

(d) Two Cl.11 shunters lurking inside the steam shed at Bescot.

(e) My first sighting of TOPS numbered locos 83012 & 84008 at Bescot.

(f) 1200 ‘Falcon’ was still a regular sight at Ebbw Jct.

(g) The variety in mis-formed Tyseley DMU sets, for those who can still differentiate the various types from their numbers they will know what I mean.

Well at least three of us at Derby on that grey day in 1972, 177 was my very last peak for sight still remember her now proudly standing outside the works. A lot of the Cabbed © entries at the end of the Derby Works lists need added detail in that they were spare? cabs only so easy to cab! We also ventured towards Etches Park but were soon hossed by BTP

September 2 1968. I had been out of the country on August 11, but I wouldn’t have been taking part in the ‘celebrations’ anyway. This was the first of a two-day trip round some of the last steam sheds in the northwest to see the remaining engines before they were taken off for scrapping. (And the sheds were a lot quieter than they would have been on the 11th.)

Carnforth:

Fairburn tank - 42073/42085

Stanier 5 - 44709/44735/44758/44781/44809/44871/44877/44897/44915/44963/45025/45095/45134/45200/45206/45209/ 45231/45268/45310/45330/45342/45390/45394/45424/45435/45445

Ivatt 2 mogul - (4)6441

8F - 48124

B1 - 61306

Standard 4 - 75009/75019/75020/75027/75048

9F - 92077/92088/92091/92118/92160/92167/92223

6441 had been repainted in an LMS-style colour scheme. 42085 still had the early BR emblem.
